Variegated Chinese Dunce Cap, also known as Dunce's Caps, is a petite succulent that has become a popular and rare addition to many gardens. This plant originates from China and is part of the Orostachys Iwarenge var. Boehmeri family. It forms small rosettes with offsets appearing on long stems, creating a clumping effect that can grow up to 15cm in height.

The foliage of the Variegated Chinese Dunce Caps is grey-blue in color with delightful cream to light yellow margins. As the plant grows larger, it produces extreme variegation and when stressed, can take on a lovely pink hue. During the warmer months, this plant grows prolifically, producing many offsets quickly from a single plant. Although delicate in appearance, the Variegated Chinese Dunce Cap is much hardier than it looks and is frost hardy to -10°C, even surviving being buried under snow as it does in its native China.

To thrive, this plant grows best in filtered light and can burn in the summer heatwaves. It benefits from protection and should be placed either in bright shade or under 30% shade cloth. Established plants in the ground are very hardy and only need to be watered in extended periods of dry weather. Pot plants need to be watered more often, although the soil should be dry before watering again.

Variegated Chinese Dunce Caps are fantastic for pots and hanging baskets, and are also a collector's delight. Plant in a bowl on its own and watch it spread. The offsets droop over the edge, offering a nice effect. It can also be grown in shade gardens and is great in a rockery garden. Overall, the Variegated Chinese Dunce Cap is a beautiful and versatile plant that is easy to propagate even from the smallest offsets.
