Description
The Crinum Lily is a bulbous perennial and spectacularly huge lily. It grows rapidly to over 5' high with 5' long sword to strap shaped leaves. They are exotic, fragrant, and exciting bell shaped flowers, that come with a lovely scent and are related to the Amaryllis plant.
Crinum bulbs are much larger than bulbs of its relative the Amaryllis (amaryllidaceae). Roundish, with a long tapering necks, bulbs of a crinum can be 12-16 inches in length.
Crinum Asiaticum bulbs offer fragrant white blooms ideal for tropical Indian gardens. A summer favourite for fragrance lovers. Flowers Jun–Aug (plains), Jul–Sep (hills). Plant Feb–Apr (plains) or Mar–May (hills).
Crinum asiaticum (Giant Lily) boasts umbels of 20-30 deliciously scented, spidery looking, pristine white flowers, 6-8 in. across (15-20 cm), adorned with slender petals and remarkably long protruding stamens with red filaments. Blooming from summer to fall (sometimes year-round in warm winter areas), the blossoms rise atop leafless scapes, well above the foliage clump of evergreen, semi-erect, strap shaped, fleshy leaves.
Environment
They perform best in full sun (but not burning sun, partial shade from the extreme heat of the sun) so give them all they can get, and a well-draining soil.
Landscape Use
They make wonderful specimens and very attractive ponds and streams plants for landscaping by a pool.
