Alocasia reginula ‘Black Velvet’

Alocasia reginula ‘Black Velvet’ is a compact, slow-growing Alocasia with thick, matte leaves that can appear almost black once mature. Pale veins stand out sharply against the dark surface. Leaves rise from a short central base, giving the plant a compact, upright shape.

It grows from a small underground corm and builds a tight cluster of leaves around the base. The leaves feel substantial, with a soft, velvety finish that marks easily if handled roughly.

Alocasia reginula was described in 1998 and is linked to Borneo. Later records place the species in shaded forest habitat in Sabah. ‘Black Velvet’ is the best-known cultivated form of the species.

Older plants may flower indoors, with the usual small spathe and spadix.

The species name reginula means “little queen”, matching the plant’s compact size and dark leaves.

Care

  • Bright, indirect light keeps growth compact.
  • Maintain warmth between 18–29 °C.
  • Aim for 60–80% humidity with airflow.
  • Water after the mix dries partway, then drain fully.
  • Use a fine, airy substrate and a snug pot.
  • Feed lightly during active growth.

What to watch

  • A soft base usually points to excess moisture or cold roots.
  • Drooping in a heavy pot usually means the roots are not taking up water well.
  • Brown edges can result from dry air or heat.
  • One older leaf yellowing is normal as new growth appears.

Safe placement

Keep away from pets and children. The plant contains calcium oxalate crystals; cut or damaged tissue can irritate skin, mouth and throat.

Great toy my dog loves!
Color: 12 Tennis Ball
My dachshund, Winston, loves these balls because they squeak and of coarse it’s a ball. Only thing is he is destructive and the squeaker doesn’t last long but by far his favorite toy.

Balls need to squeak out of the box
Color: 12 Tennis Ball
The squeaky ball lights up the faces of my dog shelter furiends, they love to fetch and chew the ball to make it squeaky. I have been buying these balls for about a year now. They don’t last long with some of the dogs, but the joy is worth the price. Lately some of the balls do not squeak right out of the box but many of the balls are fine. Returning the box doesn’t make sense because I used some already so I thought I would comment, dropping one star so far.

Nicer than I expected
Color: 12 Tennis Ball
Much more sturdy than other "squeaky" balls of this type. I love that they have an internal or covered squeaker, so I don't have to worry about my dog chewing it and swallowing a plastic squeaker. But ... what I find as a plus, my dog sees as a minus, since one of his favorite thing is to chew a ball until it stops squeaking. They come in a plastic net bag, which is very handy for storage also.

Squeaks break immediately
Color: 12 Tennis Ball
Squeaks break almost immediately, even with very light chewing. Some are so badly made that the squeaks break after one or two squeezes. Get Kong balls instead.
