Ford Series 309 Rear Mounted Drill Planter Operator's Manual

This is the Operator's Manual for the Ford Series 309 Rear Mounted Drill Planter, covering two-row, four-row, and six-row configurations, seed hopper types, seed plate selection, seeding rates, attachments, and seasonal maintenance across 32 pages. This is the original factory document Ford issued to 309 owners and is available as an instant digital download.

About the Ford 309 Planter

The Ford Series 309 was a rear-mounted drill planter designed for 3-point hitch attachment on Ford utility tractors, produced as part of Ford's implement lineup during the 1960s and 1970s. The 309's modular design allowed it to be configured in 2-row, 4-row, or 6-row setups by adding planter units to the toolbar frame — making it adaptable to a range of farm sizes and tractor horsepower without requiring a different base machine. It used a cell-type seed metering mechanism with interchangeable seed plates sized for corn, cotton, peanuts, and other row crops, and the manual includes factory seed charts covering seeding rates across multiple crops. The 309 could be fitted with fertilizer attachments, disc and shovel coverers, marker systems, and a hydraulic cylinder booster kit for operators needing additional downforce on the 3-point linkage in harder soils. Ford's 309, 310, and 320 planters shared design philosophy and many attachment types, though they differed in mounting configuration and frame design. The 309's 3-point rear mounting made it well-suited to smaller acreage operations where the simplicity of a tractor-integrated lift system was preferred over a pull-type frame.

What This Manual Covers

This 32-page manual covers all three row configurations and the complete attachment lineup from initial tractor hookup through field operation, assembly, and seasonal storage. Key sections include:

  • Operation — attaching the planter to the tractor; row spacing and planter setup; seed hoppers for corn, cotton, and peanuts; seed plate selection and seeding rate adjustment; seed charts for multiple crops; lubrication; seasonal storage; troubleshooting common planting issues
  • Assembly Procedures — two-row planter assembly; four-row planter assembly; six-row planter assembly
  • Attachments — fertilizer attachments; disc and shovel coverers; disc and hook marker systems; gauge shoes and press wheels; peanut hopper attachment; hydraulic cylinder booster kit; bed sweep and wheel scraper attachments

Why This Manual Matters

  • All three row configurations in one document: The 2-row, 4-row, and 6-row assembly procedures are each documented separately — critical when adding rows to an existing frame or assembling a planter that was disassembled and stored without documentation
  • Seed plate and crop chart reference: Matching the correct seed plate to corn, cotton, peanut, or other crops and setting the correct seeding rate requires the factory charts included in this manual — the reference source operators need when changing crops or switching seed varieties between seasons
  • Peanut and cotton hopper documentation: The specialty crop hopper attachments — peanut and cotton configurations — are documented here, covering crops that generic corn planter resources don't address
  • Hydraulic cylinder booster kit: The optional hydraulic booster for 3-point downforce is documented with installation and operating procedures — important for operators running the 309 in heavier or more compacted soils where standard linkage downforce is insufficient
  • Troubleshooting guide: Common planting problems — skips, doubles, uneven spacing, and poor seed furrow closure — are documented with their probable causes, giving operators a diagnostic reference during planting season
  • Original factory content: This is the manual Ford issued to 309 owners, carrying manual code SE 6941-E

Manual Code: SE 6941-E

Not worth your time!
Format: Paperback
The abstration level of the knowledge presented in this book is mixed and poorly organized, for example, it could leap from high level suddenly into the details of import packages and codes. This book tries to cover a loooot but achieves so little in any specific topic. Sometimes the high level logic is not even consistent, sometimes the low level details contain errors. There are nonsensical sentences, poorly formatted equations, figures should be printed in color to understand but are in black and white. While I may doubt myself of not being able to delve in at the beginning, gradually it is pretty clear that it is the poor quality of this book that drags me and makes me want to finish reading as soon as possible. I cannot believe this quality of writing was generated with the help of AI. This is an evidence that human can write much poorly than AI. All the figures from the cited papers are of poor resolution and quality. I have submitted more than 15 erratas to the publisher. These just cover the obvious mistakes or errors, and cannot cover the poor organization and logic of the book. It's such a waste of my money and time!
