History & Fun Facts
Named after German botanist Ernst Dieffenbach, this plant was a Victorian parlor favorite and continues to impress plant collectors today. Its common name, “Dumb Cane,” comes from its sap, which can cause temporary speechlessness if ingested—a reminder to handle with care. Despite this, its reputation as a poisonous beauty has only made it more fascinating to grow.
Fun fact: The shimmering, speckled leaves of the Reflector give off a subtle glow in filtered light, making it one of the most visually striking Dieffenbachia varieties available.
