Herb Growing Tips

Light:  Full Sun

Temperature:  Perennial for zones 3-9

Watering:  Comfrey needs an average amount of water and prefers to stay consistently moist but not waterlogged. Do not allow it to dry out between watering.

Soil: Needs moist soil that drains well so that the roots do not stay wet and begin to rot.

Comments:  Comfrey is a highly useful herb for the organic gardener! The plants grow quickly and produce four to five pounds of cut foliage per plant, which is very rich in mineral content. This foliage decomposes quickly and makes a highly effective, all natural liquid fertilizer. You can also add the leaves themselves to your compost pile to aide in breaking down other organic matter, which will give you a much richer compost mix.

Herb Description

Comfrey is one of our most popular medicinal herbs. Common Comfrey is also referred to as ‘Knitbone’ as it is the plant's high concentration of Allantoin that helps reduce inflammation of sprains and broken bones. When mashed and heated into a poultice or applied as a salve, Comfrey can also make a wonderfully mild astringent great for ulcers and sores. The plant's natural Allantoin levels also make it a great herb for after sun care. Just steep fresh comfrey into a tea for external use, by straining the leaves and letting it cool. You can then soak the sunburned areas in the cooled tea to help reduce pain and discomfort, and promote healthy skin regeneration.

Comfrey enjoys a wet, shady area and will do well in most soil types. Though it makes a beautiful addition to the garden, it can sometimes be bothersome to get rid of, as new shoots grow easily from pieces of severed roots.

More recently, Comfrey has been the subject of a hot new composting trend. Because the plant yields large amounts of leaves, breaks down quickly and contains natural compost activators, you can create a compost tea from comfrey for fertilizing your plants. To learn how to make your own comfrey compost tea and how it benefits your garden, read our blog, Comfrey: Your Compost Companion.

** Please note: Comfrey should not be taken internally as, even in small doses over time, it can be harmful.

Their other flavors without fizz are great...but not this one (My honest opinion).
Now I know why this one was so cheap! The taste was not pleasing to me at all... I threw it away. However, I do love their other lines, with the berry flavor being the best! Orange is good too but to obtain the best flavor, 2 spoons are required (for me anyways). Also, the berry flavor (while only taking 1 spoon) is even better tasting if you add a little lemon juice to it. Finally, I read that adding lemon juice to water helps to prevent kidney stones! Who knew! This is a good product but I think they went to far trying to add "fizz".... the effect was negative while the previous products are great!

Best one yet
Best tasting Metamucil if you enjoy carbonation. Less sweet than regular (even the no added sugar version felt a bit overly sweet to me). Lemonade is a close second but a bit too expensive. Wish it would come with a scoop but I saved one from a different product and dropped it into the jar here.

Great product, dislike new 43oz size
Works well. Prefer the “fizzy” formula over all others. I recommend adding powder to your cup, fill 30-50% with cold water, then use a small handheld milk frother to blend. It’ll “foam” then settle, add you can add more water. (If you fill the whole cup with water right away it’ll overflow when it foams up.) I prefer to drink it quickly, before it starts to thicken into a heavy gel/paste. 3 star rating for 2 reasons: 1) Strongly dislike the food coloring! 2) They recently changed container size and shape. It used to be a 29oz cylinder, now it’s 43oz and more like a tub. The new format is too large for my kitchen vitamin drawer + too wide and heavy to grab with one hand. (I’ve included side by side pics here - didn’t think to take them until I’d already removed the 43oz label for recycling.) I saved my last 29oz canister and I’ve been decanting powder from the 43oz, keeping the 43oz in pantry storage.

Great product
I have been using Metamucil for a long time! I can tell a difference in using the plain and the vitamin variety. I feel a more energetic. I will not use this variety close to bedtime. It does fizz a lot. Only add a small amount of water to the glass and after the fizz settles down add more water. Great product!
