Phoenix's Cleanest Trailing Groundcover for Bright White Color & Low Water

White Trailing Lantana (Lantana montevidensis 'White') is the crisp, elegant cousin of the purple and orange lantana varieties — delivering the same vigorous trailing habit and exceptional drought tolerance but with pure white blooms that brighten borders, slopes, and rock gardens throughout the Phoenix Valley. Its clean white flowers pair beautifully with virtually any landscape color palette, and its nearly year-round bloom season makes it one of the most reliable flowering groundcovers available in Zone 9b–10a. Whether you're creating a refined xeriscape border in Paradise Valley, blanketing a slope in Gilbert, or adding bright contrast to a dark block wall in Glendale, White Trailing Lantana delivers season after season with minimal water and care.

White Trailing Lantana Uses in Phoenix Landscapes

Elegant Slopes & Erosion Control

White Trailing Lantana is one of the most effective slope plants for the Phoenix Valley — its fast-spreading stems root as they go, stabilizing soil and preventing erosion while delivering a clean, bright floral display. The white blooms show up beautifully against dark rock mulch, gravel, or boulder-covered slopes. Plant 3–4 feet apart on grades for full coverage within one growing season.

Wall Cascades & Retaining Wall Softeners

Few plants soften hardscape as elegantly as White Trailing Lantana cascading over a stucco wall or block retaining structure. The long trailing stems spill naturally over edges, creating a graceful waterfall effect of white blooms against rough wall textures. Plant at the top of walls 3 feet apart; trails cascade down naturally, lengthening each season as the plant matures.

Mixed Lantana Color Combinations

White Trailing Lantana shines in combination plantings with purple, orange, and gold lantana varieties. Classic pairings: white + purple for a crisp, refined look; white + Radiation (orange-red) for a fiesta-inspired border; or white + New Gold for a soft, elegant two-tone groundcover. Plant alternating varieties 3 feet apart for a ribbon of color that covers large areas quickly.

Pool-Adjacent Groundcover

White Trailing Lantana's low-litter blooming habit and compact spreading form make it an excellent choice for groundcover around pool decks and water features. The white flowers complement blue water beautifully, and the plant's drought tolerance means it thrives in the reflected heat typical of pool surrounds without constant irrigation. Keep trimmed back from the pool edge for a tidy, polished look.

Best Time to Plant White Trailing Lantana in Phoenix

Fall planting (October–November) is ideal — soil stays warm for root development while air temperatures moderate, giving the plant 6–8 months to establish before its first Phoenix summer. Spring planting (February–April) is an excellent second window. Avoid summer planting in June–August unless you can provide daily watering and some afternoon shade protection for the first 2–3 weeks.

How to Plant White Trailing Lantana

  1. Dig wide, not deep — 2–3x the root ball width, same depth. Trailing lantana spreads horizontally; a wide planting hole helps roots establish quickly.
  2. Check for caliche — break through any hardpan layer with a breaker bar. Lantana roots need excellent drainage; caliche layers that hold water will cause root problems.
  3. Backfill with native soil — a light 20% organic compost blend is fine. Avoid heavy amendment; lantana prefers lean, well-draining conditions.
  4. Spacing — 3–4 ft apart for slopes and groundcover; 3 ft for wall cascade plantings for faster fill-in.
  5. Water basin — build a 3–4 inch ring of soil to direct irrigation to the root zone during establishment.
  6. Mulch — 2–3 inches of gravel or decomposed granite to retain moisture and moderate summer soil temperatures.

Watering White Trailing Lantana in Phoenix

First Year Watering Schedule

  • Weeks 1–2: Every 1–2 days, deep and slow (20–30 min drip)
  • Month 1–2: Every 3–4 days
  • Month 3–6: Every 7–10 days (every 5–7 days in peak summer heat)
  • After Year 1: Every 10–14 days in summer; every 3–4 weeks in winter. Established plants are highly drought-tolerant.

Drip Irrigation

Place drip emitters 18–24 inches from the crown of each plant. Use 1 GPH emitters for 1-gallon plants; 2 GPH for 3/5-gallon plants. Once established (6–8 months), White Trailing Lantana requires minimal supplemental water to maintain bloom and vigor through Phoenix summers.

How fast does White Trailing Lantana spread?
Quickly — established plants spread 3–5 feet per season in Phoenix. A 1-gallon plant in spring will fill a 3–4 foot radius by fall; 3/5-gallon plants establish even faster and cover ground in the first season.

Does it bloom year-round in Phoenix?
Nearly — White Trailing Lantana blooms spring through fall and can continue into winter in the warmest Phoenix microclimates. It may pause or slow down during the absolute coldest weeks (December–January) but resumes strongly as temperatures rise in February–March.

Does it come back after a freeze?
In Zone 9b–10a (Phoenix Metro), it typically holds most of its foliage through winter. In unusual hard freezes it may die back to the crown but re-sprouts vigorously in spring. Cut back frost-damaged stems to 4–6 inches in late February.

How do I keep it looking tidy?
Shear White Trailing Lantana back by one-third in late winter (February) and again in mid-summer (July) to encourage fresh growth and dense re-flowering. Without trimming, it can become a bit woody in the center over time.

Is it safe near pools?
Yes — White Trailing Lantana produces minimal debris and the blooms don't create messy litter near pool water. Its low spreading form is easy to keep trimmed at the pool edge for a neat appearance.

  • Dallas Red Lantana — Bold red and orange shrub lantana for added height behind white trailing varieties
  • Moss Verbena — Fine-textured purple groundcover that creates stunning contrast with white lantana

How Many White Trailing Lantana Do I Need?

Each plant trails out to 4 to 6 feet wide, so a little goes a long way as a groundcover or slope filler. At 3 to 4 foot spacing the plants knit together within one growing season. Use the coverage table to estimate counts:

Area to Cover At 3 ft spacing At 4 ft spacing
100 sq ft 11 plants 6 plants
200 sq ft 22 plants 12 plants
300 sq ft 33 plants 19 plants

For wall-top cascades, plant a single row 3 feet apart and let the stems spill over the edge.

White Trailing Lantana Season-by-Season in Phoenix

  • Spring (Feb–Apr): Bloom ramps back up fast as nights warm, and stems push new spreading growth. A prime second planting window.
  • Summer (May–Sep): Peak performance. Loves reflected heat off walls and pavement and blooms straight through the hottest months, flushing harder with monsoon rain.
  • Fall (Oct–Nov): The best planting season in Phoenix, with bloom continuing well into the season.
  • Winter (Dec–Jan): Semi-evergreen and holds most foliage in the warmest spots. A hard freeze can knock it back to the crown; cut frost-burned stems to 4 to 6 inches in late February and it re-sprouts vigorously.

Plant It With

Is White Trailing Lantana Right for Your Yard?

It thrives in full sun with 6 or more hours of light, in well-draining soil where caliche has been broken through, and on slopes, wall tops, and open beds where it has room to trail 4 to 6 feet. It shrugs off reflected heat and needs very little water once established. Not the right fit if you have pets that graze on plants, since lantana foliage and berries are toxic if eaten, or if you want a tidy plant that never needs shearing.

Better Than Expected
Color: Black, Size: L40 Ultra Gen 2
Been using the Dreame L40 Ultra Gen 2 for a few days now and honestly it’s better than I expected. The suction power is strong, especially for dust, hair, and small debris. The mopping performance is also surprisingly good compared to older robot vacuums. What I like most is the automation — auto-emptying, auto mop washing, and auto drying make daily cleaning much easier.Navigation is smart and smooth, and it rarely bumps into things. The only downside is the dirty water tank needs regular cleaning, and thick carpets still clean better with a traditional vacuum.Overall, it’s a great upgrade for busy people who want to keep their home clean without spending too much time on it.

The experience has been excellent
Color: Black, Size: L40 Ultra Gen 2
Just received the Dreame L40 Ultra GEN2 and my first impression is very positive! The packaging feels premium, and the setup process was quick and easy through the app. The first mapping run was surprisingly fast, and the navigation was smart without randomly bumping into things. The cleaning performance exceeded my expectations. It picked up dust and hair very well on the first run, and the mopping feature left the floors looking noticeably cleaner. The noise level is also lower than I expected, which is a nice bonus. So far, I’m really happy with my first experience using it. It already feels like it’s going to save me a lot of time on cleaning, and I’m excited to keep using it!

Excellent robot, object avoidance needs work
Color: Black, Size: L40 Ultra Gen 2
We really enjoy this. It does a fantastic job. Pretty excellent object avoidance. Does not mop our rugs. It DOES NOT do a good job of avoiding cat poop, however. We had an incident where it mopped out floor with cat poop. Took us awhile to clean it out of the robot, get our floors clean, and get the smell out of our house. Other than that incident, we are very, very happy with it.

Smart, powerful, and genuinely makes daily life easier
Color: Black, Size: L40 Ultra Gen 2
I bought this robot vacuum recently and have been using it for several days now. So far, I’m really impressed. It is smart, powerful, and very convenient for daily cleaning. The biggest highlight for me is how well it avoids obstacles. It can recognize and move around things in the house automatically, so I don’t have to constantly watch it or move everything out of the way before starting a cleaning session. That makes it feel much more worry-free compared with other cleaning tools. The suction power is also very strong. For everyday floor cleaning, I honestly feel like it does an excellent job, even compared with my Dyson handheld vacuum. It picks up dust and debris well, and the cleaning result has been very satisfying. Another feature I really appreciate is the scheduling. I can set it to clean automatically every day, and it just takes care of the floors by itself. This has saved a lot of time and effort for both me and my wife. After using it, I feel like a good robot vacuum is almost as important as a dishwasher. It reduces a lot of daily housework and gives us more time to focus on work, hobbies, entertainment, and family life. It has quickly become a useful companion in our home. I have only used it for several days, so I can’t speak to long-term durability yet, but my first impression is very positive. If you are looking for a smart, powerful, and hands-free cleaning helper, I would definitely recommend this robot vacuum.

Very thorough and efficient cleaning
Color: Black, Size: L40 Ultra Gen 2
I've been using Roomba vacuums and mops for about fifteen years now, and truly loved them. My Braava mop recently wasn't working well, so I started researching again for the best robot mop. Anytime I've done that before, it was always a Roomba product that seemed to be rated best, but this time it was this Dreame dual vacuum and mop - I hadn't even heard of Dreame. Based on reviews and price, I decided to go for it. I am LOVING this machine! It cleans significantly more thoroughly AND faster than any Roomba I've had. My main floor is probably around 1500sq. ft. My previous Roomba took about 6 hours cleaning it. The Dreame takes just over 2 hours, and results in a noticeably cleaner floor. I have a lady that comes and cleans part of my house once a month, and she thought I must have done an extra intensive clean of my floors for an event. I hadn't told her anything about the new machine, but she noticed a significant difference in the cleanliness of my floors. It's great with picking up dog hair that is everywhere in my house. It has a strong suction for rugs - the door mats used to still have dust that I could shake out after Roomba went over them, not anymore. And I used to have to get down and scrub the area around my dog's food and water dishes because Roomba couldn't mop up that mess. I haven't had to do that in the two months or so since I've had Dreame. I thought it was really strange that it didn't come with the container for the cleaning solution, but thought I'd try it for awhile just with water. So far, I haven't found a reason to pay extra for that container or the solution! Water alone is doing a thorough job! The timer feature works very well, and I appreciate that it sends me a text notice when a particular part needs cleaning or adjustment or whatever. And it includes a link to show where that part is and what to actually do. The communication of the maintenance of the machine has been very good so far. I used to have Roomba run daily, but I have Dreame just running three days a week, and I have cleaner floors! It DOES talk loudly, such as, "Cleaning mop pads." But you can time it to run when the talking won't bother you. Overall, it's a good bit quieter than my Roomba. It gets louder when it's vacuuming rugs, but most of my floor is hard wood or tile, so it's mainly relatively quiet. The two aspects that were better with Roomba were that Roomba fit under my couches to clean (this is too tall), and it was significantly easier to clean hair out of the omnidirectional wheel and brushes of Roomba. I paid $550 for this, and it has been WELL worth the money!
