If you have a corner that looks a little empty, the White Bird of Paradise (Strelitzia nicolai) is the architectural giant you need. Unlike its smaller orange cousin, this variety grows vertically with massive, banana-like leaves that bring immediate tropical drama to your home.
The secret to keeping it happy is bright light. This plant craves energy, so place it near your sunniest window—south or west-facing is best. You might notice the leaves splitting as they age; don't panic. That is nature’s way of letting wind pass through them in the wild, and it only adds to the character. For watering, keep the soil consistently moist during the growing season, but let the top inch dry out in winter. I also recommend wiping those big leaves down with a damp cloth occasionally to keep the pores open and the foliage shining.
