Purple Swedish Ivy – 11" Hanging Basket
Timeless Beauty for Cozy Corners & Porch Chats
Tucked beneath the eaves of a whitewashed porch or swaying gently from a cottage hook, this Purple Swedish Ivy is more than a plant—it’s a sweet whisper from the past. Known for its rich, deep green foliage kissed with royal purple tones underneath, this trailing beauty brings softness and grace to any space.
Though it’s called “Swedish Ivy,” this plant isn’t actually from Sweden, nor is it a true ivy. Native to the warm regions of South Africa, it gained its name as it became beloved in Swedish homes for its fast growth and cascading charm. It’s been adorning windowsills and porches since the 1940s, making it right at home in our 1942 cottage setting.
What It Represents:
Purple Swedish Ivy symbolizes warmth, protection, and enduring friendship—the kind of love that fills Sunday dinners, front porch swings, and shared laughter between neighbors. It’s a plant that feels like home.
Size & Growth Habit:
Trailing up to 2 to 3 feet long, this ivy loves to spill gracefully over the sides of a hanging basket, offering fullness and vibrant life to any room or patio.
Where It Grows Best:
Perfect for bright, indirect light, whether indoors near a sunny window or on a shaded porch that gets morning light. It thrives in temperatures between 60-75°F, making it a wonderful choice for spring and summer porches or cozy indoor nooks year-round.
Care Instructions:
-
Light: Bright, indirect light or gentle morning sun.
-
Water: Let the top inch of soil dry out between waterings. Don’t let it sit in soggy soil—this plant likes its “feet” just damp, not soaked.
-
Humidity: Loves a little moisture in the air—mist occasionally indoors.
-
Maintenance: Pinch back leggy stems to encourage fuller growth and more trailing beauty.
Complimentary Plant Companions:
Pair it with ferns, impatiens, or coleus for a lush, cottage-style planter. Its purple hues also dance beautifully alongside white alyssum or pink petunias for that sweet, old-fashioned garden party charm.
Bring home a little piece of love and legacy with this Purple Swedish Ivy Hanging Basket—a perfect gift for a friend, a welcoming touch for your porch, or a reminder that the best things in life are those we grow with care and share with others.
