Zephyranthes 'Prairie Sunset' is an introduction from the late bulb guru, Thad Howard, of what he considered the most dependable rain lily in his collection. Howard obtained it originally as a mislabeled plant in a shipment of rain lilies from India, later determined to be a cross of Zephyranthes 'Capricorn' x Zephyranthes candida. For us, Zephyranthes 'Prairie Sunset' has a flowering window from July through September, bursting into a blitz of flowers 2 days after each rain event. The dense 1' tall x 2' wide (with age) clumps of glossy green grass-like foliage are just topped first with dark pink rosy buds that open to a mass of light salmon-pink flowers. During the second day of opening, the flowers undergo a fascinating color change to blush pink.

Maintenance:

Zephyranthes, the rain lilies, are very low maintenance where they are winter-hardy (generally zone 7 and warmer). The foliage can be removed when it has turned brown and that is about it. Often even this is not necessary. Rain lily cultivars that multiply rapidly, and many do, often push bulbs up out of the ground as they get crowded. These need to be reset so the bulbs are underground, protected from freezing weather. When a rain lily gets to this stage it is a good time to dig the whole clump, divide into smaller clumps and replant them. This can be done most any time of the year.

Rain lilies are also very easy to grow from seed; usually germinating in a weeks time. If bulbs are grown continuously, which requires a sunny frost free location in the winter, they can bloom in a few years.

Rain lilies can be grown in pots where they are not winter hardy. Protect them from freezing over winter by either bringing them into a heated space and keeping them growing over winter, or allowing them to go dormant by drying them out and storing them in a cool but frost free location.

Growing Conditions:

A sunny location is best; more sun, more flowers. All will thrive in gardens of average moisture. None need the long hot dry spell that some species native to the southwest US and Mexico are subjected to in their native habitat. A few species, such as Zephyranthes candida from Argentina will thrive in a wet spot. All respond to rain with a huge flush of blooms. It often takes very little rain for them to bloom, often just the change in barometric pressure. No amount of irrigation will trigger the big flush of bloom, though some rain lilies will bloom intermittently and lightly between rains. Nearly all are winter hardy in zone 7 when planted in the ground. Bulbs should be planted underground with about 1" of soil on top of the bulbs.

Natural Impact:

Perhaps one would want the Zephyranthes to bloom continuously for months on end. Yet their nature to quickly produce a stunning display of bloom, where the day before there were none, adds a degree of drama that few other plants do. Gardens have been described as the slowest of the performing arts and the stunning display of Zephyranthes and their close cousin Habranthus demand that one go out into the garden and enjoy their performance. Broad masses of rain lilies make a dramatic display; either buy multiples or multiply the ones you have by division and/or seed.

a perfect summer romance
Format: Paperback
this book was phenomenal!! i loved every page and i fell in love with the story and characters. it’s told in past and present timelines over the course of six summers and one weekend 12 years later. you get small town, second chance romance, childhood best friends to lovers to strangers to lovers, and more! some of my fav tropes in one book <3 i love the parallel events between the past and present chapters, seeing how percy and sam grown and matured but also stay the same throughout the years (iykyk - the friendship bracelets, “swear on it”, ice cream). their attraction and connection are undeniable! the book perfectly captures friendship, teenage angst, first love, loss, mistakes, and forgiveness. it’s also about finding your person, someone who understands you like no other. the writing was spectacular - it was so magical and enchanting as it encapsulated summer nostalgia at a lakeside cottage. i felt like i experienced every summer with percy and sam. i love how real and relatable the characters are. percy and sam are two flawed characters that let their fears get in their way, but they try their best to repair what they broke. i adore sam so so much, he’s the sweetest and kindest guy who loves really hard. the sarcasm and banter between the two were soo good too, i loved how we get a glimpse of what they were like at 13 and then at 30. this is the PERFECT summer read, i highly recommend it!! i promise you’ll love this if you love ‘love and other words’ by christina lauren! i didn’t think i’d find a book like laow that hits the same, but reading this book made my lil laow heart so happy 💞 i’m blown away by the fact that this is carley fortune’s debut novel and i hope there is more to come!

Sam + Percy 💕
Format: Kindle
Every Summer After is a perfect summer read and although it had been in my TBR for so long, I really enjoyed it. I’m a sucker for second chance romance and childhood friends to lovers and I was captivated immediately. Their friendship blossomed into a cute young love romance until one impulsive decision during a vulnerable moment lead to the downfall of Sam & Percy’s relationship. Now over a decade later, Percy makes the trip back to the lake to attend a funeral and memories flood back of her summers with Sam. But does time heal all wounds? Read to find out. I really love young love romances because they are innocent with heighten emotions, personal growths and can be extremely messy. Not to mention the angst that keeps me wanting to read more and this book definitely kept me engaged.

Wow, I didn’t know how much I needed this and I inhaled it. I needed to feel a bit of summer. I needed a small town. What I didn’t know I needed was a big love story. This was perfect and escapist. A perfect read to make you feel good and characters to swoon over. Can’t wait for the show now.

The perfect summer romance in a beautiful setting!
Format: Kindle
I give this book 4.75 stars rounded up to five for the purposes of this review. I really liked this story and flew through! Anyone looking for a great summer romance can find it here. This was my first Carley Fortune book, but I’d like to read more (and plan to read the sequel to this one very soon). It was so fun to experience Percy and Sam’s relationship as it developed from close friends at the age of thirteen to something much more as they got older. Their relationship was so deep and respectful. They knew everything about each other and shared so many wonderful experiences together. It felt like a very natural evolution from friendship to romance (although I did want to smack Sam a couple times, but he was young, so I’ll give him a pass). And the setting of Barry’s Bay was a beautiful, relaxing place. I wish I could live in a cabin on that lake! There were some great side characters in this book too. Sue was such a kind, loving person. Charlie was sometimes difficult to like, but he really wasn’t a bad person. Delilah definitely annoyed me at times, but she turned out to be such a good friend to Percy. I wish we’d gotten a little bit more of Chantal, because she also seemed like an amazing friend. I don’t always like a miscommunication trope in terms of breakups in romances, but this one actually made sense, because Percy and Sam were so young and trying to figure themselves out, as well as their romantic relationship. So, that part of it didn’t turn me off the overall story. I loved the ending (it made me cry), although I wish Sue’s storyline could have been different. In my opinion, this was the perfect summer romance, so if that’s what you’re looking for, I would definitely encourage you to read it!

An Amazing Debut! Dual Timeline, Second Chance Romance, and very well written!!
Format: Paperback
4.5/5 stars ⭐️ 304 pages 📚 🎶 Right Where You Left Me - Taylor Swift “They knew. Some people are lucky like that. They meet their best friend, the love of their life, and are wise enough to never let go.” In case you needed anyone else on Booksta to tell you to read this book, PLEASE go read this book!! I had very high expectations after seeing dozens of raving reviews and the story met every one! We follow Sam and Percy in a dual timeline (from Percy’s POV) through flashbacks of their teenage summers and their reunion over a decade later. I adored the flashback chapters. Watching Sam and Percy grow from awkward 13 year olds into early adulthood was nostalgic. It’ll take you back to your own childhood and the excitement and nerves of experiencing your first love. Though I did suspect what the cause of their breakup would be, it didn’t take away from any of the emotions or heartbreak I felt during those scenes! Carley has a very captivating writing style and you’ll fall in love with aspects of every character. I only felt like the last 15% was a bit rushed! The buildup was fantastic, and the betrayal was anticipated, but I was hoping for a little bit more out of the conflict, how it affected other relationships, and moving on. An extended epilogue would’ve been perfect for this book! For a debut novel, Carley did outstanding and I’m excited to see what she comes up with next! Read this if you enjoy: ⏰ dual timeline ✨ second chance romance 💖 best friends to strangers to lovers ☀️ summer vibes! 🌊 small town romance 👩‍👦‍👦 emphasis on family If you enjoyed Love and Other Words, you will LOVE this! Very similar style and vibes.
