Embodying the essence of resilience and beauty, Sempervivum globiferum ssp. hirtum 'Hedgehog' is a captivating succulent hailing from the mountainous regions of Europe. This hardy plant presents an exquisite array of tightly packed rosettes, each leaf adorned with a unique coat of fine, hair-like cilia, giving it the appearance of a whimsical, green hedgehog. The foliage, a rich tapestry of deep greens with hints of red at the tips, transforms throughout the seasons, offering a dynamic display of nature's artistry.
'Hedgehog' is not only a visual delight but also a testament to the tenacity of life, reaching sizes of up to 4 inches in height and width. Its compact form and ability to produce numerous offsets make it an ideal candidate for creating a lush, textured ground cover in rock gardens or adding an element of intrigue to container arrangements. When grown in a pot, this succulent's rosettes may spill over the edges, adding a charming "spiller" effect to mixed plantings.
Adding to its allure, 'Hedgehog' surprises with vibrant, star-shaped flowers in the summer, contrasting beautifully against its spikey foliage. These blooms, usually in shades of pink or red, add a pop of color to the garden, attracting pollinators and admirers alike. Remarkably drought-tolerant and requiring minimal care, Sempervivum globiferum ssp. hirtum 'Hedgehog' is a perfect choice for gardeners seeking to add a touch of rugged beauty to their outdoor spaces or indoor collections.
