The Alocasia 'Calidora', also known as Elephant Ear 'Calidora', is a herbaceous perennial hybrid from the Araceae family. This tropical plant is prized for its massive, attractive, and very tropical-looking leaves. It brings a spectacular touch and majestic allure to any interior or garden during the warm season.

Key Features

  • Foliage: Very large, glossy, bright green leaves, arrow-shaped and strongly ribbed.
  • Habit: Upright and erect, with clusters of long stems, forming a very attractive and imposing vase-shaped silhouette.
  • Growth: Moderate.
  • Care: Moderate to high. Requires specific light, water, and temperature conditions to thrive.
  • Appeal: Primarily cultivated for the impressive size and very tropical appearance of its foliage, which makes it a striking focal point.

Care Tips

  • Light: Prefers bright indirect light or dappled/partial sunlight. Avoid intense afternoon direct sun that can scorch the leaves. Indoors, place it near a bright window but protected from direct rays.
  • Watering: Water regularly to keep the soil moist but well-drained. The soil should never be waterlogged to prevent root rot. Reduce watering in winter.
  • Soil: Plant in a well-aerated and well-drained potting mix, rich in organic matter, that retains some moisture. An Aroid mix (such as equal parts coco coir, perlite, and orchid bark) is ideal.
  • Humidity: Thrives in high humidity conditions, with humidity above 50%, ideally over 60%. A humidifier or grouping with other plants can help.
  • Temperature: Prefers warm temperatures, ideally between 18°C and 29°C (65°F to 85°F). It is sensitive to cold and should never be exposed to temperatures below 10°C (50°F). Avoid cold drafts and sudden temperature changes.
  • Fertilization: Fertilize every 1 to 2 months in spring and summer with a balanced fertilizer. Reduce fertilization and watering in winter.
  • Pruning: Pruning is not strictly necessary, but old or damaged leaves can be removed to maintain aesthetics and redirect the plant's energy.
  • Propagation: Primarily by division of offsets.
  • Repotting: Repot every 2 to 3 years, or when the plant is root-bound, in spring. Choose a slightly larger pot with good drainage holes.

Caution: Alocasia 'Calidora' is considered toxic (moderate toxicity) to humans and pets if ingested. All parts of the plant (flowers, fruits, leaves, roots, sap/juice, stems, seeds) contain calcium oxalate crystals that can cause painful irritation of the lips, mouth, tongue, and throat after chewing; difficulty speaking; nausea and diarrhea, vomiting, delirium, and death. Contact with the sap can also cause dermatitis. Handle with extreme caution and keep out of reach of children and animals.

Good quality bags
I'm far from a professional coffee roaster, but I do enjoy it. I used to use just little plastic bags when giving coffee to friends and family, but these work so much better! They are quite thick and just feel like they're quality. I do not have a mylar sealer, but I did figure out that a vacuum heat sealer will work. Just gotta run the heat part a couple times. Probably not as good as a real mylar sealer, but it works. Again, I'm not professional. I like that, being black bags, they include a roll of labels. Hard to write on black, so this was a nice addition. Overall, these are great bags.

The valve allows for the release of carbon dioxide gas while preventing oxygen from entering the bag
Note that you will need a heat sealer to seal these bags. The high-barrier aluminum foil construction of these bags provides excellent protection against moisture, oxygen, and light, which are the primary factors that can degrade the quality and freshness of coffee beans. The side zipper design and heat sealable feature ensure a tight seal, effectively preventing any air from entering or escaping the bag. The inclusion of a valve allows for the release of carbon dioxide gas while preventing oxygen from entering the bag, further preserving the flavor and aroma of the coffee beans. These bags are really great for storing coffee.

Nice design, easy to pour, smooth coffee.
This is a really great design. We've been using this since July of 2024 and it's come in really handy for daily coffee making. Much smoother than a drip machine, and less coffee is needed. This starts the journey coffee making artisans.

Just the perfect size!
Love the size of the carafe. Smaller than expected but that was what I was hoping for. A good 2½ to 3 cups full. Looks modern and Chic and blends in with all the other stainless steel appliances in my kitchen.

It's nice, but the glass is super thin
Everything about this is built really well, except the glass. I'll get into the glass at the end of this, so stick with me. The stand is real heavy and overbuilt if you ask me, but that makes it super stable. The rubber mat on the bottom is a nice touch. The rubber that holds the metal cone on the stand keeps it stable too. The cone works great with #4 coffee filters (I've got a mess of them). They're a bit big but they still fit. I actually use it a lot of times without the stand because I weigh my water as I add it. The cone fits nicely right in the top of the glass. The glass though. It's SUPER thin. I've had a Chemex knock-off that was slightly thicker than this break just from setting it on the counter wrong. I'm just waiting for this thing to shatter on me for no reason. This would be a great unit if that glass wasn't so thin.
