Horsetail Reed Uses in Phoenix Landscapes

Water Feature and Pool Accent

Horsetail Reed is the go-to plant for framing water features, fountains, and pool edges in Phoenix. Its upright stems reflect beautifully in water and create a spa-like atmosphere. Plant in contained beds or submerged pots along the water's edge for a clean, resort-style look.

Modern Planter and Courtyard Accent

The vertical, bamboo-like stems make Horsetail Reed ideal for narrow planters, raised beds, and courtyard gardens in Scottsdale and Tempe. Use tall rectangular planters for a contemporary look that adds height without width. Perfect for entryways, patios, and commercial storefronts.

Privacy Screen in Containers

Plant Horsetail Reed in a row of large containers along a fence line or balcony railing for a living privacy screen. The dense stems at 3–4 feet tall provide partial screening with an elegant, modern aesthetic. Pair with Desert Spoon or Dwarf Olive for a layered design.

Best Time to Plant Horsetail Reed in Phoenix

Fall (October–November) is the ideal planting window for Horsetail Reed in the Phoenix Valley. Cooler temperatures reduce water stress while the plant establishes its root system. Spring (February–April) is the second-best option. Horsetail Reed can handle summer planting if kept consistently moist, but fall gives the strongest start.

How to Plant Horsetail Reed

  1. Choose a contained space — use planters, raised beds, or underground root barriers to prevent unwanted spreading.
  2. Dig wide, not deep — 2x the root ball width, same depth as the container.
  3. Check for caliche — ensure drainage to prevent waterlogging.
  4. Backfill with a moisture-retaining soil mix — 50/50 native soil and organic compost works well.
  5. Spacing — 12–18 inches apart for a full, dense look within one season.
  6. Mulch — 2 inches of bark mulch helps retain moisture around the base.

Watering Horsetail Reed in Phoenix

First Year Watering Schedule

Weeks 1–2: Daily, keeping soil consistently moist. Month 1–3: Every 2–3 days. Month 3–6: Every 3–5 days. After Year 1: Every 5–7 days in summer; every 10–14 days in winter. Horsetail Reed likes more water than most desert plants.

Drip Irrigation

Place two 2-GPH emitters per plant, 6–8 inches from the stems. Keep soil evenly moist but not waterlogged. Horsetail Reed thrives with consistent moisture and performs best near water features or with reliable drip systems.

How fast does Horsetail Reed grow in Phoenix?
Fast — Horsetail Reed fills containers and planting beds within one growing season. New stems emerge from underground rhizomes throughout spring and summer.

Will Horsetail Reed spread and become invasive?
Yes, Horsetail Reed spreads aggressively through underground rhizomes if planted directly in the ground. Always use containers, raised beds with solid bottoms, or root barriers to keep it contained.

Can Horsetail Reed grow in full Phoenix sun?
Yes, it handles full sun but appreciates some afternoon shade during the hottest summer months. In full sun, ensure consistent watering to prevent stem browning.

Is Horsetail Reed good for pool areas?
Excellent — its upright form creates minimal debris, and it thrives near water. Plant in contained beds along pool edges for a resort-style look.

How Many Horsetail Reed Do I Need?

Horsetail Reed is almost always grown in containers or root-barriered beds in Phoenix so it cannot run by rhizome. Plant on 12 to 18 inch centers (15 inches is the reliable average) for a solid, dense stand within one growing season. Use this guide for a contained linear planter or bed:

Contained run length Plants needed (at 15 in spacing)
3 ft planter 3 plants
6 ft planter 5 plants
10 ft bed 8 plants
20 ft bed 16 plants

For a single decorative pot, 3 to 5 stems clustered together read as a full clump right away. For a screening row, stay at the tight 12 inch end of the range.

Horsetail Reed Season-by-Season in Phoenix

  • Spring (Feb–Apr): Fresh jointed stems push up from the rhizome as soil warms. A strong second planting window. Topdress containers and step up watering as days lengthen.
  • Summer (May–Sep): Holds its bright green where many desert plants fade, but only with steady moisture. In full reflected heat the stem tips can brown, so give afternoon shade and never let a container dry out. Monsoon humidity (Jul–Sep) suits it well.
  • Fall (Oct–Nov): Prime planting season. Cool nights and warm soil let it root in fast with low water stress.
  • Winter (Dec–Jan): Stays evergreen and upright through Valley winters. Cold-hardy far below our lows (rated to zone 3), so no frost protection is needed in Phoenix. Trim any winter-tatty stems at the base.

Plant It With

  • Giant Tropical Bird of Paradise: bold tropical leaves behind the fine vertical stems for a lush poolside layer.
  • Foxtail Fern: soft bright-green plumes that soften the stiff reed texture in a shaded courtyard bed.
  • Desert Spoon: a spiky silver rosette that plays off the smooth green reeds in modern desert designs.
  • Dwarf Olive: a tidy evergreen backdrop that frames a contained run of Horsetail Reed.

Is Horsetail Reed Right for Your Yard?

Horsetail Reed is the right pick if you want clean vertical structure beside a pool, fountain, or in a modern planter, and you can give it steady moisture and a contained root zone. It tolerates full Phoenix sun with enough water and shrugs off winter cold. It is not a fit if you want a low-water desert plant or plan to set it loose in open ground, where its aggressive rhizomes will spread well beyond where you want them. Keep it in pots or barriered beds and it stays a well-behaved, year-round accent.

Great chew toy
Size: 10.5 inch Rubber Flex Tread
This is my second time buying the Tonka rings. My dog loves this chew toy. It does take him a bit to destroy them. I give this toy to him as a reward otherwise it be destroyed in 3 days. I have a pitty. So other dogs it should last longer. They are shin whackers and hurt when they connect. So I make sure to watch the dog and toy around small kids and elderly to be safe. They are heavy and made well.

Finally a toy we can leave out!
Size: 10.5 inch Rubber Flex Tread, Size: 10.5 inch Rubber Flex Tread
There are very few toys that we can leave out for our 11 month old golden. Which is a shame because as a small puppy, we taught him to bring us a toy to initiate play instead of nipping. Ropes or stuffies never lasted more than a few minutes so they always had to be taken away. One time he brought us a benenbone to play tug. So I tried this as a last resort. Finally something we can keep out for him! It’s not completely indestructible. He has figured out how to pull bits of tread off. But he chewed hard on it for a solid 20 minutes and it’s still intact with the exception of a few small tread pieces. Can’t say that for 99% of the other dog toys on the market! UPDATE: OK, so it's definitely not indestructible. After a few days of dedicated gnawing, he has almost chewed through the yellow ring so we can't leave him too unsupervised with it. I'm still going to leave it as 5 stars since it's the best tug toy that I have found so far and we have tried a lot! I may buy another one and just make sure I don't let him freely chew on it for any length of time.

Really wanted this toy to be better...
Size: 10.5 inch Rubber Flex Tread
I got this toy because I have 3 large dogs that all like to pull things. I can't always play with them even though they follow me everywhere wanting to play, so I saw this toy and thought it would be good because it would give them something they can tug away at with each other. I saw the thick rubber and thought it would last awhile, but I was wrong. My German Shepherd and Pyrenees mix chewed though the first tire rather quick, and before I realized, I was finding chunks of tire around the house and yard. Thankfully, none of them tried to eat it. It seems like it could be a good toy for an aggressive chewer IF they are smaller and not as strong as these large dogs are, but it did not hold up long to mine.

My dog's favorite toy* (*see durability warnings*)
Style: Variety Pack - Large (3-pack)
This is a plush toy, so *if your dog is a destroyer of things, it'll destroy this toy easily/instantly* & if they're not destroyed right away, I'd definitely expect them to be destroyed eventually just given the type of toy it is- plus much of that depends on the way your dog plays. That said, this plush, multiple squeaker toy has held up really well for the amount of use it gets in our home. Because it contains 3 separate squeakers in it, these toys have been like heaven for my 3 year old, male, Toy Fox Terrier to play with- he freaks out when we squeeze more than 1 squeaker at the same time & I don't do all 3 at once bc I think his head might actually explode LoL 😋! Seriously, ever since he's grown out of puppy-hood, he's much less destructive with his toys now, so we are able to buy toys like these for him, have him go nuts freaking out on them & have them hold up pretty well/for a while before it's time for a replacement, yet since they're not very expensive, it's not terribly hard to replace them if needed (he's still using the last toy in the original 3 pack we got for him). It's great for fetching via a "flinging" motion (they're not heavy enough to actually throw) if you have a smaller dog who doesn't cover much distance too readily, but the best part of this toy is the elongated design of it, because it makes for a perfect "tug of war" type of playtime toy with my little buddy (tugging is a behavior which you may or may not want to encourage your dog to do depending on its disposition). Since my dog thankfully isn't really destructive & doesn't have issues releasing a toy from a tugging interaction anymore, these items have held up pretty well for a plush type toy, but again, if you own a dog known for destroying their toys, or anything else for that matter, these probably aren't going to work out well for you. Given they're pretty cheap to replace, for a throw ready, tug toy which has 3 different places for a dog to chomp on to make it squeak, they've turned out to be perfect for our smaller sized pup & have become a favorite toy of my little guy which he's always ready to play with, at any time, with anyone- he's got it ready to go a lot of the time when we get back home to him after being out. Again, you'll need to go with Kong or something similarly durable if your dog destroys things or is still a puppy who doesn't know better, but for an average amount of wear & tear they've held up really well while remaining at the top of my dog's favorite toy list. So recommended for sure, but just know if you've got a chewy character on your hands, despite all the fun they'd have with these, I'd get a more durable toy instead of this one as these plush toys, while good quality, will not hold up to prolonged abuse (as is the case with most plush toys sold). However, for an "average destruction" level dog, it seems well enough made to last a decent amount of time & they're a source of an enjoyable playtime for our dog & therefore for us as his owners as well! Definitely recommend for it's features, like 3 different squeakers, it's great design for a tugging style of play & it's overall good durability for a plush style toy. 👍
