Clematis ‘Avalanche’ – A Stunning Climber with Abundant White Blooms

Clematis ‘Avalanche’ is a beautiful deciduous climber known for its profusion of large, pure white flowers. This variety produces an abundance of blooms from late spring to early summer, creating a stunning display of elegance and freshness. The flowers are delicate yet bold, with soft greenish-yellow centers that contrast beautifully against the crisp white petals. Growing to a height of 200–300 cm, ‘Avalanche’ is ideal for trellises, fences, or climbing over arches, making it a wonderful addition to vertical spaces in gardens or patios. Its strong, vigorous growth habit and long blooming season make it a favorite for gardeners seeking to add beauty and structure.

Why Grow Clematis ‘Avalanche’?

Profuse White Blooms – The large, snow-white flowers of Clematis ‘Avalanche’ bloom in abundance, creating a breathtaking display of elegance and simplicity. Their delicate beauty brightens up any garden, especially when they cascade over trellises, fences, or pergolas.

Long Blooming Season – This variety of Clematis flowers from late spring into early summer, offering a long-lasting display of fresh, pure white blooms. The extended flowering period ensures that the garden remains vibrant and full of life during the warmer months.

Upright & Vigorous Growth – Growing to a height of 200–300 cm, Clematis ‘Avalanche’ is perfect for climbing over trellises, fences, or structures. Its vigorous growth habit makes it a fantastic choice for adding vertical interest and structure to gardens, patios, or balcony spaces.

Low Maintenance & Hardy – ‘Avalanche’ is a hardy variety that is relatively easy to grow and maintain. It requires minimal care once established, making it ideal for gardeners who want a high-impact plant with low maintenance. It’s suitable for a range of growing conditions and thrives in both sunny and partially shaded locations.

Attractive to Pollinators – The beautiful blooms of Clematis ‘Avalanche’ attract bees, butterflies, and other pollinators, adding to the wildlife-friendly appeal of your garden.

Planting & Care Guide

Position: Clematis ‘Avalanche’ thrives in full sun to partial shade, with at least 6 hours of sunlight per day to encourage abundant flowering. It prefers sheltered locations to protect it from strong winds, which could damage its delicate blooms.

Soil: Best planted in well-drained, fertile, and slightly acidic to neutral soil. Clematis plants prefer moist soil with good drainage, which helps prevent root rot. Enrich the soil with compost or organic matter to ensure it is nutrient-rich and retains moisture.

Watering: Regular watering is essential, especially during dry periods or when newly planted. Clematis ‘Avalanche’ prefers consistently moist soil but should not be waterlogged. Water deeply to encourage strong root growth, but ensure good drainage to avoid soggy conditions.

Fertilizing: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring to promote healthy growth and abundant blooms. Avoid excessive fertilization, as this can lead to lush foliage growth at the expense of flowers.

Pruning & Maintenance: Clematis ‘Avalanche’ blooms on the previous year's growth, so light pruning after flowering is best. Remove dead or damaged stems, and cut back the plant to shape it or maintain its size. For more vigorous growth, prune in late winter or early spring, before new growth begins, removing any old, tangled stems.

Mulching: Mulch around the base of the plant to retain moisture, suppress weeds, and protect the roots from temperature fluctuations. Keep the mulch away from the crown of the plant to prevent rot.

Protection from Pests and Diseases: Clematis ‘Avalanche’ is relatively pest-resistant, but like all Clematis, it can occasionally suffer from aphids or fungal infections. Regular inspection and appropriate treatments, such as insecticidal soap for aphids or fungicides for fungal issues, can help keep the plant healthy.

Perfect Plant Combinations

Clematis ‘Avalanche’ pairs beautifully with a variety of plants. Its crisp white blooms contrast beautifully with other flowering climbers like roses, jasmine, or honeysuckle. For a stunning display, combine it with vibrant-colored perennials like daylilies, lupines, or lavender, where the white flowers provide a gentle, elegant contrast. For a softer, more romantic look, plant it alongside pastel-colored plants such as peonies, astilbes, or pink or purple clematis varieties. It can also be used to drape over shrubs or small trees, enhancing their form with its cascading blooms. Additionally, combining Clematis ‘Avalanche’ with evergreen shrubs like boxwood or holly will ensure year-round interest and structure in the garden.

Durable and a favorite toy
My 7 month old Black Lab loves this bone. She is a chewer and has gone to town on the three ends. They are roughed up a bit but holding up better than expected. Highly recommend for dogs that love to chew.

Perfect for aggressive chewers
I have a 2 year old pittie and she chows thru bones in minutes, even those reviewed as "long lasting". This thing is still going strong after 9 months. She was not initially interested, had to spread peanut butter on one end, one time, and now it is her go-to chew toy. Looks a little mangled after all this time but she's not even 75% thru it. Highly recommend, no stomach issues.

Best long-lasting dog chew
If you want something to occupy your dog that's harmless, this is the one. He doesn't have to chase it, so it doesn't get lost under the cabinets, and he's been chewing it for hours and barely made a mark on it. When he's chewing on this, he's not whining or asking to sit on my lap, and he can stay nearby as he enjoys this toy.

Not perfect for every dog, but still worth a shot
I bought the bacon-flavored Benebone with high hopes after reading the reviews. Our 45lb mutt loves to chew on bones (and thankfully that's ALL she loves to chew on!) but we've had trouble finding anything that she can't destroy in one sitting. We've heard that antlers are the longest lasting but can be damaging to the dog's teeth, so we wanted to try something with a little less potential for disaster. The Benebone wishbone fared okay. I do have to say that she loved the bone, as did our 14lb schnoodle. The first day she had it, they took turns gnawing on it for hours. Unfortunately, the large one's jaws are quite strong, and so by the end of day 1 there were some pretty significant teething marks on each of the ends, and it was starting to look pretty gnarly. I put it up for a little bit, but they've had other nylon bones that looked worse so I gave it back to them the next day. On day 2, the little one was chewing on it so vigorously (and I think the bone was gnarly enough) that her gums started bleeding. I noticed the blood on the bone so I took it away again. On day 3, I gave the bone back to the large one to chew on. It wasn't too long, though, until I was hearing some pretty loud snaps and I found that the large pup was actually starting to get larger pieces off of the ends of the wishbone. This had me worried, so I threw the wishbone away. Relative to other chew toys that the large one likes (she'll only chew on bones and edibles, for some reason - nothing with any sort of rubbery material), this did actually have a decent life span, but we're still looking for something better. I give the product 3 stars because the dogs clearly loved the bone, and I'm sure that it's perfect for some dogs. For example, if it was just our schnoodle chewing on it, it would have lasted much longer and I would probably be posting a 5-star review here. In the end, though, we did buy the wishbone for the larger dog, and it failed to hold up for her - for the price, I would have wanted something that lasts longer - hence the two star deduction. UPDATE 8/10/2014: Not long after I posted this review, Benebone contacted me in the comments to offer a refund and hinted at the potential for a larger bone sometime in the future. I sent in our order number and they processed the refund quickly. I've added back an extra star, because Benebone's stellar customer service has made the product worth the try. I would definitely do business with Benebone again, and I'm looking forward to trying (or rather, having my pup try) a larger version of the bone if/when it surfaces!
