IF YOU ORDER IN WINTER/EARLY SPRING YOUR PLANT MAY ARRIVE IN WINTER SUCCULENT MODE. DURING THIS TIME, IT WILL GROW SUBSTANTIALLY SMALLER, TIGHT, SUCCULENT LEAVES. DO NOT OVER WATER DURING THIS TIME. IT WILL GROW CARNIVOROUS LEAVES IN THE SPRING.

Care Instructions

Growth Habit: Pinguicula are generally small plants; depending on the species and growth phase, they can range from 1/2” to 8” across at maturity. Most are 2-4” across. They form rosettes of leaves covered in glistening dew, which have a high turnover rate, meaning that they die back frequently, and new leaves grow at the center from the plant. They have pretty leaves, some blush red or purple, and all are covered in sparkling dew. Their flowers are hummingbird and butterfly pollinated in the wild and because their pollinators are attracted to colorful flowers, they have beautiful flowers With long neck spurs! Many species will experience a winter succulent phase. A combination of shorter photo periods, cooler temperatures, and dryer conditions trigger this phase. While this phase is not necessary for the plant to thrive, it is often out of our control whether the plants do this or not. During their succulent phase, they grow small, rounded leaves that look very different from their large carnivorous leaves. Plants in this stage will be significantly smaller than they will be in carnivorous growth. The natural cycle of Pinguicula can lead them to be in succulent growth in spring, not starting their carnivorous growth until late spring sometimes even early summer. Watching them grow their carnivorous leaves is like watching a magic trick; tiny, tight leaves begin to transform into huge, sticky, carnivorous leaves! Pinguicula can easily propagate from leaf pullings, like a succulent. They will also form small clumps over time, dividing naturally. While they can have a long life, they won’t live forever, so it is a good idea to take pullings every year. They do not have significant root systems, and the roots they have are often minimal and very short. The roots can be white, transparent, or brown, and they use these roots mainly to anchor themselves to the soil's surface (they still offer benefits, though, so please do not cut them off).

Sun: Full to part sun. Sunny windowsills indoors, in a temperature-regulated greenhouse, or under grow lights. In tropical parts of the world or very mild climates, they can be grown outdoors in dappled sun, morning sun only, or under shade cloth. They must be protected from the full afternoon sun. It is best to grow under 30% shade cloth in the summer months when grown in a greenhouse. They can benefit from 30% shade cloth if grown outdoors as well. If your plant is much greener than it should be, developing larger, more elongated leaves than normal for the species or hybrid, and does not have much dew, it may need more light.

Water & Humidity: In the late spring, summer, and early autumn, Pinguicula can be kept in the tray system with overhead watering as long as they still have carnivorous foliage. This means setting the pots in a deep saucer or tray and routinely filling that with 1/4”-1/2” water. If grown in a non-draining pot, allow room to water and water overhead frequently to keep soil media moist, but do not water so deeply as to have standing water sitting on the surface of the soil; all the water should be absorbed. When the rosettes show their very first signs of growing their smaller, tighter succulent leaves immediately begin to dry out your plants. Keep the soil on the dry side, watering them only a little and let dry out in between watering. You can usually tell how dry a species enjoys its winter by the size of its succulent leaves. The tighter, smaller leafed rosettes such a Pinguicula gypsicola or the bulb-like heterophylla and macrophylla require bone-dry conditions. Species with larger winter leaves, like a few of the moranensis varieties or agnata, enjoy winters soils just slightly damp.  Cuban species should be kept wet year-round, with only slight winter drying. When these plants are transitioning between carnivorous and succulent growth they are at the most risk of rotting, so it is better to air on the side of drier when the temperatures start to get colder and the photo periods shorten. In spring, as soon as the temperatures start to warm and the photo periods lengthen, start watering your plants more. When carnivorous leaves start to grow, begin the tray method again. (If your plant decides it does not want to make carnivorous leaves, don’t worry, sometimes they are stubborn! Water frequently and make sure your plant gets lots of light, preferably some natural light from the sun as well, to try to trigger carnivorous leaf growth. But don’t worry if your ping stays in succulent mode for a whole year, eventually it will grow carnivorous leaves again!) Pinguicula are extremely susceptible to dissolved minerals and salts in their water and poor water quality will directly contribute to decline of plants and death. Be sure to only use rainwater, reverse osmosis water, or distilled water.
Pinguicula prefer drier conditions and do not require high humidity.

Temperature: 50 degrees - 90 degrees. While not ideal, Pinguicula can tolerate brief nighttime dips to 40 as long as daytime temperatures warm back up and can tolerate brief heat waves over 90 as long as they are protected from the sun and sitting in water AND nighttime temperatures decrease. Cold temperatures are likely to kill Pinguicula, so avoid exposing them to anything below 50 if possible.

Dormancy: No true dormancy but does have a winter succulent phase during which the plant will produce small succulent leaves instead of flat sticky leaves. Pinguicula do not need this period of succulent growth to grow well. If your plant does not grow succulent leaves, there is no need to try to induce the transition. See the section on watering for in depth care during this time.

Fertilizer: Apply Schultz Cactus Fertilizer once or twice a month to the leaves with a mister bottle, during the grow season. Do not apply in winter or during succulent winter mode. We use seven drops of fertilizer in 20 ounces of distilled water.

Soil & Repotting: Pinguicula grow in very dry and rocky soil mixes, do not use a mix that holds a lot of moisture. We use equal parts sand, peat moss, pumice, and perlite. You can order our custom Pinguicula soil mix! These plants ship bare-root so you will have to order potting media and pot them up upon arrival. Pinguicula do not have extensive roots and anchor to the surface of their soil making them ideal candidates for quirky, cute, small, non-draining planters like teacups or vintage pottery. You can plant them in all variety of pots as long as they are glazed ceramic, glazed terracotta, glass or plastic. Avoid un-glazed terracotta. They can be in small pots and do not need much room for roots. Pinguicula are one of the most sensitive plants to a build of minerals and salts in their soil or water. Repot every year to refresh soil.

Exceptional - Better than one twice the price
Size: 15.6" 1080P
I bought a different external monitor a few years ago for twice the price and it was abominable compared to this monitor. This monitor is absolutely perfect. The speakers are definitely tinny like others mentioned, so don't expect to DJ a party with this thing, but for work it's perfect since that means voices are clearer anyways. The sound just isn't as full/rounded with proper bass, but it doesn't even matter because there's also a headphone jack on the monitor, too. USB-C is a total game changer for powering and passing full audio-visual in a single port. The included cables are also a big win since getting a spare data USB-C cable can get pricey and I know the one included is guaranteed to work with this monitor. It was literally plug-and-play with my 2023 16" Macbook Pro. I could go on and on about how every detail of this monitor is perfect, like how the stand is also a screen protector cover and how light and easy it is to carry and how the little grippy feet hold it in place confidently, but my point is THIS is FINALLY the external monitor I've been looking for!!!

Great purchase and recommend!
Size: 15.6" 1080P, Size: 15.6" 1080P
What a great product! First I’ll start by saying it’s very lightweight which is what I needed to fit in my bag. I bought two of them because I need three screens and I couldn’t be happier. Set up, one cord!!! No power cord needed pulls power from the laptop so that’s a huge win in my book! I love the size I love the case is attached. Definitely recommend

Works as advertised, but included USB-C cable was defective.
Size: 15.6" 1080P
This monitor performs great! Picture quality, brightness, all work as expected. When powered by a phone, you may have to limit the brightness below 80% if you don't attach extra power. The good news is, I can attach a power bank for the extra power, and any extra power not needed by the monitor will pass through and charge my phone. I've tested this with my laptop, phone, and tablet, and it works great in all cases. One extra plus that I didn't expect, because it was not listed in the product description and also not mentioned in any reviews that I saw, is that this monitor has VESA compatible holes for a VESA mount hidden behind the magnetic cover on the back. Beautiful. If I ever decide to mount it to an arm I can do it. All the advertised functionality works as expected with ONE exception. The USB-C cable that came with this monitor was faulty. It had a short across a couple of wires which could have caused damage to my phone had my phone not recognized it and alerted me of foreign object or water in the port. That water and foreign object warning basically means something is causing wires to be connected that shouldn't be and assumes you have a good cable. In my case, it was the cable itself that was faulty, and I used a tester to make sure. While the description says "do not use other USB-C to USB-C cables", that is just to cover themselves, because many people will use a USB-C cable meant only for charging, or one that is not display compatible. I have cables of varying lengths that are Thunderbolt USB-C which all handle between 100-240W power, data up to 100Gbps, and displays up to 8K. I just used one of my cables and everything works just fine. If you're having trouble with your monitor, or intermittent connections with the monitor (I did before I got the warning) then you may have a bad cable. Get a quality cable and make sure it's rated for display port, high data throughput (ideally minimum 40Gbps), and decent power capacity. Some will work for data but not power. Some work with power but not data. Some work with power and data, but only one at a time. You have to flip the connector to go between modes. I don't know why they make those, and those that manufacture such garbage should be locked up, but that's another story for another day. Bottom line is this. It's a quality monitor. If it ever starts having issues, I'll update the review. The cables I'm not so sure of. The HDMI cable is sufficient enough for FHD display, but I wouldn't recommend swapping it over to a higher res monitor, as it probably can't handle it. The USB-C cable has quality control issues, as they sourced out inexpensive cables for this monitor to keep the costs down. No big deal for me, as I have an abundance of good cables, but keep that in mind that you may need to consider the cost of quality cables for this monitor. I'm glad I bought it. It's going to make me much more productive. While I was disappointed in the USB-C cable, it's not a deal breaker as I already had plenty. Minus one star for the bad cable.

Versatile, Great size, great value and bright. A little heavy, but well worth the cost.
Size: 15.6" 1080P
I own two of these monitors, I have been very happy with them. I carry them in my backpack/laptop case with all of my needed accessories, and it just simply works. I work from home and I was looking for something that I could take with me when I travel. My typical home setup involves a 43" LG monitor in the center, and then four additional 1080P monitors. When I am on the road, I need something smaller to have more "real estate" to work with. I usually use a hotel 4k TV or 4k tv at the air BNB we stay at so that I don't have to the 43" LG, but sometimes I just use these two portable screens. I have held meetings from a roadside park from the back of my Suburban with these while we were camping, from Panera while mixing audio, from a waiting room at an office while waiting on someone to complete their day, etc. All in all, the two that I have allow me to streamline my workflow when travelling. I have multiple windows up during the workday; I gather information from those screens and consolidate/copy/paste/ reference the data on my main laptop screen in the front and center. These monitors simply allow me to replicate what I have at home, but on a smaller and (somewhat) lighter scale. The good: I am not a gamer, so I cannot comment on how these would work in a gaming setup, I work on documents and reporting. With that said, these have great color at a great size. I can fit my Macbook Pro, and up to four of these screens in my bag, plus all my accessories, including Jabra Engage 75 headset, Plantronics headset (backup) , Apple keyboard and mouse, StreamDeck, USB-C Hub, and when needed, a universal Docking station that uses DisplayLink technology (Dell UD22) to get the extra screens. Without that, the Mac won't support more than 3 or 4 displays (Check specs for your PC/Mac). I like that these are USB-C *AND* HDMI. I can use them on pretty much any modern PC. To use the HDMI, however, You do need to power the monitor over USB-C with the provided cable. That's not a product issue, it's simply because that's the way HDMI works, there is no power over the cable. VESA capable, which is a big plus, I have magnetic VESA arms and I leave the plates on these monitors so I can use them anywhere. The bad: The rotator dial on the side has a tendency to get smashed in, but I don't use audio on either of the screens. I have a Bluetooth noise cancelling over the hear headphone set for that. A more solid design would have been with tactile push buttons instead of the rotator dial. I only have this problem with one of the screens. When I put them the backpack, I now put them in with the rotator dial pointed up to ensure a drop of the bag doesn't chance damaging the equipment. The ugly: The weight of the screens and associated covers adds about 2.5 lbs each, which is a lot. I have ordered two more, so that will be 10 lbs in the laptop backpack. May need to switch to a roller bag to cart this entourage around. Once I get the other two, I will revise this review. Right now I don't know if I will have to use the UD22 to utilize all of these screens simultaneously.

Great product for a great price
Size: 15.6" 1080P
I REALLY like this. I need 2 screens to do my job efficiently and have struggled lately when traveling. Splurged on this for myself and was really impressed. It’s nice and lightweight but feels sturdy. The image quality is good. The set up could not be easier. This is a game changer for me.
