Description
Portulaca Oleracea Variegata
Portulaca oleracea variegata, commonly known as Variegated Purslane, is an eye-catching and easy-to-grow perennial plant that adds a vibrant touch to any garden or hanging basket. This low-growing, ground-covering plant forms dense carpets of light green leaves adorned with lemon yellow and cream edges, which transform into a remarkable hot pink hue under bright light.
A distinct feature of this plant is the occasional appearance of pure hot pink extreme variegated offsets, contributing to its standout appearance in any setting. Gardeners who are looking for a low-maintenance, colourful plant that flourishes in warm climates should consider adding Portulaca oleracea variegata to their collection.
From mid-summer to autumn, this plant boasts hot pink flowers that contrast beautifully with the variegated leaves, adding a pop of colour to any garden or hanging basket. Although Portulaca oleracea variegata thrives in warm climates, it requires some protection from the cold in cooler regions of Australia. In cold climates, the plant will enter dormancy over winter and should be sheltered from frost and watered sparingly. Gardeners in colder areas may opt to overwinter their plants in a greenhouse or bring them indoors to shield them from the cold.
Reaching a height of 10-20 cm and spreading 30-40 cm wide, this appealing trailing succulent is an excellent choice for spillers in containers, hanging baskets or as ground cover. To achieve the best bloom, plant it in a location with full sun exposure.
Planting Portulaca oleracea variegata is a breeze, as it can adapt to various soil types as long as there is proper drainage. Space the plants 20-25 cm apart and mulch around the base to manage spreading. Water occasionally during dry spells, taking care not to overwater. A light application of compost or slow-release fertiliser at the time of planting can enhance growth and encourage better flower production. Pruning may be necessary to prevent the plant from overtaking your garden, and deadheading spent blooms will promote continuous flowering.
In summary, Portulaca oleracea variegata is a striking and unique plant that can effortlessly enhance your outdoor space with its vivid variegated foliage and bright pink flowers. With minimal care requirements, it's a fantastic choice for those seeking to add colour and interest to their garden or hanging baskets.
