Planting Instructions:

Soil Preparation:

Choose a clear, sunny location that is not in the shade of other trees and receives at least 6 hours of sunlight each day. Trees establish roots better in sandy, well-drained soils rather than heavy, poorly drained soil. Remove weeds, large rocks, and litter from the planting area. Leave small weeds and dead grass, they will enrich the soil when turned under. Spade or till the soil 6-8 inches deep. Loosening the soil will help the plant establish strong roots. If the soil is heavy or clay-like, mix in some sand or compost to improve drainage. Optionally, either form rows of soil beds or hills 4-6 inches high and at least 10 feet apart. This formation of ridges will help with drainage, ensure good airflow, and make harvesting or maintenance easier.

Planting:

European Fan Palm Seeds requires warm stratification to soften the hard seed coat. Soak seeds 24 hours in hot tap water, and repeat this on seeds that did not swell in size as a result of adequately absorbing the water, before warm-stratifying. To stratify, roll seeds in a damp paper towel and place in a resealable bag. Place the bag in a warm, 70F-90F area for at least 120 days, mimicking tropical climates. After the stratification period, seeds should be ready to germinate. To germinate seeds, plant the seeds in small pots with moist potting soil and in a warm, sunny location that is at least 70F in spring. Keep the soil moist, allowing the top inch of soil to dry in between waterings.

Once the seedlings have developed a few sets of leaves and are at least 6 inches in height, harden off seedlings then transplant outdoors in the spring, in a sunny location when temperatures are consistently above 65F. To transplant seedlings, prepare a transplant hole outdoors in a sunny, permanent location. Remove the plants carefully from the pots or flats and set them in the transplant holes, burying some of the stem in the ground. Pack the soil loosely around the plant and leave a slightly sunken area around each plant to hold water. Water the plants after transplanting.

Planting Depth: 1 inch
Within-Row Spacing: 6-10 feet
Between-Row Spacing: 10 feet

Care During the Season:

European Fan Palm can be a robust, attractive specimen for Mediterranean-style gardens or as a statement plant in landscaping with care. European Fan Palm is drought-tolerant once established, but benefits from regular watering during the growing season, especially in hot, dry weather. Water deeply, allowing the soil to dry out slightly between waterings to avoid waterlogging. In summer, continue to ensure it receives sufficient water during long dry spells. If the palm is in nutrient-poor soil, you can apply a slow-release fertilizer in early spring to encourage healthy growth. Pruning is minimal but may be necessary to remove any dead, damaged, or yellowing fronds, particularly if the palm is growing in a more confined space like a container. During autumn, reduce watering slightly as the palm's growth slows down, but continue to monitor moisture levels, especially in dry climates. European Fan Palm is hardy and can tolerate a range of temperatures, including mild frost, though young palms may require protection in colder areas.

This book is very comforting and inspiring!
Format: Paperback
Just love all of Easwaran's books. I have memorized many of these passages for meditation and enjoy reading the others. It tells of the source and author of the passages. There is a great variety to refer to for many different needs. I appreciate the translations by a great meditation teacher, Eknath Easwaran, who brings these words to people of all different back rounds and beliefs. Thank you.

Everyday Spiritual Inspiration
Format: Kindle
Not only is this book providing me with sacred wisdom for my daily meditation practice, I find I turn to it like a trusted friend to help me find wisdom when I am at a loss by looking in the section "Using Inspirational Passages to Change Negative Thinking.". The careful way that the source authors and scriptures are referenced is a great asset. This is a book that I will probably wear out and have to buy again before all is said and done.

a book that needed to be written!
Format: Kindle
Force of Nature is a wonderful book that needed to be written. A true -life adventure story that conveys the physical and emotional journey of a woman in her 50s who goes on a hike few dare try. The writing is incredibly sensory—full of everything she sees, feels, tastes and smells out in the wild. It’s a story of frustration and achievement, of triumphing over internal anxiousness and very real dangers and climbs. Beautiful writing, full of hope, great for book clubs and as a gift for nature-lovers. Hit the trail with Force of Nature!
