Hailing from South Africa, this plant grows from a small bulb, and in some ways has similar care to a cacti or succulent, except it dies back in the summer as a defence mechanism against extreme heat in it's natural habitat. Hold back on watering over late summer when it dies back, and you should get lots of sizzle-y leaves in spring/early summer. The plant should get a large flower spike in late spring, and whilst the foliage will die back when this happens the flower smells of vanilla!
