Discuss Fake News with Elementary Students

Do you believe everything you read in the newspaper?

Early in August 1937, a news flash came: a sea monster had been spotted lurking off the shore of Nantucket Island. Historically, the Massachusetts island had served as port for whaling ships. Eyewitnesses swore this wasn’t a whale, but some new, fearsome creature. As eyewitness account piled up, newspaper stories of the sea monster spread quickly. Across the nation, people shivered in fear.

Then, footprints were found on a Nantucket beach. Photographs were sent to prominent biologists for their opinion. Discussion swirled about raising a hunting party.

On August 18, news spread across the island: the sea monster had been captured. Islanders ran to the beach and couldn’t believe their eyes.

This nonfiction picture story book is a perfect tool to discuss non-political fake news stories. Back matter discusses the freedom of the press guaranteed by the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. Quotes from Thomas Jefferson make it clear that fake news has always been one of the costs of a free press. A Timeline lists actual events in the order they occurred. A vocabulary list defines relevant words.

Not for us!
Size: Large, Color: Antler
I'm sure for a dog that doesn't chew, would be great. Ours went through it in days, leaving sharp shards and making his gums bleed.

Great for tough chewers!
Color: carrot orange
This is awesome for my 85# Labrador. He is very destructive with toys and this has held up great. After months of playing with it, only teeth marks on it. Worth every penny. The green top crinkles which my dog loves.

My dog was obsessed with these
Color: carrot orange
Bought these for my dog and they were an instant hit. The carrot shape is cute, but more importantly they kept my dog entertained for quite a while. The squeaker still works and the toy has held up better than I expected considering how rough my dog can be with toys. I always expect squeaky toys to be destroyed within a day or two, but these have lasted surprisingly well. They're lightweight, easy for my dog to carry around, and have become one of the toys that gets picked out of the basket the most. If your dog enjoys squeaky toys, these are definitely worth a try.

Good one.
Color: carrot orange
Our Lab loved it. Nice and sturdy apart from the leaves, which were short lived. Overall a good toy for a big boy.

Fun for retrieving and chewing.
Color: carrot orange
My lab loves this carrot, and uses it to retrieve and is not easily destroyed. However, he was able to pull off the leaves the first day. It’s still functional, just know they’re gonna come off if you have a chewer. Purchased based of recommendations for indestructible toys.
