Ficus benjamina, commonly known as the Weeping Fig, is one of the most elegant and classic indoor trees, prized for its graceful form, glossy leaves, and air-purifying qualities. A member of the Moraceae family, this tropical species is native to Southeast Asia and northern Australia, where it grows as a large evergreen tree.

Indoors, it’s admired for its arching branches and dense canopy of small, pointed, dark green leaves that gently cascade, creating a soft, flowing silhouette. The slender trunk can be grown straight or braided, adding a decorative and architectural touch. Mature plants can reach impressive heights indoors, yet they can also be pruned into compact, bushy shapes to suit smaller spaces.

Ficus benjamina has been a popular interior tree for decades thanks to its refined look, natural air-filtering abilities, and its adaptability to bright indoor conditions.

Ficus benjamina – Care Guide

Light

Thrives in bright, indirect light. It can tolerate some gentle morning or late-afternoon sun but should be protected from harsh midday rays. Low light can cause sparse growth and leaf drop.

Watering

Water when the top 3–5 cm of soil feels dry. Keep the soil evenly moist during the growing season (spring and summer) but never waterlogged. Reduce watering slightly in winter. Ficus plants dislike sudden changes in watering routine.

Temperature and Humidity

  • Temperature: Prefers 18–26°C. Avoid cold draughts and sudden temperature changes.

  • Humidity: Average household humidity is fine, though occasional misting helps maintain glossy foliage and prevents leaf tips from drying out.

Soil and Potting

Use a rich, well-draining peat-free compost mixed with perlite or grit for aeration. Repot every 2–3 years in spring or refresh the top layer of soil annually to keep the plant healthy.

Feeding

Feed every 4–6 weeks during spring and summer with a diluted balanced liquid fertiliser. Stop feeding in winter when growth slows.

Pruning and Maintenance

Prune in spring or early summer to maintain desired size and shape. Remove any yellowing or damaged leaves. Clean the foliage regularly with a damp cloth to remove dust and enhance its natural shine. Rotate the pot occasionally to encourage even growth.

Growth and Maturity

A moderate to fast-growing indoor tree, typically reaching 1–2 metres tall indoors. With proper care and pruning, it can be shaped into an elegant upright tree or dense shrub.

Common Issues

  • Leaf drop: Often caused by sudden changes in light, temperature, or watering habits — usually temporary once the plant adjusts.

  • Yellow leaves: Overwatering or poor drainage.

  • Brown edges: Low humidity or inconsistent watering.

  • Pests: Occasionally spider mites, scale, or mealybugs.

Background and Benefits

Ficus benjamina has long been a favourite in homes, offices, and conservatories due to its timeless beauty and refined tropical charm. It’s also one of NASA’s top-rated air-purifying plants, known to remove common indoor toxins like formaldehyde and benzene. With its elegant canopy and easy-going nature, it brings a touch of calm, greenery, and sophistication to any interior space.

Fantastic
Format: Kindle
I honestly have no words. Read this book in the course of five hours, I’m heartbroken, filled with joy, and a little bit angry. The book was fantastic, and I really wish I got to see more of their relationship, and I wish the ex girlfriend got what came for her because she was kind of a bitch.

Great book
Format: Kindle
I'm a little bitchy when it comes to writing, so throughth the book I was very very pleased when i realize the writing was so on point, really on point, its something lacking in most of the new authors. I've been reading a lot of sapphic romance, I like the genre, so I could realize of that. I stop reading a book when something bothers me The plot, I really loved the characters, they were so relatable, I wanted to hug Stella all the way, and Olive and her snarky comments made me giggle more than once. It was an amazing book, handle mental issues, mourning, relationships, very very beautifully, so thank you to the author. There are some tiny things tho, a few storylines not closed, like what happend with Olive's family, they sort things out? they did no? Olive just accepted that?, not very clear. Maybe it is because English is not my first language, but sometimes I found that some things are explained in a way a little ... like tangled? Hector's orientation was not very clear until Olive told Derek i think, or whats the deal with Stellas mom... like i said, tiny things, the story was great, the angsssst, i like it, the slowburn was really good too. I would recomend this all the way

We Feel the Same
Format: Kindle
Olive and Stella are such great, unique characters and so well developed and portrayed in this story. Their fear of commitment is realistic and their differences well defined. I loved every part of this tale and don't see how anybody else wouldn't feel the same.

Favorite book so far!
Format: Paperback, Format: Paperback
I’ve recently dived into sapphic novels and this is book 5 of my collection and i can confidently say this is my favorite i’ve read! I love how easy of a read it is! It got delivered at 3 and i finished it by 6, i was hooked. i would totally recommend this as a first time sapphic book! The characters are easy to understand and it features the “useless lesbians” chiche that i love so much in books. I laughed and cried and gasped while reading it. This book really hit home with the themes and characters, making its way into my heart as an unforgettable read.

okay
Format: Kindle
I have been so excited to get to this one for a while, and I really wanted to (and was so sure that I would) love this one, but in the end I thought it was just okay. This one started out so strong IMO (I'm a nervous flyer so I understood Olivia), I loved the "meet cute", and as a previous runner (who did RunDisney) I loved that part. I was really excited to see where it went once I realized it was going to be fake dating (my favorite trope). I liked each MC, but I really wish that Stella's POV was also included. I liked most of the side characters, and enjoyed how emotional the family aspects of this book were. This is open door, and there were a few really sweet/swoony sweet moments. For me this one felt very long in some points, but slow in others. Another thing that really bugged me was that Stella is described as "Latina". I personally hated that we were pretty far into the book before that was discussed, and I felt like it was weirdly used as a plot for why Stella was trying so hard to get her promotion. I also hated that there was so much family drama with Olive's family and there was no real resolution, and with Stella's dad I was hoping to see where he was in his diagnosis in the epilogue. Over all it wasn't a bad book, but it was disappointing IMO. I know this author has another book coming out soon, and I will eventually read it, and I hope it works better for me.
