Black Knight Butterfly Bushes Have Fragrant Purple Blooms!

This beauty will be a pollinator magnet in your garden.

The Buddleia davidii Black Knight Butterfly Bush is a sight for the eyes planted in any butterfly garden landscape! As long as you have a sunny planting spot this flowering perennial shrub will flourish with big purple flower heads whose fragrance will attract butterflies and other pollinators like bees or hummingbirds to your landscape.

This flowering butterfly bush plant features very dark purple conical flower heads that have a bloom time from early to mid-summer to early fall at their prime. You can start seeing the clusters of flowers as early as May or June and they will last all the way until September. They will appear on a long shrub-like spike that surrounds the circumference of the plant.

Contrasting the deep purple flower spikes on the butterfly weed is olive green foliage that will remain on the plant until winter before dying back. It is famous for its bushy growing habit, honey-scented fragrant flowers, and robust growth. The fast growth rate is perfect for shrub borders, foundation plantings, or specimen plants.

The stunning flowering shrub is rabbit and deer-resistant and tolerant of clay soils once established. It is extremely low maintenance and drought tolerant. Once planted you can set it and forget it besides the occasional watering.

Black Knight Butterfly Bush Care

The purple Butterfly Bush size is up to 6-8 feet tall and 3-5 feet wide at full maturity. It will perform best in full sun and well-draining soil. It can tolerate partial sun to partial shade but foliage may become infrequent.

Grow the Buddleia Black Knight Butterfly Bush across the United States in USDA hardiness zones 5-9. In northern climate zones like 5 and 6 with colder winters, the deciduous shrub can die down to the ground in winter months in the manner of an herbaceous perennial. Do not fret – the cold-hardy root systems will stay intact and flush out in early spring.

Butterfly bush pruning will benefit the plant after the flowering period ends to help shape the shrub to your desired size. The green leaves can take heavy pruning. Do not prune once spring has arrived to avoid cutting off new flower buds. The best time of the year to prune is in winter.

You can even prune your plant into a butterfly bush tree! Deadhead butterfly bush and remove spent flower blossoms to encourage repeat blooms. Plant the butterfly-attracting bush somewhere the fragrance can be enjoyed!

  • Plant in full sun and well-draining soil for the best bloom production; partial shade is tolerated but may reduce foliage density.
  • Expect dieback in colder winters, but the hardy roots will resprout vigorously in spring.
  • Prune in winter after flowering to shape the plant, remove damaged wood, and avoid cutting off new buds; heavy pruning is well-tolerated.
  • Deadhead spent blooms regularly to encourage repeat flowering and maintain a tidy, fragrant display.

Great tough toy!
Color: 2PC-Bacon-Green, Color: 2PC-Bacon-Green
Finally, a dog toy that my bully cannot tear up! They do have a questionable appearance, but we won’t discuss that. Other than that, she does really enjoy chewing on them, carrying them around, playing with them, all things! They are really well-made. I don’t have to worry about little pieces breaking off and the fear of her swallowing any of it. They have held up really well. I also love that this is a two pack so if she does lose one in the yard or leaves one outside, she has a backup one that’s available for her inside. The size is really good for medium to large size dog.

My dogs love these!
Color: 2PC-Bacon-Green, Color: 2PC-Bacon-Green
My dog love to chew on bones. So, I thought why not? I will give these a try. My dogs (olde english bulldog and french bulldog) love these. I love that it came w/ 2 bones so they aren’t fighting over them. They are both different colors. The ends are shaped as apples and the middle is leaves and tree limbs. They are pretty hard. They are supposedly bacon flavored but they have no smell to them. They are supposedly for aggressive chewers. They seem well made but my dogs will put that to test as time goes by. Since it came with 2 bones I feel like the price point was decent. It’s hard to find toys/bones that my dogs like so when I seen them chewing on these it made my heart happy. They are bulldog approved by my 2 crazies.

Finally, a treat that lasts and doesn’t make your house a mess!
Color: 2PC-Bacon-Green, Color: 2PC-Bacon-Green
These are fun, nylon dog toys. They actually have a smell to them that is noticeable if you put your nose right up to it. Our dogs love, beef knuckles, and they make such a mess in our house that we needed an alternative. I am happy to report that these worked! They also have several knobs on them so the dogs can wrestle with them a little bit. The way they are shaped makes it very easy for the dogs to pick up especially when you have short nose dogs like we do. The price for these is much better than what you would pay in any store. I think these are a great bargain and a great way to treat your dog without wrecking your carpets! You can also throw it in the dishwasher if you want to. I definitely recommend!

Very hard
Color: 2PC-Bacon-Green
Extremely hard and heavy. So hard my dog couldn't even bite it. She can only play with it on the rug for fear she might chip or break the floor tiles.

As advertised and didn't splinter with gnawing!
Color: 2PC-Bacon-Green, Color: 2PC-Bacon-Green
This toy is definitely made for major dog toy-destroyers! The dog bones are made of a hard nylon/plastic that is very different from the standard dog toy. The toy is rigid, bumpy, and has knobs on both ends to simulate the bone shape. One of the dog toys, out of the box, had an odd black mark along one of the knobs. It did not wipe away and had a thin piece of plastic attached to it. I did cut that away to be safe, as I don't want to risk my dogs choking, even on something small. That, to me, looked like a factory default. Maybe from when it was being molded? It was only on the one, so its very possible that its just mine. Also worth noting that the toys did NOT smell strange or like plastic as many do. That was honestly pretty refreshing. It does not exaggerate about its durability. The material of the toy makes it so it cannot bend or break. I honestly think it would mess up my car tires before it would mess up the toy if I ran over it in the yard. That being said, my bigger dog did put teeth marks into it immediately. Like, the second he put it in his mouth. That isn't necessarily a bad thing, since you don't want them to chip a tooth, but it is something to make note of. The gnaw marks did not splinter, as some durable chews tend to, which is an excellent sign of a long lasting toy. The second any of our toys splinter, we take them away as they can cause a choking hazard. We have two bulldogs and they both have played with this style of hard toy before. The smaller bully, the old man, was disappointed by my present of the nylon chew. He sat at my feet pretty pathetically until I gave him an ice cube and sent him on his way. He usually enjoys the hard chews, but I think its possible he didn't like the size of this one. Though, it is surprising. Our larger bulldog, the puppy, loved it immediately. He took it from my hand and ran off with it to gnaw on for probably an hour. Then came back to grab his brother's to gnaw on too! For the price, I think its worth it, as you get two of them, and the lack of splintering is game changing.
