Native to Ecuador in northwestern South America, Begonia lichenora is a micro, rare cloud forest species in the Begoniaceae family that has become increasingly sought after among terrarium and vivarium enthusiasts for its unique foliage texture, compact growth habit, and excellent adaptation to humid tropical environments. Found growing in cool, moisture-rich montane forests, this species naturally inhabits the shaded understory where frequent mist, abundant organic matter, and stable humidity create ideal growing conditions.

What immediately distinguishes Begonia lichenora from many other terrarium begonias is its remarkable foliage. The leaves often possess an unusually textured surface with subtle ridges, veining, and coloration that give the plant a distinctly natural, almost moss-covered appearance. Depending on growing conditions, foliage may display varying shades of deep green, olive, bronze, and reddish undertones, with new growth often emerging particularly colorful before hardening off.

Like many Ecuadorian cloud forest begonias, B. lichenora thrives in environments where humidity remains consistently elevated but airflow is never stagnant. These conditions make it exceptionally well suited to vivariums, terrariums, greenhouse cabinets, and other enclosed tropical systems. When provided with stable moisture and filtered light, the species develops into a handsome understory specimen that adds texture and depth without overwhelming neighboring plants.

Unlike larger landscape begonias, Begonia lichenora generally remains compact and manageable. It gradually forms attractive clumps that integrate naturally among mosses, liverworts, miniature orchids, Peperomia, Marcgravia, Selaginella, and other cloud forest species. Its moderate growth rate allows it to serve as a long-term feature plant while maintaining proper scale within naturalistic enclosures.

In habitat, this species grows beneath dense forest canopy where direct sunlight rarely reaches the forest floor. Bright indirect or filtered light typically produces the best results in cultivation. Excessively intense lighting can stress the foliage, while overly dim conditions may reduce vigor and leaf coloration.

A moisture-retentive but airy substrate is ideal. Mixes containing sphagnum moss, tree fern fiber, fine orchid bark, leaf litter, and other organic components closely mimic the decomposing forest-floor conditions where the species naturally occurs. The root zone should remain evenly moist without becoming waterlogged.

Humidity between 70–100% generally encourages the healthiest growth, largest leaves, and best coloration. As with many cloud forest begonias, gentle airflow remains important despite the plant's appreciation for humidity. This combination helps maintain healthy foliage and supports long-term cultivation success.

Within vivarium design, Begonia lichenora excels as a foreground or midground specimen where its foliage texture can be appreciated up close. It is particularly effective when planted near moss-covered hardscape, cork bark, stream margins, or shaded planting pockets where the rainforest aesthetic can be fully realized.

For collectors interested in unusual South American begonias that combine manageable growth, cloud forest character, and outstanding terrarium performance, Begonia lichenora remains one of the more distinctive species currently available in cultivation.

Too Hard
Color: Blue T-Bone, Size: 1 Count
I have a pit puppy, 20 lbs, who loves to chew. She's huge for her age, and I wanted to get her a new toy. I bought two different toys, hoping she would like one. The other toy was a hit, they both jumped at it and were excited about it, probably because it had rawhide rings that went with it. This one was immediately thrown to the side, even though my pit loves to chew on non edible toys. I think this one was just too hard, because both her, and my Chihuahua-Jack Russell, weren't interested. It didn't have any smell to attract them, which is why I bought it, because they love peanut butter stuff. I'm not going to go as far as to lick it and taste it... I'm pretty sure it won't taste like peanut butter, either. I feel so bad for my little pittie, she's just sitting here with a sad look on her face because my other dog stole the fun chew toy. I've immediately ordered another of one of those so they both have one, but I've just money wasted on this one. It's probably better they don't like it, I'd be worried about them breaking their teeth. I know it's supposed to be for power chewers, but it has no give whatsoever, just extremely hard, shiny plastic. It's useless, unless you're planning on filing it into a point and making a prison shank. Maybe you can leave it in front of the fridge for your SO to step on in the middle of the night when he goes to steal your almond milk. I'll figure out some way to use it. I did dip it into my boyfriend's peanut butter jar to let my puppy lick it, but I can do that with a spoon. I wanted her to feel like she got something, maybe my other dog will let her have a turn with the fun toy after awhile. That's the only reason I gave it 3 stars. You can dip it in peanut butter and I was being generous.

Can become brittle with sharp edges with use.
Color: Blue T-Bone, Size: 1 Count
Our little dog loved chewing this, however after chewing the toy became jagged and brittle with sharp edges that cut into her upper lip which took about 2 weeks to heal. Unfortunately the return window had closed.

Busy bone
Color: Blue T-Bone, Size: 1 Count, Color: Blue T-Bone, Size: 1 Count
My dog loves these!! Great busy bone! And they can hold it with her paws really well. It does kill your foot if you step on it barefoot in the middle of the night. This is a picture of the bone after 7months.

My Dog Loves this!
Color: Blue T-Bone, Size: 1 Count, Color: Blue T-Bone, Size: 1 Count
My dog loves her Nubbies! My Dog chews her Nubbie every morning after she has her breakfast. She sometimes wants my husband or I to hold it for her while she chews on it. I think it is really good for her teeth and gums. These last a few months for our dog who chews it every morning. After a few months the edges get a little rough from all the chewing so I throw it out and replace with a new one. These are very reasonably priced, so I always have a fresh one ready to go. She gets very excited when we get a new one out of the package..

Very durable!
Color: Blue T-Bone, Size: 1 Count
Great product! Dogs love it and very durable. I had been buying the nylon bones in pack of 3, but my 2 dogs would chew them up in no time, and I was buying the aggressive chewer bones. Bought 2 of these, dogs loved it, so I bought another one. Have had these for about 2- 2 1/2 months and still holding up just fine. And the price is great! Would definitely recommend!
