Lily of the Valley (Convallaria majalis)

Lily of the Valley is a classic shade perennial that forms a lush carpet and fills spring gardens with a strong, sweet fragrance. Also known as May lily, it spreads into dense colonies that make beds look finished and help suppress weeds under trees and along shady edges. In mid to late spring, nodding white bells appear above glossy green leaves, delivering a clean, timeless look. It is easy to grow where soil stays reasonably moist, but it should be planted thoughtfully because it can spread aggressively.

Distinctive Features

This groundcover is prized for its arching stems lined with small, bell-shaped white flowers that are intensely fragrant in spring. Broad, lance-shaped leaves emerge in pairs and create a dense, uniform patch that reads clean and intentional in shade. After flowering, small berries may form and can turn orange-red later in the season, but all parts of the plant are toxic if ingested. The plant spreads by underground rhizomes and can become vigorous in favorable conditions, so it is best used where a spreading groundcover is a benefit.

Growing Conditions

  • Sun: Partial shade to full shade, with dappled light often ideal.
  • Soil: Moist, fertile, organically rich soil with good drainage, and it tolerates clay when moisture is consistent.
  • Water: Medium, keep evenly moist during establishment, then water during extended dry spells for best foliage.
  • USDA Zones: 3 to 8.
  • Mature Size: About 6 to 10 inches tall, spreading by rhizomes to form colonies.
  • Notable Traits: Very fragrant spring flowers, strong groundcover spread, and toxic to people and pets if ingested.

Ideal Uses

  • Focal Point: Create a broad patch near a shaded path so the fragrant spring bloom becomes a close-up focal point.
  • Woodland Groundcover: Plant under deciduous trees where spring light supports bloom and summer shade keeps foliage comfortable.
  • Shady Borders: Use along the front of shade beds to create a clean, low edge that reads as a finished layer.
  • Naturalizing Areas: Plant in contained zones where spreading is welcome and a dense colony is the goal.
  • Fragrance Gardens: Place near entries or patios in shade where the spring scent can be enjoyed.

Low Maintenance Care

  • Containment: Edge or thin patches as needed to keep spread within bounds, especially near mixed plantings.
  • Watering: Water regularly the first season, then water during drought to keep foliage fuller and greener.
  • Mulching: Add a light layer of compost or leaf mold to support moisture and soil fertility.
  • Division: Divide crowded colonies in early spring or fall to rejuvenate growth and control density.
  • Safety: Wear gloves if sensitive and keep plants away from areas where children or pets may ingest berries or leaves.

Why Choose Lily of the Valley?

  • Spring Fragrance: Delivers one of the strongest and most recognizable garden scents in mid to late spring.
  • Shade Coverage: Fills in difficult shade with a dense, weed-suppressing carpet.
  • Clean, Timeless Look: White bell flowers and glossy foliage fit formal and naturalistic gardens alike.
  • Low Fuss Performance: Thrives with consistent moisture and minimal upkeep once established.
  • Deer and Rabbit Resistance: Typically less attractive to browsing animals compared to many shade perennials.

If you want a fragrant spring groundcover that makes shade feel deliberate and complete, Lily of the Valley is a strong choice. Give it moisture, allow room for its spreading habit, and use edging where you need control. In the right place, it becomes a dependable, long-lived carpet that anchors the entire shade garden.

Dogs love it and so do I
Size: Small
I have small dogs (<20 lbs) and they would chew on these forever if I let them. Never had any pieces break off. While this isn't the hardest toy to clean, it isn't the easiest either. Very worth the money and so much easier to use and safer for them. There's no danger of them breaking or swallowing part of the brush which has happened in the past. I highly recommend this dental toy, especially if your dog tries to chew on the toothbrush when you brush their teeth.

Good Idea, didn't Match Expectations.
Size: Large
Heavy and a bit difficult to 'load.' Maybe too hard for our dog. He did carry it around but didn't try to get treats as well as expected and it's quite difficult to clean. Maybe best for a larger more aggressive dog than a 65 lb. lab mix.

We've happily used OxyFresh pet water additive for probably around 15 years. I love that product, so I figured their toys would be great too. Not so much. The concept seems good. This does feel like a heavy duty rubber and it feels like a sturdy construction, but in actuality, it did not hold up. Without a goal like food in it, my two dogs had 0 interest in this. It says you can put a treat in it. I wrestled to put a piece of kibble in the jaws of this toy, but that was tough and there isn't much room in there. That did pique their interest. Both my boys are about 50 lbs. One is a heavy chewer and the other is pretty gentle mouthed with toys. BOTH dogs were taking chunks out of this immediately. I must say that I'm really disappointed. If the rubber held up, this is a fantastic concept and seemed like it would work very well to clean teeth. Unfortunately for us, this was an expensive toy that began to fail within about 15 minutes of what seemed to be very average use. We'll be continuing to use a toothbrush instead.
