Alocasia odora California is a 'Little Big Plant'. It's a dwarf Elephant Ear by comparison to other varieties but still grows into a clump with multiple stems 1.5m x 1.5m in the fullness of time and 40-50cm leaves, roughly the size of a large dinner platter. Alocasia odora California can be identified by its connected leaf blade at the base of the leaf.
Ideal for intermediate plant keepers or beyond
Light Requirements: Part-day direct sun or bright indirect light. These are best in rooms with 2 or 3 walls with glass and positioned right by a window.
Moisture & Soil Requirements: Must have evenly moist soil with good drainage in warm seasons - never soggy soil. Dial back watering frequency in winter unless you have dry air inside from heat sources. Mist during dry periods. Let this plant partly dry out between watering, the top 5cm or so can be dry before requiring water. If in doubt, use a moisture metre.
Growth & Nutrients: Clumping growth habit, grows upwards in a large V shape. Can handle dry spells. Suits patios and outdoor containers, ideal coastal plant, best suited to warm frost-free areas. Aggressive root system so keep this plant away from water pipes. Feed with a general-purpose fertiliser for containers from the start of spring each year to autumn when growth slows down.
Temperature, Humidity & Ambient requirements: Prefers warm environments outside, avoid soggy soilts, prefers evenly moist soil.
Toxicity: Mildly toxic to pets and people.
