Philodendron melanochrysum

Philodendron melanochrysum is an Araceae species from Colombia, known for deep green velvet leaves, pale to golden venation and adult blades that become much more elongated as the plant matures. Young leaves are smaller and more heart-shaped; older leaves gain their strongest proportions once the stem has steady upward support.

Direct sun can mark the soft leaf surface, dry air can make new growth stick or tear, and cold wet roots can slow the plant down. Bright filtered light, an airy mix, warm temperatures and higher humidity help new leaves open more evenly.

Philodendron melanochrysum leaf texture and mature shape

  • Family: Araceae, the aroid family.
  • Foliage: Deep green velvet leaves with pale to golden main veins.
  • Juvenile growth: Young leaves are smaller and more heart-shaped.
  • Mature growth: Leaves become larger and more elongated as the plant gains height.
  • Growth habit: A climbing Philodendron with aerial-root nodes along the stem.
  • Indoor development: Leaf size improves gradually on support, while young plants stay much smaller.
  • Growth rate: Moderate in warm, bright, humid conditions, slower when kept cool or too dry.
  • Safety: Toxic if chewed or swallowed by pets or children.

How Philodendron melanochrysum develops on support

Philodendron melanochrysum grows from an upward stem, and adult leaf size improves when the nodes can attach to a vertical surface. A pole, plank or similar support gives aerial roots contact points and gives each new leaf enough room to expand.

In habitat, Philodendron melanochrysum is associated with humid Colombian forest, where climbing stems develop in filtered light and consistently warm conditions. Indoors, the same growth pattern needs an airy root zone, stable moisture and enough vertical space for the stem to continue upward.

The soft leaf surface should be protected from harsh sun and repeated handling. New leaves emerge delicate and can catch if the air is dry or the plant swings between too dry and too wet. Dry air and irregular watering are most visible while a new leaf is opening.

Care for Philodendron melanochrysum foliage

  • Light: Place Philodendron melanochrysum in bright filtered light. Direct sun can scorch or bleach the leaves.
  • Water: Water after part of the mix has dried. Cold wet substrate can damage roots and stall new growth.
  • Humidity: Higher humidity helps soft new leaves unfurl without sticking or tearing.
  • Temperature: Keep warm and away from cold windows, cold floors and draughts.
  • Substrate: Use a chunky aroid mix that holds light moisture while leaving air around the roots.
  • Repotting: Repot when roots fill the pot, the mix has collapsed or the support no longer suits the stem height.
  • Fertilising: Feed lightly during active growth; reduce feeding when light levels and growth slow.
  • Propagation: Propagate from stem cuttings with at least one node, kept warm and humid while rooting.
  • Leaf care: Avoid rubbing the surface; damaged areas can remain visible on mature leaves.
  • Pruning: Remove damaged leaves at the petiole base or shorten an overlong stem above a healthy node.
  • Support: Provide a pole, plank or similar vertical surface so the stem can develop upward.
  • Semi-hydroponics: Semi-hydro can work when roots are adapted gradually and the reservoir stays clean and oxygenated.

Philodendron melanochrysum leaf issues and pests

  • Stuck new leaves: Low humidity or uneven watering can make soft new growth catch before it opens fully.
  • Brown leaf marks: Direct sun, dry roots or physical rubbing can damage the leaf surface.
  • Yellowing leaves: Check for wet roots, cold substrate or an old mix that has collapsed around the root zone.
  • Pests: Spider mites and thrips can hide on textured foliage and tender new growth, so inspect regularly.

Philodendron melanochrysum toxicity

Philodendron melanochrysum contains insoluble calcium oxalate crystals, so leaves, petioles and stems should stay away from pets and children that may chew plants.

Botanical background of Philodendron melanochrysum

Philodendron was described by Heinrich Wilhelm Schott in 1829 in Wiener Zeitschrift für Kunst, Litteratur, Theater und Mode, and the genus name means tree-loving from Greek philo- or philein and dendron. Philodendron melanochrysum was described by Linden and André and published in L’Illustration Horticole in 1873. The species epithet melanochrysum combines Greek elements for dark or black and gold, referring to the contrast between the dark leaf surface and warm pale venation.

A velvet-leaved Colombian Philodendron with dark foliage, warm venation and elongated mature leaves on support.

Cigarette smell; didn't work
Size: 4 Fl Oz (Pack of 1)
It seems authentic (compared to another brand I had bought) however............the smell is not that great. At first it seemed like coffee smell, but after rubbing into scalp it smelled like smoking/burning cigarettes. It's not horrific but the smell is noticeable. I wouldn't go out in public until after it's washed out of your hair. Hoped that it would help with hair growth but it didn't. The oil just made my hair fall out more.

Appearance, texture, and smell pass the test!
Size: 16 Fl Oz (Pack of 1)
I am rating this product on a appearance, texture and smell alone because I have not had time to use it in order to determine it's hair nourishing properties. I have studied a lot about Botana oil because there are so many products out there that have been born out of a few large names putting it out there in the market. It smells exactly like it should which is coffee and a little bit of Ash. I know that sounds strange but it really is not a bad smell. The texture and the color seem to pass the test as well. The color is a yellow brownish color. The texter is more like a butter as opposed to an oil. It puts you in the mind of shea butter. I did take a little bit out of the jar to see how oily it is and of course it's oily but once you melt it in your hands and rub it in it seems to soak in easily. This protect solid while in the jar. 100% Botana oil should never turn liquidy at all unless you have it in a very hot environment of course. I'll come back once I use the product to determine how it nourishes my hair.

Good Product
I love this brand, but haven't been able to find it lately in stores in my area. It's probably the best self tanner I've used overall. Shipping from this seller was pretty quick. Color is believable- even on my pasty pale, next to white skin. If you're like me, you have to be careful of products that turn you orange. With the "dark" shade, you still need more than one application to actually be dark. To me, that's okay because you can control the color. First application gives a nice color, second application gives a deeper tan. However, I may get the ultra dark next time. I love the sprays best because they dry fast, give the best, most even, controllable application and I have better luck with these than lotions. With lotions, you are gooey and sticky and there is more stuff transferring on your clothes. Never wear white anyway when you first apply self-tanner! Best to do it before you go to bed. I really like that it is tinted. Not only do you get an instant, believable color while you wait for the self tanner to do its job, but you can see where it goes so you don't end up with streaks. Because of the tint, place an old towel on the floor as a drop cloth. Wash your hands between applying to body parts to avoid staining your palms. Yeah, the usual Self Tanning 101 stuff. You do end up with a hint of that self-tanner smell and I have used other products that are better as far as this goes, but it's nothing too bad. They all have that smell to some degree or other. Your tan lasts about 4-5 days and is easy to exfoliate off, without flaking off in weird patches. Best of all, this product is cruelty-free and no animal testing!!

A fantastic self tanning product.
I have been using this self tanner for years. So glad Amazon carries it. It's a bit tricky to use and be prepared to use in an area that is protected. Like using a drop cloth and using care with surrounding areas. It also can stain hands and feet so use gloves and cover the bottoms of your feet. The good part after all that is ,a beautiful deep rich tan. I have fooled many using this product. You cannot spray too close or it will run or not go on evenly. It also at times has faulty cans that drip and are messy. Used to that after all this time. The liquid that leaks is green. Now after all that, it does not sound all that appealing but, trying to give some guidance because it is worth the effort. I have heard rumor that it was used on the show Baywatch to give them that true sun kissed bronze look. It literally in one spraying has you tan. You can darken by using every few days. I usually spray it on before bed, let it dry well and wear overnight to let it set up and develop. It has a sort of almond scent so the smell is decent. I will mist my face alone if I just want a bit of color during the colder months before I leave the house . I just mist a bit less and let it dry. Not saying this is the most user friendly product but, will keep working around its faults to keep glowing. Best at home tan as good as a spray tan from a salon.

Beautiful bronze color!
This is a nice spray mist tan that gradually gets deeper in color within a couple hours after application. It did not make me look orange at all rather a great beach bronze color. It’s a bit difficult to spray my legs evenly all around while staying within the range/ distance it recommends in order to avoid lines, drilling and streaks. Next time I’m asking my friend to spray me. The spray mist on skin will stay on for 3 days before it begins to wear offs. I suggest exfoliating in between spray tanning
