Blooms are exotic looking--difficult to describe, like an unclosed snapdragon, in shades of purple, pink, and white with flecks of opposing colors around the center. Tolerates partial shade, but not much heat, and blooms for 6-8 weeks. Easy to grow, it is commonly called poor man's orchid or butterfly flower.

Schizanthus wisetonensis

AnnualGermination:  21-30 days

Germination Temperature: Optimum soil temperatures 60-70ºF

Seed Planting Depth:  Sow on the surface and lightly cover the seed. 

Starting Indoors:  Start indoors 6-8 weeks before the last frost. Provide 60-70ºF soil temperatures. Transplant after the last frost, 8-12" apart. 

Sowing Outdoors:  1-2 weeks before the last frost, sow lightly- thin to 8-12” apart.

Growth Habit: 

Height and Width: 10-12” x 10-12”

Spacing: 8-12” apart

Light Needs: Full to part sun 

Soil Needs: Average to medium, moist but well-drained 

Approximate days to flower from seed:  60-80 days

Uses:  flower beds, containers, cut flowers

Care: Does not like intense heat, plant in light shade in hot areas to prolong blooming. Water regularly to keep the soil moist. Pinch back for bushier plants. Amend soil with compost before planting.

A familiar story, just with…..less.

So, as other reviewers make clear, this is very similar to Pack Darling and The Beta. It’s much closer aligned with The Beta, in plot and maybe more like Pack Darling with characters. That being said, I don’t hate this…..but it wasn’t great either. It’s both books mentioned but just….less. Less angst, less emotion, less feeling. The plot feels very half fleshed out, and the “bad guy” feels underwhelming. I didn’t really feel any real emotions from and of the male leads, except maybe Oliver. The others fell sorta flat for me. And Mika makes herself out to be this big bad ass straight outta training and then we never see it from here again with the one fitting room incident as the exception. SPOILER: The whole, “Oh, I’m actually probably an Omega, but I don’t wanna be but I do actually wanna be but no one can ever know my secret that I do nothing to hide “ thing fell so flat. She never commutes to believing she was secretly an omega, but also mentions her “secret” a lot. It just felt so manufactured. I’m intrigued enough to read part 2 and see how the author closes everything out, but this is not one I’ll recommend or ever come back to.
