Chestnut Seedlings (Castanea spp.)

Chestnuts are remarkable trees that have inspired many people across the world with their beauty, tenacity and incredible food production ability. Historically, chestnuts were deeply woven into American culture, but when chestnut blight was inadvertently introduced to our shores the native chestnut (C. dentata) was functionally eliminated from the landscape. Nowadays, chestnuts exist mostly out of the public mind and are a very underutilized tree crop in the United States. This is changing, though, as interest in chestnuts is growing and many blight resistant varieties are being planted. Chestnuts produce an annual crop of nuts unlike many other nut trees that only produce large crops in mast years. The starchy nuts, which have a pleasantly sweet flavor, have many uses and can be roasted, boiled, used in soups and stews, or ground into flour. We offer bare root seedlings of Chinese and hybrid chestnut both of which have resistance to chestnut blight. Chestnuts seem to prefer well drained, loamy soils, but with care can be grown in heavier clay soils as well. They are monoecious and while can technically self pollinate they require other genetically different chestnuts nearby in order to produce a meaningful crop. Chestnuts are wind pollinated so be sure to plant relatively close to each other (no more than 100’ or so). Generally hardy in zones 5-8.

We have several varieties available this season:

Chinese Chestnut: an excellent tree that is highly resistant to chestnut blight and generally produces medium to large nuts that are well suited for human or wildlife consumption. Our seed is gathered locally from mature, healthy parent trees. Plant at least two for pollination. These are a mix of first and second year seedlings ranging from 12-20" tall. Some are branching and others are still whips. Generally hardy to zone 5.

Hybrid Chestnut: These trees were grown from seed collected from a pair of mature, local trees that are very productive. They appear to be hybrid trees with predominantly Chinese characteristics. The medium sized nuts are notably sweet right off the tree. The parent trees do show some signs of blight, but have grown for several decades without succumbing so they are at least somewhat tolerant of it. Very exciting trees. We offer bare root seedlings 10” or taller. Hardy to zone 5.

Seedlings of Szego: ‘Szego’ is a very vigorous complex hybrid ([C. crenata × C. pumila] × C. mollissima hybrid) notable for its large, flavorful nuts and exceptional cold hardiness. Seed sourced from Perfect Circle Farm. We are offering bare root seedlings of ‘Szego’ 10” or taller. Hardy to zone 5.

Seedlings of Pandora : ‘Pandora’ is a complex hybrid ([C. mollissima x C. seguinii] x Burbank Stump Sprout). Medium nuts with great flavor. Seed sourced from Perfect Circle Farm. We offer bare roots seedlings of ‘Pandora’ 16" or taller. Hardy to zone 6.

Seedlings of Precoce Migoule: ‘Precoce Migoule’ is a hybrid between C. Mollissima and C. sativa that ripens early and is good for northern climates. Produces medium to large nuts. Moderate blight resistance. We offer seedlings of ‘Precoce Migoule’ 10” or taller. Hardy to zone 5.

Chestnuts cannot be shipped to: CA, OR, WA.

Slightly Inaccurate but Works Well
Pros: Works perfectly for what I need it for. I use an aeropress and it's super easy to weigh the coffee going in and then the water on top of that. Then start the timer for the brew time and you've got a beautiful cup of coffee! Very bright display, easy to read, and comes with a rubber pad which makes cleanup easy. Cons: Not super accurate, but it's fine for making coffee unless you want to be exact. Sometimes the tare doesn't hold perfectly. For example, put your coffee on the scale. Tare it. Take it off. Put it back on. It might read a tenth of a gram or so one way or the other. Never impacted my coffee routine...

Been working well for over a year
Had this for over a year now and no real issues. The only issue I can think of is that if something is a bit too close to the scale, the scale can fluctuate a bit by a gram or so. Just make sure nothing is touching it, especially anything electronic. Beyond that, it's a no-nonsense scale that works great with actual tactile buttons. Its refresh rate can lag behind a tiny bit, but you get used to it by stopping your pours in anticipation. For example, I typically do 300mL pours in total, and I usually start slowing down/stopping at around 280g. Battery life is pretty good, but the battery life indicator doesn't do a good job of letting you know when you need to replace the batteries. So you may end up with it powering off mid-brew, but I've only had to replace the batteries once despite daily use over the past year or so. That being said, it's useful to also do stuff like the 4:6 method based on water level vs timer too. I'd also say it may not be extremely accurate as sometimes it fluctuates by .1 grams, but it is accurate enough for practical purposes. For reference, .1g is simply ~1 coffee bean, and unless you're an espresso perfectionist, 1 coffee bean isn't going to make any real difference. In summary: + Just the essentials if you only want the essentials + Tactile buttons + Display is pretty nice + Accurate enough for practical purposes + Battery life very good + Will work for at least a year, can't say any longer until I own it for longer + Great for the cost = WIll not refresh weight as quickly as say an acacia scale which costs at least four times as much, easy to compensate for - Battery life indicator isn't great, so it may power off mid-brew every half year or so - Sensitive to adjacent electronic devices, 1 or 2 inches is enough distance - Sensitive to adjacent objects, be mindful of anything that is touching the silicone, even if it's barely touching by a hair

Works Perfectly, Ignore "Drift" Reviews
Color: Onyx Black, Color: Onyx Black
I'm very happy with the accuracy and refresh rate of the scale. The two tone LED color scheme is a nice touch. I also like that the silicone cover is well-affixed to the scale and won't slide around. I only wish the scale came in white! Don't be fooled by other reviews. This scale doesn't "drift" any more or less than any other scale. Those people who say otherwise are likely storing it in a very different temperature environment than their use area. See photos for the test I did with boiling hot water in an uninsulated carafe. 0.0g drift on all tests, with or without the silicone protector, after several minutes of letting the carafe sit on the scale surface. The only time I experienced measurement drift was when I got the package from 30F freezing outdoor conditions, unboxed it and tried it out without letting the scale warm up to ambient. The measured weight slowly dropped until it warmed up to 70F room temp; since then it's been rock solid. That is totally normal for any scale that any manufacturer, cheap or expensive, makes. It's just how this kind of scale works. Overall if you're looking for a nice scale with timer functionality, I highly recommend the Greater Goods scale.
