Known locally as malanga or Otoe, Xanthosoma sagittifolium is a lush, tropical edible plant with bold, arrow-shaped leaves that bring a striking presence to the garden. Valued for both its ornamental foliage and nutritious underground corms, this plant grows easily in Bocas’s warm, humid climate. It prefers partial shade, rich soil, and steady moisture—thriving with minimal fuss. The large leaves lend a tropical feel to food forests and permaculture gardens, while the starchy roots are a versatile food source widely used in Caribbean and Latin cuisine. A beautiful and practical addition to any edible landscape.
