Overview Yellow Elephant Bush (Portulacaria afra)

Common Name: Yellow Elephant Bush
Botanical Name: Portulacaria afra
Family: Didiereaceae
Type: Succulent
Mature Size: Up to 4 feet (1.2 meters) tall
Native Area: South Africa
Hardiness Zones: 9a to 11 (USDA)The Yellow Elephant Bush, also known as Portulacaria afra, is a popular succulent known for its vibrant yellow-green foliage and bushy growth habit. This hardy plant is not only visually appealing but also an excellent choice for both indoor and outdoor gardens. It is often used in xeriscaping and as a ground cover due to its drought tolerance.

Characteristics

  • Foliage: The leaves of the Yellow Elephant Bush are small, round, and thick, with a glossy texture. They can vary in color from bright green to yellow-green, especially when exposed to full sunlight.
  • Flowers: In optimal conditions, this succulent produces clusters of small pink or white flowers, which typically bloom in late summer.

Care Instructions

Light Requirements

Yellow Elephant Bush thrives in full sun and requires at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily. While it can tolerate partial shade, optimal growth and vibrant colors are achieved with plenty of light.

Soil and Potting

Use a well-draining soil mix designed for succulents or cacti. A combination of potting soil with perlite or coarse sand is ideal for promoting drainage. Ensure that pots have drainage holes to prevent root rot.

Watering

Follow the “soak and dry” method for watering:

  • Water thoroughly when the top inch of soil feels dry.
  • During the growing season (spring and summer), water every 1 to 2 weeks.
  • Reduce watering frequency in fall and winter as the plant enters dormancy.

Temperature and Humidity

The Yellow Elephant Bush prefers moderate temperatures between 65°F to 80°F (18°C to 27°C). It is not frost-hardy and should be protected from temperatures below 30°F (-1°C). This succulent thrives in low humidity environments.

Fertilization

Fertilize sparingly during the growing season with a diluted balanced fertilizer once a month. Avoid fertilizing during winter when the plant is dormant.

Propagation

Portulacaria afra can be easily propagated through:

  1. Stem Cuttings: Take healthy stem cuttings and allow them to callous for a few days before planting in well-draining soil.
  2. Offsets: The plant produces small offsets that can be gently removed from the main plant and replanted.

Common Issues

  • Pests: Watch for pests such as mealybugs and aphids. Treat infestations promptly with insecticidal soap or neem oil.
  • Diseases: Overwatering is the main concern for this succulent, leading to root rot. Ensure proper watering techniques are followed.

Comfortable, relaxed fit semi-dress suit that fits true to size. Don't round up or down in size.
This suit fits true to size. We got the 9-10 size in white/tan for our above average height 7 year old, and the suit was just a little big (te Amazon algorithm recommended 9-10 based on past purchases and timing. He is the large side of his 2nd grade class, despite being one of the youngest, so I would say this suit would start fitting an average 8.5-9 year old boy. The fabric is a relaxed summer fabric, so good for semi-dress relaxed events. Our tan suit (and from the weathered gray/blue/green images, I assume all of the suits) seems like a casual menswear commercial shoot. The fabric isn't scratchy and our son said it is comfortable. It includes the picket flower, but I didn't think much of that plastic bloom.
