🌿 Green and yellow marbled foliage • ☀️ Indirect to partial shade light • 💧 Moderate watering • 🌱 Very easy • 🪝 Hanging size available
Native to the tropical forests of Southeast Asia, Epipremnum aureum — commonly called Golden Pothos or Scindapsus — is one of the most widespread and easiest indoor climbing plants to grow worldwide. Its bright green heart-shaped leaves marbled with cream yellow naturally climb the canopy trees, explaining its remarkable tolerance to partial shade and low care needs. It is available in 5 sizes, including a hanging pot version, among our indoor climbing and trailing plants and our easy-care plants.
Which Pothos variety to choose?
The Epipremnum genus includes several varieties with very different foliage — here’s how Golden Pothos compares among them:
- Epipremnum aureum — Golden Pothos (this plant) — bright green heart-shaped leaves marbled with cream yellow, climbing or trailing habit, 5 sizes including a hanging pot. The most classic and generous version.
- Epipremnum 'Marble Queen' — oval leaves variegated cream white and green, trailing habit. The brightest and most contrasting version.
- Epipremnum 'N'Joy' — compact leaves variegated with pure white and dark green in well-defined areas, more compact habit. The most graphic bicolor version.
- Epipremnum 'Happy Leaf' — leaves splashed with irregular yellow on a green background, trailing habit. The most colorful version.
- Epipremnum pinnatum 'Cebu Blue' — silvery blue-green lance-shaped leaves, climbing or trailing habit. The rarest and most original version.
- Scindapsus pictus 'Trebie' — dark green oval leaves speckled with matte silver, trailing habit. The velvety silver version.
Light & placement
- Light: bright indirect light to partial shade — tolerates low light spaces better than most climbing plants, but growth will be faster and variegation more intense with good light.
- Ideal: living room, office, bright bathroom, high shelf, or hanging near an East or West-facing window.
- Temperature: 18 to 27 °C, without sudden changes.
- Soil: light, airy, and well-drained — potting soil for green plants mixed with perlite.
Watering & care
- Watering: moderate — let the top 2 to 3 cm of soil dry out between waterings. Epipremnum aureum is one of the most tolerant plants for missed waterings — mastering watering remains the key to dense and vigorous foliage.
- Frequency: about once a week in spring-summer, reduced in winter.
- Drainage: essential — pot with drainage hole and saucer.
- Humidity: adapts to dry to medium atmosphere — tolerates dry air well.
- Fertilizer: every 2 to 3 weeks in spring-summer, diluted liquid fertilizer.
- Support: stake on a moss pole to encourage climbing growth and larger leaf development, or let it hang freely from a shelf.
Decor ideas & plant pairings
- On a stake: guided on a coconut fiber stake as in the photo, its leaves grow and thicken into a very structured plant column — pair it with a Monstera Deliciosa for a large tropical arrangement.
- Hanging: the Ø15 cm size in a hanging pot is ready to hang upon receipt — its trailing stems create a very generous green and yellow plant curtain, ideal near a window.
- Ideal pot: a natural Selin basket for medium sizes or a Brussels anthracite for large sizes — the natural and dark tones contrast perfectly with the bright green and creamy yellow foliage.
Verdeia tips
- Propagate it for free: cut a stem with at least one node and place it in a glass of water — propagating plants by cuttings is especially easy with this species, which roots in 1 to 2 weeks.
- Rotate the pot every two weeks: Epipremnum turns its leaves toward the light — regular rotation ensures a balanced and even shape, especially for large sizes on a stake.
- Clean its leaves regularly: dust dulls the bright green foliage and reduces photosynthesis — wiping with a damp cloth every 3 to 4 weeks is enough to keep them vibrant.
