Haworthia cymbiformis is a small, rosette-forming succulent. It belongs to the Asphodelaceae family — the same family as aloes — and is one of the most popular Haworthia species for indoor growing.
🌿 Appearance
- Rosette Shape: The plant forms compact rosettes about 5–8 cm (2–3 in) wide.
- Leaves: Thick, fleshy, and shaped like little boat hulls (which is what “cymbiformis” means in Latin — boat-shaped).
- Color: Typically light green to translucent, often with soft lines or “windows” on the tips that allow light to reach inner leaf tissues for photosynthesis — an adaptation to low light.
- Texture: Smooth and glossy, not spiny like some other succulents.
🌸 Flowers
- The plant produces tall, thin flower stalks (inflorescences) up to 30 cm tall.
- Small, white to pale pink tubular flowers appear in spring or summer.
- The blooms are modest but charming — typical of Haworthia species.
🪴 Growing Conditions
|
Aspect |
Ideal Conditions |
|
Light |
Bright indirect sunlight; tolerates some morning sun but can scorch in strong afternoon light. Great for windowsills or filtered greenhouse light. |
|
Water |
Water sparingly — allow soil to dry between waterings. Overwatering causes root rot. Use the “soak and dry” method. |
|
Soil |
Well-draining cactus or succulent mix (can add perlite or pumice). |
|
Temperature |
Prefers 18–26°C (65–80°F); protect from frost. |
|
Humidity |
Low to moderate; thrives in dry air. |
|
Feeding |
Optional — a diluted cactus fertilizer once a month during growing season (spring–summer). |
🌿 Propagation
- Offsets (pups): The easiest method — the plant produces small baby rosettes around its base. Gently separate and replant once they have some roots.
- Leaf cuttings: Possible but slower.
- Seeds: Rarely used by home growers, as it’s slow and unpredictable.
⚠️ Common Problems
- Overwatering: The #1 killer — leads to mushy, translucent leaves.
- Too much sun: Leaves may bleach or develop reddish tones (a stress response).
- Poor drainage: Can cause root rot quickly.
