Meet the Polka Dot Plant
Add a playful splash of color to your home with the Polka Dot Plant (Hypoestes phyllostachya). Its paper-thin leaves are peppered in vibrant pink, white and green—an instant mood-booster for shelves, desks or terrariums.
Plant Profile
- Botanical Name: Hypoestes phyllostachya
- Common Names: Polka Dot Plant, Freckle Face
- Family: Acanthaceae
- Origin: Native to the tropical forests of Madagascar
Care Guide
Light
Bright, indirect light is ideal. Too much direct sun will bleach the spots; in lower light the colors will deepen.
Water
Keep soil evenly moist. Water when the top inch feels dry, and always allow excess to drain to prevent root rot.
Humidity & Temperature
Thrives at 65–80 °F (18–27 °C) and at least 50% humidity. Mist regularly or set on a pebble tray for best color intensity.
Pruning & Feeding
Pinch back leggy stems to encourage bushy growth. Feed monthly with a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer during spring and summer.
What to Expect on Arrival
Your Polka Dot Plant ships in a 4″ nursery pot, healthy and ready to display. Look for vibrant spotting on every leaf and firm, turgid stems—signs of careful selection and packing.
Fun Fact
Those cheerful spots actually help attract pollinators in the wild—nature’s own strategy for survival, now brightening your indoors!
