Dracaena reflexa 'Anita' – Compact Reflexa with Fresh Green Leaves

Dracaena reflexa 'Anita' is a cultivar of Dracaena reflexa Lam., grown worldwide as a reliable ornamental and houseplant. Unlike the narrow-leaved marginata types, 'Anita' features lush clusters of slender, arching leaves in a fresh, vibrant green. These evergreen rosettes emerge from thick, often irregular stems, creating a natural, bushy silhouette that brings instant tropical character to interiors. Its compact habit and graceful leaf texture make it particularly versatile for both homes and offices.

Why Dracaena 'Anita' Is Distinct

  • Leaf Form: Slender but broader than marginata types, in a uniform, bright green.
  • Growth Habit: Bushy, compact crowns on thick, sometimes twisted stems.
  • Size: Typically 60 – 120 cm indoors, taller in greenhouse or outdoor subtropical settings.
  • Ornamental Value: Dense, elegant foliage gives a fuller appearance than most Dracaena cultivars.

Origin and Background

Dracaena reflexa is native to Madagascar and nearby islands, where it grows as a small tree. The cultivar 'Anita' was selected in cultivation for its compact size and lush green leaves, making it more suitable for smaller spaces while still retaining the distinctive thick stems of the species.

Cultivation Guide

  • Light: Thrives in bright, indirect light but also adapts to medium-light rooms.
  • Watering: Keep the soil evenly moist, but let the upper layer dry slightly between waterings.
  • Soil: Use a well-draining potting mix with organic content.
  • Temperature: Maintain between 18 – 27 °C; protect from drafts and cold air.
  • Humidity: Adapts to average indoor humidity, but appreciates occasional misting.
  • Feeding: Fertilize monthly in spring and summer with a balanced liquid feed.

Things to Watch Out For

  • Leaf Yellowing: Often due to overwatering or poor drainage.
  • Leggy Growth: Caused by insufficient light; place in a brighter location.
  • Pests: Can occasionally attract spider mites or scale insects.
  • Toxicity: Contains saponins, toxic to pets if ingested.

Why Collectors Choose Dracaena 'Anita'

Dracaena 'Anita' offers a softer, greener alternative to the bold red-edged marginata cultivars. Its compact, bushy shape and graceful arching leaves make it particularly suited for modern interiors where a lush but manageable houseplant is desired. Easy-going and adaptable, it works equally well as a floor specimen or tabletop accent.

Etymology

The genus name Dracaena comes from the Ancient Greek δράκαινα (drakaina), meaning “female dragon,” a reference to the red resin known as “dragon’s blood” produced by some members of the genus.

STELLAR
Format: Hardcover
Highest quality print. I ordered this book during the early part of the 2020 pandemic. When it arrived I was so happy. The images were comforting during a time of great stress in our world. It reminded me that Final Fantasy has been a tremendous part of my life. I'm grateful for the effort put into this book, which was in part a preview of the Pixel Remasters that came later. Brilliant.

Amazing book, but unnecessary
Format: Hardcover, Format: Hardcover
I would give this book 5 stars, but at the end of the day I don't think I can. I love flipping through it and looking at the color palettes and seeing the ways the artists communicated ideas through their limited palettes and spaces. There are also little 3D paper arts you can do of some of the sprites, like the fountain pictured above. It has helped me in my pixel art journey and it could 100% help you. The only reason I would say not to buy it is because all of the sprites are accessible online. If you want to understand the art on a deeper level and develop an appreciation for the passion that pixel art contains, buy it. If you want to look at them quickly as references and are an experienced pixel artist, it is not as useful, you could learn the rules just by looking at the sprites online, but you would miss the explanations and writings that help explain the art.

Great for my Quilting!
Format: Hardcover, Format: Hardcover
I bought this book at launch and it has pretty much become my “bible” for Final Fantasy pixel art. I sew and love making nerdy quilts so when I saw this, it was a total insta-buy. It showcases so much original art as well as newly designed sprites (for both older and newer games). I honestly didn’t know about the newer games being designed as sprites so when I saw this, I immediately got to creating. Beyond this being a great pattern book for pixel quilting, I loved seeing a piece of FF history we don’t get to know about. Also loved the interview showcased. A good book for any Final Fantasy lover collection!

A great book for a fan of the early final fantasy series.
Format: Hardcover
I love this book! I grew up with the NES and this brought back a lot of memories of how as a kid I would get lost in the creativity of what developers of these games made with only some blocks. I love pixel art and this book is great if you enjoy making your own and admiring the work of someone else's and seeing their imagination from some truly great games. This book is small in size but is perfect size to show blown up images of final fantasy pixel characters and creatures, also of places from the games. Also having final fantasy characters from beyond the Nintendo/SNES was a really cool surprise to see if they had been made in that era.
