The Yellow Dragon Fruit Plant (Selenicereus megalanthus or Hylocereus megalanthus) is a standout variety known for its vibrant yellow skin, sweet flavor, and creamy texture. This highly sought-after dragon fruit is not only a visual delight but also boasts a honey-like sweetness that sets it apart from other varieties. What makes the Yellow Dragon special is that it’s self-fertile, meaning it doesn’t require another plant for pollination, making it easier to grow and ensuring reliable fruit production. The plant thrives in warm, sunny climates, is drought-tolerant once established, and produces stunning white flowers that bloom at night. Perfect for growing in containers or in the garden, this unique variety will bring a tropical flair and delicious fruit to your home! Mature plants can get up to 20FT in length and about 10FT wide. Dragon fruit grows very well in containers.
Ideal Growing Conditions
USDA Hardiness Zones: 9B-11
Protect young plants if temperatures drop below 50F. Once established, they have a cold hardiness down to 20-25F.
Sun: Full sun is best for maximum growth and production. Can tolerate some partial shade but production will be decreased.
Soil: Grows best in well draining soil that is heavy in composted organic matter
Water: Monitor young plants and keep consistent water. Once established it is drought tolerant.
Fertilizer: Fertilize every month with a citrus fertilizer or 10-10-10.
