Origins and History

Cucurbita pepo, one of the most diverse and ancient species in the squash and pumpkin family, has its origins in the Americas. Archaeological evidence traces its domestication back more than 8,000 years to Mesoamerica—particularly regions of present-day Mexico—and parts of the eastern United States. Early Indigenous peoples cultivated wild gourds not only for food but also for their hard shells, which were used as containers, utensils, and even musical instruments. Over centuries of selection and migration, C. pepo diversified into an astonishing array of forms, including pumpkins, zucchinis, scallop squashes (pattypans), crooknecks, and acorn squashes. Each lineage reflects regional adaptations and culinary traditions. European explorers introduced the species to Europe in the 16th century, where it rapidly gained popularity due to its versatility and ease of cultivation. Today, Cucurbita pepo is grown worldwide, symbolizing both agricultural innovation and cultural exchange between the Old and New Worlds.

Big Max Pumpkin is a giant variety of Cucurbita maxima developed in the mid-20th century, likely bred from earlier large-fruited squashes and pumpkins prized for their size. While not the world-record pumpkin, Big Max quickly gained popularity among growers for fairs, competitions, and community harvest events. It became a staple in the tradition of growing “giant pumpkins” in North America, symbolizing abundance and fall festivities. Because of its consistent performance and impressive size, it has become a classic heirloom type for gardeners who enjoy both spectacle and utility.

Appearance and Characteristics

True to its name, Big Max produces enormous fruits that typically weigh between 50 and 100 pounds, though under ideal conditions they can surpass 150 pounds. The pumpkins are round to slightly flattened, with smooth, thick orange skin and light ribbing. Inside, the flesh is deep yellow-orange, dense, and fairly mild in flavor. Each fruit can reach 18 to 24 inches across, with a thick rind that allows for good storage. The plants are vigorous, sprawling vines that require substantial space to grow to their full potential.

Culinary Uses

While Big Max is not primarily grown for gourmet flavor, it is very useful in the kitchen. The flesh is suitable for pies, soups, stews, and purees, particularly when harvested young or medium-sized. It is also excellent for roasting or for use in canning and freezing. The seeds are edible when roasted, adding to the plant’s usefulness. More commonly, its large fruits are carved for fall decorations, jack-o-lanterns, or centerpieces at festivals and markets.

Growing Tips

Big Max thrives in warm climates and requires a long growing season of about 110–120 days. It is best suited for USDA Zones 3–9, though in cooler regions, seeds should be started indoors and transplanted after frost danger has passed. Sow seeds 1 inch deep, with 3–4 seeds per hill, thinning to the strongest plant. Space hills 4–6 feet apart in rows at least 10 feet apart, as the vines spread extensively. Full sun, rich well-drained soil, and consistent watering are essential. Mulching helps retain moisture and suppress weeds. For competitive sizes, limit the plant to one or two fruits, and provide support beneath them as they mature.

Harvesting Guidance

Big Max pumpkins are ready for harvest when the rind has turned a rich, uniform orange and is hard enough to resist puncture with a fingernail. The vines will begin to dry at maturity. Cut the fruit with several inches of stem attached to promote longer storage. Handle carefully, as the sheer weight of the fruit makes bruising possible. When cured in a warm, dry location for about 10 days, Big Max pumpkins can store for up to 3 months, making them a durable and versatile variety for both display and use in cooking.

Great buy, especially in its price range and perhaps even beyond
Color: A-Silver
Hope not to jinx it and have to change this review in six months but I'm extremely pleased with this machine. I've gone through two DeLonghis that lasted me each 4-5 years and I've liked them a lot, but both have eventually leaked and had quirks that were never ever answered/remedied by their customer service. I bought this Casabrews on spec, after looking through all sorts of alternatives, even hand models. I read through customer reviews, including the negative ones complaining about noise, its weight (or, rather lack of), claims over shoddy materials (its plastic components), alleged issues with its wand and basket, the quality of its shots, and so on. I was concerned about buying a product from a relatively new company with a short track record. But, OTOH, there were some very positive, persuasive reviews online. I'm from a coffee-producing nation and have more of it in my veins than blood so it's an absolute daily must-have that an increasingly leaking DeLonghi wasn't going to provide for long so I was facing an emergency. That this model was on sale at Amazon was a welcome incentive since, by the same token that I know what I like in coffee and scoff at the pretentious, opinionated coffee snobishness that too often characterizes conversations over it in the US, I've never been persuaded by the fancy-schmancy high-end, pocket-gouging machines on the market. While I've only had it for several weeks, I'm delighted with it. It's way faster than my old DeLonghis. I love that I don't have to hover over it watching to make sure it doesn't overflow because it turns itself off--and while I'm perfectly happy with the amount I'm getting without tinkering with it, it's programmable for longer shots. It's relatively quieter--noise complaints are likely from new users of espresso machines unused to their noise. It is lighter than my old machines, but the good news is that the basket fit loosens with use and a light hand on top of it solves the issue. The quibble about the basket falling from the wand seems to be more, again, about unobservant users who don't notice their design and the notch that locks the basket in place. It's also a preferable design than the wire in the DeLonghis, which would get loose and end up in our countertop compost bin when shaking out the puck. I even prefer the wetter pucks of used coffee it produces because they're way easier to scoop out of the basket than the DeLonghi's rock hard ones (even bent one of my demitasse spoons once). And, most importantly, the coffee is ABSOLUTELY FINE, even preferable to what I'd been getting from my old machines. And, hey, if it happens to have a short life, I'll just return and revise my rating and review.

Buono...squisito!
Color: Sterling Silver, Color: Sterling Silver
Arrive and packaged very well. It is lightweight...unsure if it's metal or plastic finished to look like metal...my guess is that "parts" are the latter because the knob for the froth/steam is plastic. Nonetheless, it is well made. Moreover, the price point makes it clear it can't be a premium expresso machine. I realize this doesn't sound like a great review of this product but on the contrary it is meant to say that - it is a quality machine based in the price point. I read the manual and personalized the settings for me and I have very little critique. The 2 in 1 portafilter is quality...the water dispenser "top fill" function is good; no need to remove the unit. Frother unit works well...just wish it pulled out a little more...drip tray could be wider as it's a little difficult getting a wide-mouth cup in without taking out the main tray...not a real hassle though. All in all....it's a 9.5 in my opinion. Functions are great...easy to understand and makes a great expresso, americano, latte and variable of each 👍👍 Great deal for the price!

Read the manual directions thoroughly to make the perfect cup.
Color: Sterling Silver
I’ve been using this machine daily for 9 weeks. I absolutely love it! It’s easy and delicious. It took about 90 minutes to thoroughly read the manual which was very helpful in making the perfect pressure crema. The machine quality is good. If it lasts several years I’ll rate it fantastic. That is tbd. It is a great value for the money and aesthetically pleasant sitting on the countertop. Love it!

Great value
Color: Sterling Silver
Nice machine. Makes great espresso and steam wand works well and heats up fast. Just wish the porta filter was made better with wire clip to hold basket in instead of groove and dimple setup. Used grinds cant be simply tapped out as a single puck. you need to dig them out with a spoon. Not the end of the world but I was spoiled with a Breville Ive used in the past. Still would definitely recommend great unit at this price point. Makes delicious coffee

Time btwn brews
Color: Sterling Silver
Love the sleek look and just the right size for counter top. Makes a great cup and foaming wand is great. Be sure to let first stream of water out before frothing. Definitely need a napkin or towel handy. Only one drawback I can see so far. After making an espresso it takes a bit of time to cool down before it allows you to brew next one. There’s two of us so we need to stagger our espresso making. Espresso could also be a bit hotter. All in all it’s a nice machine and does the job.
