This species is characterized by its angular, fleshy stems that spread out horizontally and bear a resemblance to some types of cacti, although it lacks spines. The stems are typically green to gray-green and may have purple or reddish hues when stressed or exposed to full sun. Orbea schweinfurthii is well-known for its unusual star-shaped flowers, which are typically yellow or brown and can emit a strong scent that attracts pollinators such as flies. The odour is often described as resembling rotting meat, which is a common trait among many carrion flowers in the Orbea genus.
