Philodendron scherberichii – Narrow Leaves and Rare Highland Beauty

Why Philodendron scherberichii deserves your attention

Philodendron scherberichii brings elegance in its most understated form – long, narrow, pendant leaves with subtle reddish tones when young and a quiet tropical charm that unfolds slowly with age. The blades stretch over half a metre long, softly glossy on top and slightly brighter underneath. Its natural growth habit is semi-upright to arching, with petioles that start erect but let the leaves hang gracefully outward. One of the most distinctive features? Its deep reddish-violet inflorescence, which fully exposes the long spadix without a constriction – a trait not commonly found in other Philodendron species. With persistent reddish cataphylls, gently quilted vein patterns, and a form that feels wild yet refined, this species is a rare gem for serious collectors.

Leaf structure and other key features of Philodendron scherberichii

  • Pendant leaf blades up to 60 cm long and 27 cm wide, narrowly ovate-elliptic
  • Subtle reddish tones on new growth and reddish violet spathe during bloom
  • Persistent cataphylls up to 38 cm long with glossy, rigid texture at maturity
  • Midrib and primary veins softly quilted on upper surface, arched toward margins
  • Single inflorescence per node with dark maroon inner spathe and protruding spadix

Natural habitat and mature form of Philodendron scherberichii

This species occurs in montane tropical wet forest, in transition zones toward montane rainforest, following the Holdridge life zone system. It's been documented in Central and northern South America, often growing as a hemiepiphyte at mid-elevations. In its natural range, the environment stays moist, with cloud forest humidity, diffuse light, and consistent temperatures above 16°C. Indoors, Philodendron scherberichii remains relatively compact, reaching up to 1.5 metres in height. The internodes are short to moderately spaced (1.2 – 15 cm), with strong upright growth in early stages that shifts into pendant leaf display as the plant matures. Toxicity: As with most aroids, it contains calcium oxalate and is considered toxic to pets and humans if ingested.

Philodendron scherberichii care guide

  • Placement: Prefers a bright area with filtered light or partial shade
  • Light: Thrives in bright indirect light; direct sun may scorch delicate leaves
  • Watering: Keep substrate lightly moist but never soggy; allow surface to dry slightly between watering
  • Humidity: Enjoys high humidity (60 – 90%); avoid dry air and cold spots
  • Temperature: Ideal range is 18 – 26°C; do not expose to temps below 16°C
  • Substrate: Use a loose aroid mix with bark, perlite, and coco coir
  • Repotting: Every 1 – 2 years or when roots fill the pot
  • Fertilizing: Feed every 2 – 3 weeks with a balanced liquid fertiliser
  • Propagation: Best propagated from stem cuttings with a visible node
  • Hydroponics: Can adapt to semi-hydroponic systems when transitioned gradually
  • Pruning: Trim older leaves to encourage new upright growth and shape control

Typical problems and care solutions

  • Drooping or curling leaves: Usually caused by underwatering or low humidity – check substrate and environment
  • Spider mites or thrips: May appear in dry spaces – wipe leaves and treat with neem or insecticidal soap
  • Yellow leaves: Often due to overwatering or root compaction – repot if drainage is poor
  • Leaf tips browning: Usually linked to mineral buildup or humidity stress – flush soil and improve air moisture

Extra notes on growth and display

Philodendron scherberichii doesn’t need a moss pole, but it will appreciate some gentle support as it grows taller. You’ll notice the geniculum (the joint between leaf and petiole) develop a slight curve over time, enhancing its natural arching form. Reddish tones in the cataphylls and emerging leaves are normal and part of its charm. Observing how this plant thrives in misty, cool rainforest edges will help you fine-tune your setup: keep it humid, well-lit (but shaded), and stable. It doesn’t want extremes – it wants consistency.

Etymology and formal description

The name Philodendron combines the Greek words “philo” (love) and “dendron” (tree), reflecting the genus's typical climbing nature. The species name scherberichii honours its collector or contributor associated with its original documentation. It was formally described in 2007 by botanists Thomas B. Croat and M.M. Mora, published in Willdenowia.

Doesn't last
Size: 2.5" x 5.1", Size: 2.5" x 5.1"
This grinder appeared to work great and is one of the few ceramic options available. Unfortunately, the ceramic grinder has already broken inside, detaching from the bottle altogether. There are probably tiny plastic pieces in my leftover peppercorns. Don't buy it unless you want to purchase it every few months, which is unfortunate.

Very nice, work well, good gift at a reasonable price
Size: 2 Count (Pack of 1)
I've owned a few different brands and types of grinders before, and these are quite similar. The last set I purchased had the exact same grinder heads, just on smaller glass bottoms. The grinders on those became, unfortunately, unusable due to clogging that resulted in breakage of the ceramic gear. I worry that, since these new grinders have the same heads on them, that these won't last longer than the last set. However, I read reviews of the "best" grinders out there, and these came just behind a more (much more) expensive set with metal gears instead of ceramic. They'd last longer, you might think, however, it was also mentioned that salt corrodes metal and so that's why the vast majority of grinders, mostly intended for use with salt, are made of ceramic. So why would I spend five times the price on the expensive ones? So far, I'm very pleased with this set. They're much more comfortable to use than my previous set, which had way smaller glass bases. I can really get a good grip on these. The little "dial" on the bottom, to adjust the coarseness of the grind, moves very smoothly on these. It was so difficult to turn the dials on the previous set - and mind you, these are exactly the same as the new ones - that I had to use a pair of pliers to turn them. Strange. I see this identical grinding mechanism on several of the grinders available on Amazon, so it makes sense to assume they're all sourced from the same manufacturer by different vendors. These also hold about twice the amount as my previous set - not a major hassle to refill, but nice not to have to bother with it as often. Quite elegant looking, too. The set comes with a nifty metal holder with prongs on either side that the grinders snap into place securely for transport from kitchen to dining table. They're inexpensive enough that you can easily afford to buy two sets for each end of your table. That's a nice touch if you're having several dinner guests or a large family, so you don't have to pass the salt and pepper around. I guess the $100 set with the metal gears might last longer, even with inevitable salt corrosion, but these will likely last a good long while with their ceramic gears and, if they do break down sooner, at least you could buy four or five of these sets for the same price. I recommend this set.

Love, Love, Love
Size: 2 Count (Pack of 1), Size: 2 Count (Pack of 1)
THIS SET, I LOVE! Absolutely love. When you buy something that you can't see and physically touch- You're always rolling the dice And whether or not you'll like what you receive.. I have bought a few grinder sets in the past, use for a bit and then toss, and back to buy another. This set is a keeper! It washed well, was easy to fill with a wider mouth opening and the grider worked perfectly. I also like having the ability of changing the coarseness, as our household members have different preferences. Looks nice on my table, and the stand was an added bonus. The size is large enough to not have to refill as often but not to big to look out of place. A good price, they look nice, nice grip and durability. I will be buying a couple more sets as gifts to those that have been here for dinner and mentioned that like them as well. I have no 'cons' to list on the product. I love everything about it. Look no further- you'll be pleasantly pleased.

Great value for the money the set works very nicely
Size: 2 Count (Pack of 1)
This is a nice set of Peppermill and salt grinder. The capacity is very nice and it is easy to clean. It’s made of sturdy glass and the top is a very nice stainless. It’s the perfect size for my hands and it distributes a very nicely, ground pepper and salt. I had to switch the salt and pepper from one shaker to another because one was not grinding the peppercorns, but when I switched it to the other, they both worked fine.

Easy to use, pepper doesn't get stuck
Size: 2 Count (Pack of 1)
I'm never going back to an electric grinder again!!! I like my pepper on the fine side - I don't like to bite into a chunk of peppercorn. With those electric grinders, the peppercorns get stuck and the motors don't have enough 'oompf' to plow through. This handy dandy grinder absolutely does! I'm able to easily adjust the size of the grind and the mechanism is smooth and easy to handle. The shape feels good in my hand and the 1/2 cup container is a great size. You don't have to refill it too often. Between the shape of the grinders and the holder, I feel it looks nice on my table. I couldn't be more pleased!!
