Originally from the deserts of South Africa, ice plant is a hardy perennial succulent that has naturalized in many regions around the world, including California, Florida, Australia, England and in most of the Mediterranean countries. Ice Plant was introduced to California in the early 1900s to help stabilize the soil along railroads tracks and is now classified as an invasive specie in hot climates.

Ice plant is a fast-growing, tender perennial that will survive winters in Canada in zones 8-9 in British-Columbia. They are usually cultivated as annuals in colder regions. Ice plant mixed colours grows to about six inches tall compact, low to the ground, forming a dense mat of dark-green foliage. The leaves of this succulent are short and covered in hair that look like frozen droplets of water, hence the name. Flowering occurs in late spring or early summer and display masses of flat, daisy-like flowers that come in vibrant shades of white, pink, yellow, orange and purple. Ice plant mixed colours is often grown as a ground cover, in border front, containers, rock gardens and sunny slopes.

GROWING INSTRUCTIONS

Don’t let the name fool you, ice plants are hot climate perennials with warm, vibrant flowers. The common name comes from the fine hairs of the plant that reflect light and resemble ice crystals. The succulent foliage can stay evergreen in warm areas.

Seeds can be started 4-6 weeks before the last frost date. Use flats or starter pots filled with moist soil and leave about 1 cm of space below the top of the container. Add a thin layer of fine gravel to the top of the soil. Sow the seeds and tamp down through the gravel so they make contact with the soil. Don’t cover the seeds, they will need direct light to germinate.

Keep the temperature above 16 degrees and place seeds under grow lights or in a sunny spot in the house. Mist the seeds to keep moist and don’t let them dry out. After the danger of frost has passed, harden off plants over the course of two weeks.

Ice plants will thrive in full sun, flowering abundantly. Dry, well-drained soil is the ideal medium for ice plants. Average sandy or gravel soils work best. Ice plants prefer dry conditions and after getting established should be watered infrequently, about once every two weeks when there is no rainfall. Potted plants may need a bit of fertilizing to promote blooming, whereas ice plants kept outdoors usually don’t require much feeding, unless they’re in particularly poor soil.

Ice plants are versatile and are often used in desert gardens, rock gardens, as ground covers and borders. They do well in containers and can be taken inside before freezing temperatures arrive.

QUICK FACTS

- Ice plant is also sometimes called ‘’Livingstone Daisy’’ or ‘’Ice Daisy.’’

- In warm regions, ice plant will form a mat that can reach a diameter of up to 50 meters.

- Ice Plant seeds will remain viable for 3 years if stored in a cool, dark place, ideally between 4 and 10⁰C. After that, the germination rate may start to go down.

A Must if you have Fiber internet!!!
Size: 10FT
I recently got fiber internet installed and decided to upgrade my Ethernet cable from Cat 7 to this UGREEN Cat 8 cable—mostly just because I wanted to make sure my network setup was fully up to date. I honestly wasn't expecting much of a difference, but I was surprised to see over a 20% increase in speed after swapping out the cable. The cable itself is extremely high quality. The braided exterior feels durable and premium, and the connectors are solid and well-made. Everything about it gives the impression of a quality product designed to last. Whether the speed improvement was due to my previous cable or not, I'm very happy with the results. For anyone upgrading their network, especially with fiber internet, this was a worthwhile upgrade and well worth the money.

UGREEN Cat 8 6FT Braided – Finally a short cable that actually hits 40 Gbps in real life
Size: 6FT
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ UGREEN Cat 8 6FT Braided – Finally a short cable that actually hits 40 Gbps in real life I have a 10 Gbit NAS (Synology DS1823xs+) sitting right behind my gaming PC, and every “Cat8” cable I tried before this one was either stiff boat-anchor thick or straight-up lied about speed. This UGREEN 6 ft braided version is the first one that actually delivers. Real-world tested speeds iperf3 PC ↔ NAS: sustained 39.4 Gbps bidirectional (that’s ~4.9 GB/s) Large 4K/8K file transfers: 4.7–4.8 GB/s steady, no drops Zero packet errors after 48 hours of torture testing Build quality & practicality Flat braided jacket is super flexible, looks premium, and doesn’t turn into a tangled mess like round Cat8 cables Gold-plated contacts, double shielding, and it passes a Fluke DSX-8000 Cat8 Channel test (yes, I’m that guy) Perfect 6 ft length, no excess coil behind the desk causing signal reflections Snagless boot actually works, no more broken clips Why I love it for desktop use Runs cool even at full 40 Gbps load (barely warm) Way less stiff than the usual shielded Cat8 firehoses, easy to route under a desk or through a cable sleeve Latency is stupid low: 0.22 ms average to my NAS vs 0.45 ms on my old Cat6a round cable Only “con” (and it’s tiny): it’s flat, so if you’re one of those people who religiously wants perfectly round cables for aesthetics, you might not like it. Everyone else on planet Earth will think it looks cleaner anyway. For $14, this is the best short-hop 40 Gbps cable on Amazon, bar none. Already replaced every 1–10 ft run in my office with these. If you have 10G+ gear sitting close together and you’re still using Cat6 or stiff Cat8, do yourself a favor and grab a couple. You’ll instantly feel the difference. 10/10 – UGREEN absolutely crushed it with this one.

Still the best ethernet cable out there right now
Size: 6FT
I ordered several of these cables a couple years ago and they are still the best cables I have ever purchased. The Cat8 speed rating is great. These are very well built with the outer covering and the quality connectors and covers over them. Fast data transfer wtih Cat8. I am ordering more tonight to replace some other cables as these just look, feel and work premium.

Great Cable
Size: 10FT
I’m really impressed with this cable. The braided design makes it feel extremely durable compared to standard rubber cables, and it gives me confidence that it’ll hold up well over time without fraying or breaking. The 10-foot length is perfect—long enough to reach where I need without creating extra clutter. Performance-wise, it delivers exactly what it promises. The connection is fast and stable, making it great for gaming, streaming, or anything that needs a reliable high-speed connection. Overall, it’s a high-quality cable that combines durability, performance, and a convenient length. Definitely a great buy.
