English Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia)

English Lavender, Lavandula angustifolia, is the classic garden lavender, valued for its fragrant gray green foliage, soft purple flower spikes, and easy going nature in sunny, well drained sites. Plants form neat, rounded mounds that look good even when not in bloom, then cover themselves in slender flower wands that sway in the breeze and fill the air with a soothing scent. Whether you are edging a path, planting a small hedge, or filling containers on a patio, English Lavender brings color, texture, and fragrance together in a compact form that works as both a practical herb and a beautiful focal point in the landscape.

Distinctive Features

English Lavender typically grows about 18 to 30 inches tall and 18 to 30 inches wide, forming a rounded shrub like clump with woody stems at the base and soft, leafy shoots toward the tips. Narrow, gray green leaves give the plant a fine texture and a silvery cast that pairs easily with stone, gravel, and a wide range of flowering companions. Tall, slender flower spikes rise above the foliage in late spring to early summer, carrying many small purple to violet blue florets that attract bees and butterflies. Even after the main bloom, the plant remains useful as a foliage accent, and flower stems can be cut for fresh or dried arrangements, sachets, and craft projects.

Growing Conditions

  • Light: Prefers full sun with at least 6 hours of direct light daily for best flowering, compact growth, and strong fragrance.
  • Soil: Thrives in well drained, lean to average soils; avoids heavy, wet ground and performs best in sandy or gravelly conditions that keep roots on the dry side.
  • Water: Water regularly after planting to establish; once rooted in, water deeply but infrequently, allowing the top of the soil to dry between waterings.
  • Hardiness: Well suited to many temperate regions where English lavender is grown outdoors, especially when given sharp drainage in winter.
  • Size: Generally forms a mound about 18 to 30 inches tall and 18 to 30 inches wide at maturity, depending on variety, climate, and care.
  • Growth Rate: Moderate grower that fills in steadily without quickly outgrowing beds, borders, or containers.

Ideal Uses

  • Edging and Low Hedges: Plant in a row along walks, drives, or bed edges to create a low, fragrant ribbon of gray green foliage and purple bloom.
  • Containers and Patio Pots: Excellent in clay pots, troughs, and mixed planters where the mounded habit and vertical flower spikes add height, scent, and color.
  • Herb and Scent Gardens: Perfect near seating areas, entries, and paths so aromatic foliage and flowers can be brushed and enjoyed up close.
  • Cottage and Mediterranean Gardens: Mix with roses, salvias, grasses, and sun loving perennials for classic cottage combinations or set into gravel and stone for a Mediterranean feel.
  • Cut and Dried Flowers: Flower stems can be cut for fresh bouquets or dried for sachets, wreaths, and crafts that bring lavender fragrance indoors.

Low Maintenance Care

  • Watering: After establishment, water when the top inch of soil is dry; avoid constant moisture or soggy conditions that can lead to root problems.
  • Pruning: Shear lightly after the main flush of bloom to remove spent spikes and encourage a dense mound; avoid cutting back into old, woody stems with no leaves.
  • Fertilizing: Requires only light feeding; in spring, apply a small amount of balanced, slow release fertilizer if soil is very lean, since excessive nutrients can cause soft, floppy growth.
  • Mulching: Use a thin layer of gravel or coarse mulch around the base to improve drainage and keep foliage off wet soil, avoiding heavy organic mulches against the stems.
  • Seasonal Care: In colder climates, provide excellent drainage and a sunny, sheltered spot; in late winter or early spring, tidy lightly to remove any winter damage and keep the plant compact.

Why Choose English Lavender?

  • Classic Lavender Look: Soft purple flower spikes and gray green foliage deliver the traditional lavender appearance gardeners love.
  • Fragrant Foliage and Flowers: Strong, soothing scent adds a sensory layer to paths, patios, and outdoor seating areas and can be enjoyed indoors in cut or dried form.
  • Compact, Versatile Habit: Mounded form fits easily into borders, hedges, rock gardens, and containers without overwhelming neighbors.
  • Sun and Heat Tolerant: Performs well in hot, bright exposures when planted in well drained soil or raised beds.
  • Multi Purpose Plant: Serves as an ornamental, a pollinator plant, and a useful herb for cut flowers, drying, and simple home projects.

With its rounded habit, fragrant gray green foliage, and classic purple flower spikes, English Lavender is an excellent choice for adding color, scent, and a refined, low maintenance focal point to sunny borders, pathways, and containers.

Water Shoes for 3-Week Trip to Amazon, Machu Picchu and the Galapagos
Size: 10.5, Color: Blue/Grey
Bought these shoes (along with a pair of Merrell Gore-TEX Moab Speed 2 GTX) for a three-week trip through some pretty eclectic weather and terrain. I selected these over some much more expensive brands and was very happy with my decision. I typically wear a size 11 athletic shoe (I measure a 10.5), but the 11–11.5 Humtto shoes were way too large and good not get a good fit. I returned that pair, and downsized to the 10.5. They fit me perfectly. Before leaving on the trip I used them to work out at the gym and do some light hiking. They were first seriously tested in the Amazon. The soles provide pretty darn good traction, and they can be worn with or without socks. Because of their hiking and quick drying capabilities, I ended up using these shoes about 50% of the trip. They look great, are comfortable, can be adjusted for fit, and have a decent (medium) arch and heel padding. They are not zero drop from heel to toe, but pretty close. The EVA midsole and memory foam insole for cushioning is great, but do not make the mistake I made by heating it on a heater to accelerate drying. It warped the insole a bit (they are still usable). These are great and survived some pretty extensive testing throughout Peru and Ecuador. If you are stepping into some pretty questionable conditions, these sure are a great back up to your hiking shoes when it may get sloshy and dry shoes are required for the next day.

Excellent shoes for what you’re buying them.
Size: 12, Color: Black
My 2nd pair of this brand. These are awesome. Easy to come off and get on. They stay cool in the summer, they are comfortable with or without socks. I use them in lake and pool, and they still look new. Very inexpensive, and for a change they look actually nicer in person than in the photos. I dont know how they would be doing any athletics but for everything else, including walking a lot and standing for hours, they worked great.

Surprisingly awesome!
Size: 10.5, Color: Dark Gray/Beige
I have only been wearing these for a few days so I may have to revise the review over time, but so far these shoes are absolutely outstanding. If you owned and enjoyed the original Salomon TechAmphibians, later ruined with new designs by the maker, these are their natural heirs. I took a chance on these shoes since the design is very similar. They are lightweight and comfortable and they provide great footbed support whether loose or tightly laced. Like the early TechAmphibians, they also have the cool feature of a collapsing heel upper, allowing their use as slides. They are also half the price that the Salomons sold even 10 or more years ago. The sole has an aggressive tread pattern and is quite grippy wet or dry. I measure as 10.5 D on the shoe size device but almost no shoes in that size fit me in the last few years. I got the 11-11.5 size first but it was swimming on me. 10.5 fits well with a bit of extra room so I can wear them with or without socks.

Great shoes
Size: 10, Color: Grey, Size: 10, Color: Grey
I got 2 pairs of these specifically for a water rafting trip. The first pair was a little large, so I went down a half size ( and gave the larger pair to my son). They are comfortable, even for wide feet - although after a long day of use in the water, there was some chaffing on the outsides of my feet. It loosened up a bit across my wide foot, after getting wet. These worked great! They have adjustable strap across the back, that pulls tight on the outside. the laces are elastic and tighten by pulling and then pushing the stopper down onto the laces. They didn't slip (loosen) but, to get them tight, I had excessive amount of laces hanging out (had to tuck them into the tongue.

Exactly what I was looking for
Size: 9-9.5, Color: Black Denim Blue
Perfect for what I wanted in an active casual shoe. Love the tread, it's both grippy and durable but flexible, the fit, adjustability, easy to take on and off, perfect amount of cushion and stability. Can wear with or without socks comfortably.
