Texas Sage Cold Hardy and Drought Resistant Border Flowering Hedge

Texas sage, Leucophyllum frutescens, is a beautiful, drought-resistant shrub that is native to the southwestern United States and northern Mexico. Also known as Texas rain Sage, Cenizo, Barometer Bush, Silverleaf, Purple Sage, Texas Ranger, ash-bush, wild lilac, senisa, cenicilla, palo cenizo, or hierba del cenizo.

This hardy plant is known for its silvery-gray-aqua blue foliage and stunning purple or pink flowers that bloom from summer through fall. It is an excellent choice for those looking to add some color and texture to their landscape while conserving water.

The Texas sage requires full sun exposure and well-draining soil to thrive. It is relatively low maintenance and only needs occasional watering once established. Pruning can help keep the plant's shape and promote new growth.

Texas Sage, scientifically known as Leucophyllum frutescens, is a popular and versatile shrub native to the arid regions of Texas and the Southwest United States. Texas sage is a popular ornamental plant, commonly shaped into hedges and blooms over the entire surface. Plant Texas sage in full sun, this shrub loves the heat! Texas sage is also very tolerant of cooler temperatures, down to 10° F. This plant prefers soils with good drainage. Texas sage is susceptible to chlorosis and root rot when grown in heavy or poorly draining soil. Once established Water Texas sage every other week in the summer, and once a month in winter.

Texas Sage Overview

Appearance: Texas Sage is a dense, evergreen shrub known for its silvery-gray foliage and prolific blooming cycles. The plant produces tubular, purple, pink, or white flowers after rainfall or in response to humidity changes, adding a burst of color to the landscape.

Growth Habit: This shrub typically grows compactly, ranging from 3 to 8 feet in height and width, depending on the variety. Its rounded form and dense foliage make it a popular choice for hedges, borders, or standalone plantings in gardens and landscapes.

Drought Tolerance: Texas Sage is well-adapted to hot and dry conditions, making it a perfect choice for xeriscaping and water-wise gardens. The plant's ability to thrive in low-water environments with minimal maintenance requirements makes it a resilient and sustainable landscaping option.

Blooming Season: Texas Sage is known for its impressive blooming season, which occurs sporadically throughout the year but is particularly abundant after periods of rain or high humidity. The vibrant flowers attract pollinators like bees and butterflies, enhancing biodiversity in the garden.

Landscaping Uses: Texas Sage is commonly used in landscaping for its hardiness, drought tolerance, and ornamental value. It can be planted as a hedge, specimen plant, accent shrub, or mass planting to create visual interest and provide texture in garden beds.

Pruning and Maintenance: Regular pruning after flowering can help maintain the shape and promote new growth in Texas Sage. While the plant is relatively low-maintenance, occasional trimming can enhance its appearance and encourage healthy development.

Dog loves it
Size: 10.5 inch Rubber Flex Tread
I would buy this again and again. It’s extremely durable and has held up great with my 9 month old Saint Bernard puppy. We even call it his “pacifier” because every night he grabs it and chews on it until he falls asleep. Definitely a favorite in our house!

Tough toy, but the yellow tire broke at the seam
Size: 10.5 inch Rubber Flex Tread
It was fun while it lasted and it got a lot of use, but it finally gave out after 6+/- months? Great tug toy. My dog is a 70# mutt with a strong bite and he's chewed through pretty much every other toy he's ever had. This one lasted longer than any of the others by quite a bit. He did zero chew damage to the tires, but the yellow tire in the middle broke at the seam. No tear, the seam just came undone at 90 degree angles. I'm going to look for something else this time but this wasn't bad considering how long it lasted and it wasn't very expensive. If I don't find anything tougher, I may purchase another one of these down the road.

Great chew toy
Size: 10.5 inch Rubber Flex Tread
This is my second time buying the Tonka rings. My dog loves this chew toy. It does take him a bit to destroy them. I give this toy to him as a reward otherwise it be destroyed in 3 days. I have a pitty. So other dogs it should last longer. They are shin whackers and hurt when they connect. So I make sure to watch the dog and toy around small kids and elderly to be safe. They are heavy and made well.

Finally a toy we can leave out!
Size: 10.5 inch Rubber Flex Tread, Size: 10.5 inch Rubber Flex Tread
There are very few toys that we can leave out for our 11 month old golden. Which is a shame because as a small puppy, we taught him to bring us a toy to initiate play instead of nipping. Ropes or stuffies never lasted more than a few minutes so they always had to be taken away. One time he brought us a benenbone to play tug. So I tried this as a last resort. Finally something we can keep out for him! It’s not completely indestructible. He has figured out how to pull bits of tread off. But he chewed hard on it for a solid 20 minutes and it’s still intact with the exception of a few small tread pieces. Can’t say that for 99% of the other dog toys on the market! UPDATE: OK, so it's definitely not indestructible. After a few days of dedicated gnawing, he has almost chewed through the yellow ring so we can't leave him too unsupervised with it. I'm still going to leave it as 5 stars since it's the best tug toy that I have found so far and we have tried a lot! I may buy another one and just make sure I don't let him freely chew on it for any length of time.
