Musa basjoo A real tropical stunner for the non-gardening friends and relatives! Leave out during the winter without protection and the frost will cut the leaves and stem back to the ground, only to shoot again next year. Protect and it will begin to shoot from the top of the stem, therefore producing a bigger plant year on year. Excellent for beginners. Conditions: Full Sun or Partial Shade, Hardy and will withstand a minimum temperature of -15°C.

  • Common Name: Japanese Fibre Banana, Hardy Banana.
  • Situation: Full sun, moist, well-drained soil.
  • Eventual height: 6m in the tropics!
  • Eventual spread: 3m though easily kept to less.
  • Hardiness: -15C or lower.
  • Supplied: These plants are in 5 litre large growers pots 40-50cm central plant stem. Due to the tissue-paper like delicate nature of the leaves, we remove them prior to packing. Japanese banana plants produce new leaves rapidly during the summer months. Currently Dormant for the Winter.

Firstly the Japanese Fibre Banana neither comes from Japan, nor is it cultivated for fibre - so as common names, go, this is fairly inaccurate! Hardy Banana, however, hits the nail squarely on the head as this giant herbaceous perennial has been know to come back from beneath ground after -20C. Typically, however, gardeners generally tend to try to keep as much stem as possible - a useful technique for this is illustrated here.

During the growing season Musa basjoo is almost impossible to overfeed or overwater and will repay your kindness with a new long leaf every week.

The hardiest of the bananas, Musa basjoo is also very quick growing and - with its enormous, sail-sized foliage giving a luxuriant sense of lush jungle or the relaxed air of a colonial plantation - is an essential requirement for the Tropical British style. Surviving even the harshest winters (the winter of 2010-11 saw temperatures drop in most areas to between -10°C and -14°C),

Musa basjoo is such a wonderful plant, it is surprising perhaps, that it isn't seen cultivated more often. All that it really requires is a little extra attention in the autumn months, particularly in its first two years, to prepare it safely for winter. Its foliage is cut down by the first hard frost and this is nothing to be concerned about. The parts of the plant you should be looking to protect are the roots and the thick pseudostem. There are a number of ways to do this - a thick mulching with straw, hay or leaves around the roots, topped perhaps with bubble wrap or horticultural fleece and likewise the pseudostems can be wrapped in any dry insulating material: straw wrapped with fleece is ideal. Insulating the pseudostems ensures the plant already has some height from which to refoliate again. In the spring, as the weather warms up again, it bursts once again into life, new leaves emerging from the old trunks and new growth sprouting from its base.

A small Musa basjoo planted in the spring and protected through its first two winters in this manner is perfectly capable of reaching 10 feet in its third year, after which it will already be a large multi-stemmed clump. Depending upon your location and the adjacent microclimate, it may not need much further winter protection - if any at all - in the following years although it is always a wise precaution.

Keep it well watered during the summer heat and fed with extra nitrogen to sustain those massive jungle-look leaves and it will eventually reward you with its huge and indescribably exotic-looking inflorescence. This extraordinary flower, a bulging pendulous mass of tepals, stigmas and stamens dangles down from above you from its thick and curiously-suggestive knobbly rachis like the flaccid member of some well-hung botanical horse. Small somewhat insignificant fruit bracts form from behind the base of the flower but they are - unfortunately - not edible.

Once thought to have been native to the Ryukyu islands of Japan, it is now understood to have been introduced there from China where it is found wild in Sichuan province.

Q. Will it grow in a pot?
A. Almost any plant can be grown successfully in a pot and provided it is supplied with adequate food and water and re-potted when required, it makes a fantastic pot plant. However, its size may be restricted in a pot.

Q. How much food and water should I give it?
A. Plenty. It’s a greedy plant and loves moist but not waterlogged conditions. Yellow leaves are a sign that its hungry, and slow growth is often due to lack of water during the growing season. Plants in the ground benefit from a liberal dose of manure at planting time and annually thereafter. Plants in pots can be fed weekly during the growing season with a high nitrogen feed.

Tiny, but mighty
Color: Black
I ordered this in July, 2023, and it works very well, great speed. I use it every single morning, to mix my mushroom coffee, cinnamon, and collagen protein. If you're looking for a really good frother, this probably isn't going to meet that demand. It does give some froth, but nothing crazy. I have read reviews that mention "no longer worked after replacing batteries", but mine is still great even after replacing them, which I didn't have to do until after 3 months of usage. I don't know if the color matters in relation to that, but I bought the red one. I would definitely recommend this product.

Works well but….
Color: Sliver
Only had it a few days and although it seems to work well the foam circle around the power button fell off into my drink.

The BEST Frother!!! (with a ONE YEAR UPDATE as of February 2026!)
Color: Black, Size: normal
I absolutely LOVE this little gem of a product. LOVE IT!! I use this thing every single day to mix up powdered collagen into a latte. It is so much fun to use. Every time I use it I sing out loud, "Oh little frother....where have you been all my life??" Ha ha! My brother had one at his house that we used to make whipped cream from heavy cream and I was honestly amazed at how quickly 2-3 ounces of heavy cream turned into delicious whipped cream for our coffees (like less than 10 seconds!) My brother has the kind that rests on a little stand, but honestly I did not want that type because the stand seemed unstable and honestly, a PITA to have standing on the counter. I like that this one does not have a stand. At first I thought the battery was going to die instantly, because it slowed down at first when I tried the first few times. But, I figured out how to use it and the trick of it is to not submerge it too far down into the drink where the little motor will struggle to keep up. Instead, I move it around a bit, giving it little periods of rest towards the top of the drink where the motor can more easily whip the liquid around. I have had this several months and the original battery just keeps on chuggin' even with daily use. The speed is crazy fast and makes the milk froth up so nicely. My collagen gets mixed up within seconds. I am talking 3-5 seconds at most. This little guy is an absolute MUST for anyone wanting to mix up protein powder, collagen, powdered vitamins/quercetin (which is famous for being extremely difficult to mix into orange juice.) It works that great. I seriously just love using it so much and should have bought one years ago. It is rare to buy a product that is super reasonable in cost and turns out to work really well and be worth every penny. It is also very easy to clean--a quick rinse under the faucet or a little sudsy scrub and you are good to go for the next time. I sought out this particular brand after reading another customer's review of a different brand frother. She pointed out that this brand was head and shoulders above the other types she has tried and I believe she is probably right. The "ON" button is at the top so it does not get in the way or splashed with liquid or anything. I use this with other drinks too, like to mix lemon juice with stevia sweetener into water, MSM powder into pomegranite juice, and just regular coffee with half and half to give the coffee a more luxurious mouthfeel when I do not feel like taking the time to make a latte or cappuccino. This frother is seriously the best. I wish there was a different color to select other than black but it was not a deal breaker, obviously. I would 100% purchase this again if needed. UPDATE, 02/21/26: I have now had this little frother for ONE FULL YEAR! And I am here to say that, in my humble opinion, it has won my personal award for "Best Product Purchased For Me" for the year 2025! I use this little guy EVERY day to make a latte, and sometimes multiple times a day to mix up other drinks, and he is just chuggin' along on the same battery as the day he arrived in the mail back in February 2025. Now my husband is hooked on it too. Here are the drinks we have used it for in the past year: - whirling up MCT oil into coffee; - mixing baking soda, water, and flavored stevia drops (it's an emergency stomach ulcer elixir that I drink sometimes) - frothing up raw, organic cocoa powder with milk and sugar - my daily lattes with collagen powder - mixing up any number of liquid vitamin tinctures that I take with water - whipping up a teaspoon of wheatgrass powder into 2 or 3 ounces of water for a quick shot - as stated earlier, mixing thoroughly quercetin and vitamin C powders into orange juice I am sure I have used it for a few other drinks but these are the ones we use it for the most. I stand by my original review and opinion. This is, hands down, THE BEST MINI FROTHER!! Congratulations little frother, on winning the award for being the best purchase for me in the year 2025! I will come back here in February 2027 with a brief update on how my little frother is working 24 months from purchase. ANOTHER UPDATE, 05/26/26: The two double AA batteries FINALLY took their last breath on May 26, 2026. The original batteries lasted a full one year and four months (and someone has used it AT LEAST once per day, every day, without fail.) Two brand new batteries went in, and I guess it must be because the batteries are 100% fresh, but I swear that now this frother is working even better than the day I got it!

Great Mixer At A Great Price.
Color: Black, Size: normal
I purchased this mixer over 6 months ago. I use it at least 2 to 3 times a day to mix fiber into a flavored drink. It also gets used for mixing gravy and Chinese sauces. So from light to medium duty and no problems at all. One battery lasted over 4 months. I did try an alternate wand mixer($15 to $20) with variable speed to try and slow the mixing down a bit. It's low speed(fast) was the same as this mixer so I sent it back and kept this one. In addition to being more economical the simplicity of the single speed should give it good reliability. Lastly, if it gets damaged you're only out ~$7.00
