Anthurium magnificum × crystallinum

Anthurium magnificum × crystallinum develops broad, heart-shaped velvet leaves with deep green colour and clear pale venation. The blades have a soft matte surface, a strong central vein and a fuller outline as the plant matures.

As the leaves broaden, the plant needs a steady pot and enough room for the petioles to spread from the central base. Thick Anthurium roots sit best in an airy mix, while new leaves expand most cleanly with warmth, humidity and bright filtered light.

Broad velvet leaf features

  • Broad heart-shaped leaves: Mature blades can develop a wide, rounded outline with a clear basal notch.
  • Velvet surface: The leaves have a soft matte texture rather than a glossy finish.
  • Pale vein structure: Light veins trace the central rib and side veins, giving the blade clear contrast.
  • Medium to large pot presence: As the leaves size up, the plant needs a steady pot and room around the crown.
  • Thick roots: The root zone needs an open substrate that drains well while holding light, even moisture.
  • Warm-growing habit: The plant responds best to stable indoor warmth and filtered light.

Leaf spread and growth behaviour

The leaves open soft and lighter in colour, then deepen as they harden. As the plant matures, the blades can become broader and the vein pattern more defined, especially when the root zone stays evenly moist and airy. The plant grows from a central base, so the crown should sit above the mix with the petioles free to spread.

The parent species are both velvet Anthurium from wet tropical regions. Anthurium magnificum is native to Colombia, while Anthurium crystallinum is native from Panama to Colombia. Indoors, the plant needs warmth, humidity, filtered light and an open root zone.

Growing Anthurium magnificum × crystallinum indoors

  • Substrate: Use a chunky Anthurium mix with bark, perlite, pumice or similar airy material around the roots.
  • Water: Water when the top layer has started to dry, keeping the root zone lightly moist rather than saturated.
  • Light: Place it in bright filtered light. Strong direct sun can scorch the velvet surface and leave pale marks.
  • Humidity: Moderate to high humidity helps new leaves unfurl with fewer creases and dry edges.
  • Temperature: Keep the plant warm, with no cold drafts and no cold wet pot after watering.
  • Potting: Choose a pot with drainage and enough weight to balance the larger leaves as they develop.
  • Feeding: Feed lightly during active growth. A weak, regular fertiliser routine is safer than strong occasional doses.

Leaf and root issues on Anthurium magnificum × crystallinum

  • Brown leaf margins: Dry air, irregular watering or root stress can brown the edges of the broad velvet leaves.
  • Pale scorch marks: Direct sun can damage the soft surface, especially on newly hardened leaves.
  • Yellowing leaves: Dense substrate or waterlogged roots can cause lower leaves to yellow and soften.
  • Slow new growth: Cold roots, low light or a depleted mix can slow leaf production.
  • Pests: Check for thrips, spider mites, scale and mealybugs around the newest leaves, petioles and undersides.

Safety for Anthurium magnificum × crystallinum

This Anthurium contains calcium oxalate crystals that can irritate the mouth, skin and eyes after contact with damaged plant tissue or sap. Keep it away from pets and children that chew plants.

Parent names and botanical background

This cultivated hybrid is named for its parent species, Anthurium magnificum and Anthurium crystallinum. The genus name Anthurium refers to the tail-like spadix, from Greek roots for “flower” and “tail”. The epithet magnificum comes from Latin for magnificent, while crystallinum is Latin for crystalline.

Anthurium magnificum Linden was published in 1865, and Anthurium crystallinum Linden & André was published in 1873. The cross itself is a cultivated hybrid between the two accepted species.

Loved them so much- Bought another pair
To start off, I have wide feet, ankles, and calves, because i'm a bit on the heavier side. Finding shoes that fit these requirements are difficult. The top part of the shoes that hug my legs are actually still a little roomy. Someone who has slightly larger lower legs can fit into these as well. If you have tiny legs, these shoes may be a little too loose, or if you don't have wide feet. These shoes are literally perfect for my feet and legs. The back unzips so I was able to get my feet into the shoes easily, and even wearing them I didn't feel like my toes were being squished. I ordered a size 10, and it is perfect length and width for my wide feet. Do note: My feet are wide enough to not fit in most shoes, but not too wide, you should pay attention to the measurements if you have wide feet. I was a little skeptical from a review of a woman who had her toes bleeding from these shoes, as I know that is often a problem for me with most shoes I wear. Generally I start bleeding in the back of my heel. So I was skeptical that these shoes would make me bleed. However, I was proven wrong. These are one of the only shoes i've worn that haven't rubbed my skin right off. I believe that has to do with the lovely height of the back, which prevents rubbing on the back of your heels, and the perfect width of the shoes. If your feet are too wide for these shoes, then you will probably bleed, but that's to be expected because the shoe does not fit you and that is often something that can happen with shoes that don't fit. I originally bought the green pair, because I loved the color, but then I loved the fit so much that I bought a second, black pair. These are one of the only shoes with heels I actually wear because they are more comfortable than most, and they're just adorable. I am not generally a high heel wearer, so I'm not used to walking with my heels elevated. Despite that, these shoes were fairly easy to walk in. They are my favorite pairs of heels. and I do highly recommend them. I will be buying more colors in the future, and I hope they will come out with more colors like brown and an aqua/blue shade.

Trying to get what's in picture
Size: 9, Color: Natural Nbpu
Amazon said my size was a 10. So i ordered a 10. Waaaay too long, wide big in general, and I have a wide foot so I was pleasantly surprised. Company did not offer any color in size 9.5 but according to their size guide I "might" fit into a 9! Again, pleasantly surprised that i totally did and even when I put in my "Dr. Scholl's" inserts, i have slight wiggle room for when feet swell. Overall I am happy with the shoe fit, comfortability and height...not that I'd wear these for more than 8 hrs., but comfy enough for a wedding or to wear to work when I have a "mostly office day" instead of out in the yard. HOWEVER... i loved the color and suede-ey look/feel pattern of the size 10. It was exactly as picture/info described. But I'm not sure what happened to the size 9? wth? Although i ORDERED exact same shoe/color but in smaller size...what I got was a much lighter color, and NOT the suede fabric...more nubuck. Bu inside of shoe had same info/tag as the 10. Really hoping that it was a packing/labeling error. Will try one more time to order the 9, in the same 'name' fabric. Fingers crossed that I get what I ordered/want. Otherwise it'll be a return and less stars.
