Good King Henry is an archaic, centuries-old perennial vegetable of many interesting names: poor-man’s asparagus, Lincolnshire spinach and various others.

This 2-foot-tall spinach relative, occurs as an ancient semi-wild vegetable across Europe. It’s a fun addition to wild plant gardens and food forests (and yes, it can tolerate partial shade).

The young, spring shoots of Good King Henry can be clipped like asparagus, while the spring and summer foliage can be clipped and cooked identically to spinach. (Note: by late summer the plant becomes tough, and excessive in oxalic acid, making it less pleasant to eat). More creative preparations of this plant use the flowers (like broccoli), the rhizomes, and even the seeds (which are prepared like quinoa).

This plant is best established with cold stratification (as expected from a northern and high elevation European species), and it is best planted in compost- or humus-rich soil. Additionally, we think Good King Henry is better established through direct sowing in well-prepared ground rather than in transplant trays.

Additionally, here’s few cultural notes to keep in mind with Good King Henry:

First, this is still a wild species, not a plant that has been ‘improved’ or bred for exceptional yields. Don’t rush your harvests. Allow Good King Henry to grow for several years before harvesting. This will give the plants a chance to fully establish themselves and be more tolerant of human browsing.

Second, don’t over-harvest. Taking more than 25% of this plant’s biomass in a single year is probably too taxing.

Third – one plant can make more plants! Mature specimens of Good King Henry can be divided with good effect. Dig in early autumn to cut and separate rhizomes into new individual plants.

Ummmm🙄 not indestructible!
Color: Yellow Green, Size: 6 Inch, Color: Yellow Green, Size: 6 Inch
I have a Aussie doodle ( 1 1/2 yr old) so I decided to get her this one for Christmas and she loved it (she plays soccer with my grandkids-so I thought it would be a perfect gift and the colors are so cool green and yellow) however ..if your dog is like mine, she busted it within two days first tried chewing off the handles so I decided to cut the rest of them off-then proceeded to tear one of the pentagons entirely off and finally completely busted it… which made her very happy, but I was very sad!! If your dog is not a chewer and does not stop until she tears it apart, especially if it has some kind of noise maker which this does not-it’s a great ball and really well made! She loved it from the minute she got it played with it-wouldn’t let us take it away from her! It is made and looks like a real soccer ball. So I will have to keep searching for an indestructible soccer ball🙄😁

My dog loves this.
Color: Black Green, Size: 6 Inch, Color: Black Green, Size: 6 Inch
I have a large Cane Corso who could obviously shred this but, she loves it. This ball is holding up really well. We use it for outside play and she loves batting it around and swinging it from the loops.

Great Toy for Endless Fun!
The JW Pet Hol-ee Roller Small is such a fantastic toy! It’s lightweight, flexible, and perfect for my pup to carry around and chew on. I love the design it’s durable enough to hold up to play but still soft on their teeth. You can even stuff it with treats to keep them entertained longer, which makes it super versatile. The small size is just right for my little dog, and the assorted colors are a fun bonus. This has quickly become one of their favorite toys! Highly recommend for small dogs who love to play and chew.

Great for playing fetch.
The hol-ee balls come in different sizes. I have an assortment. I love to stuff them with treats for my pet and watch him try to get them out. The holes make it easier for my dog to pick up the ball when we play fetch. I match the treat size with the hole size of each ball size. These are sturdy toys and can stand up to rough play.
