Old Man's Bones Stonecrop (Sedum globosum 'Old Man's Bones')

Old Man's Bones Stonecrop is a compact, waterwise groundcover that brings unique texture to sunny spaces with very little upkeep. Its chubby, bead-like foliage forms a dense mat that fills gaps, softens edges, and keeps beds looking finished through heat and dry weather. In summer, bright yellow flowers add a clean pop of color and attract pollinators. With sharp drainage, it is an easy choice for rock gardens, stonework, and containers where you want dependable coverage.

Distinctive Features

This low, spreading stonecrop is known for rounded, succulent leaves packed tightly along short stems, creating a distinctive, sculptural look. Foliage is generally green with a bronze cast, and it can deepen into red to purple tones with strong sun and seasonal cooling. Clusters of small, star-shaped yellow flowers bloom in summer just above the foliage, adding a bright seasonal accent. In mild winter regions it can hold foliage longer, extending texture beyond the main growing season.

Growing Conditions

  • Sun: Full sun for the best density, color, and flowering.
  • Soil: Sharply well-drained soil is essential, especially sandy, gravelly, or rocky sites.
  • Water: Water to establish, then allow soil to dry between waterings, because consistently wet soil can cause rot.
  • USDA Zones: Hardy in USDA Zones 3 to 9 in typical garden conditions.
  • Mature Size: Typically grows 2 to 4 inches tall and spreads 8 to 12 inches wide.

Ideal Uses

  • Focal Point: Use a broad patch as a low focal point where the bead-like texture can stand out against stone or gravel.
  • Rock Gardens: Tuck into rock and gravel gardens where sharp drainage and reflected heat are common.
  • Between Stones: Plant in crevices, along walls, or in tight spaces where it can knit together into tidy coverage.
  • Edging: Line paths and bed fronts for a clean, low border with distinctive texture.
  • Containers: Use in troughs and pots to add tight, sculptural foliage and a bright summer bloom accent.

Low Maintenance Care

  • Pruning: Trim lightly after flowering or in early spring to refresh growth and keep the mat dense.
  • Fertilizing: Avoid heavy feeding, because lean soils help maintain compact growth and stronger color.
  • Watering: Once established, water only during extended drought, and avoid frequent shallow irrigation.
  • Drainage: Improve heavy soils with grit or plant in raised areas to keep crowns from staying wet.
  • Propagation: Expand plantings easily by re-rooting small stem pieces in well-drained soil.

Why Choose Old Man's Bones Stonecrop?

  • One-of-a-Kind Texture: Rounded, bead-like foliage creates a look that stands apart from typical groundcovers.
  • Summer Color: Yellow, star-shaped flowers add a bright seasonal highlight and support pollinators.
  • Waterwise Coverage: Spreading habit fills gaps and performs well with reduced watering once established.
  • Tough Site Fit: Thrives in rocky, lean, fast-draining soils where many plants struggle.
  • Lower Browsing Pressure: Foliage is often less appealing to rabbits and deer than many soft-leaved groundcovers.

Old Man's Bones Stonecrop is an easy way to add durable coverage and sculptural texture to sunny, fast-draining areas. Pair it with gravel, boulders, and other drought-tolerant plants to create a clean, low-maintenance look that holds up in tough conditions. With sun and drainage, it stays compact, resilient, and visually strong year after year.

Ok
Style: Modern
Works ok. You have to turn the dial to get the treats to come out. Too big and too much comes out quickly so not very challenging to my pup. Too small and the treats won’t come out at all.

Finally slowed my dog down
Style: Modern
This toy is 100% worth the price. My dog is a mini Aussie and this had him engaged for 20 minutes trying to get his food. It looks adorable with the added detail of the dogs. The size is a bit smaller since it is not able to fit his full cup of food in it. The quality is amazing and he didn't immediately break it. It's very easy to use and adjust the size of the holes to make it harder. Love the engagement it provided to my pup.

Kept dog entertained! 🐾
Style: Modern
Love this toy! Glad it kept my dog busy and he really has to work for the treats inside. It rolls well and is fairly light weight. My only complaints is that if you have a strong/heavy chewer be mindful that it will rip through the plastic eventually so your dog could ingest it. For reference I have a maltipoo. 😂

My Puppy Loves this Indestructible Dragon
Size: Large, Color: Pink, Size: Large, Color: Pink
My puppy (8 month old black lab mix) loves, loves, loves her dragon. She has had it for 2 months now. It is one of her favorites and gets daily rough play time. It's her go-to toy for fetch and tug games, as well as just general mouthy play. The squeaker gave out after about 4 weeks, but she would binge squeak for prolonged periods (kind of like chomping on gum) so it was almost a blessing when it went silent. She still chomps on it, but at least now I don't have to hear it. Other than the fact that it's a little grungy and bedraggled from so much loving, it is still in amazing shape. The seams and fur are all still intact. There are no visible holes, rips, or weak spots. I love Chew Guard Technology. This dragon replaced her goDog Iguana (from PetSmart) that developed a tear in the fur after about 4 months of heavy use. (It was superficial, just the outer fur layer and not the innards, but we disposed of it before she could eat more fur.) She can be pretty rough on her toys and I can never predict if any given toy will last minutes or months. The goDog stuffies definitely fall into the "months" category, even with rough daily use. Edit: The dragon lasted about 6 months of intensive, hard play before it developed a small tear in the fur. I patched it a couple times, but once my pup discovers a weak spot, it's the kiss of death for any stuffed item. We had to dispose of the dragon (so sad) to keep her from eating any more of the fur. We replaced the dragon with the goDog Chameleon, which is still going strong. I think we will go back to the dragon for our next toy because it's just so darned cute. We gave the dragon to my niece for her golden retriever puppy who is very chew-happy. That dragon is also doing well. You've just gotta love that chew-guard technology. This is one tough toy.
