Anthurium 'Queen of Hearts'

Anthurium 'Queen of Hearts' is a cultivated foliage Anthurium with dark, velvety, heart-shaped leaves and warm-toned new growth. Fresh leaves often emerge in red, bronze or burgundy shades, then harden into deeper green.

The plant grows from a compact crown, holding each leaf on a firm petiole so different colour stages can be visible at once. The colour shift is part of the plant’s normal growth cycle.

Anthurium 'Queen of Hearts' key traits

  • Growth habit: Compact cultivated Anthurium with upright petiole-held leaves.
  • New growth: Young leaves open in red to bronze tones before darkening.
  • Leaf shape: Broad heart-shaped blades with a full, rounded outline.
  • Texture: Dense velvet surface that gains depth as each leaf hardens.

Anthurium 'Queen of Hearts' indoor care

  • Light: Provide bright filtered light and protect soft or pale foliage from harsh midday sun.
  • Watering: Water when the upper part of the substrate has started to dry, then drain thoroughly.
  • Substrate: Use a loose Anthurium mix with bark, coco chips, pumice or perlite so roots receive moisture and oxygen.
  • Temperature: Keep warm, ideally around 18–28 °C, and protect from cold wet substrate.
  • Humidity: Moderate to high humidity helps new leaves expand cleanly; pair humidity with gentle airflow.
  • Feeding: Feed lightly during active growth with a diluted complete fertiliser.
  • Repotting: Repot when roots fill the pot or the mix begins to collapse.
  • Pot size: Keep the root ball slightly snug so the mix dries evenly between waterings.

Anthurium 'Queen of Hearts' issues to check

  • Yellowing lower leaves: Check for compacted substrate, cool roots or a pot staying wet for too long.
  • Brown edges: Review humidity, watering gaps and fertiliser strength.
  • Distorted new growth: Inspect young leaves for thrips or mites and stabilise humidity.
  • Soft stems or crown: Check root health and improve drainage immediately.

Anthurium 'Queen of Hearts' handling and safety

Anthurium 'Queen of Hearts' should be kept away from pets and children that may chew plant material. Like other Anthuriums, it contains calcium oxalate crystals that can irritate the mouth, throat, skin and eyes.

Anthurium 'Queen of Hearts' name background

Anthurium belongs to the family Araceae. The genus name comes from Greek anthos, meaning flower, and oura, meaning tail, referring to the spadix.

God reweaves the coat of many colors
Format: Paperback
Excellent booklet of 51 pages. Small size and I’m including this as holiday gifts 2025 as presents this year. Satan weaves a mess and God reweaves it for something good.

If you want to be super productive then start here
Format: Paperback
I have been coding and implementing productivity processes for thirty years and I still found "The Art of Clean Code" engaging and valuable. I've done almost everything in the book, yet like many who have been in the field for a while, the refresher was timely. My work now is vastly different from my work in the '90's, and even what I was doing in the '80's. While the book uses Python examples the code is easy to read and applicable anywhere. Most of the guidelines given even benefit daily life, not just coding. Highly recommended!

Unimpressive
Format: Paperback
This book is very much part of hustle culture. Each chapter contains a shallow dip into a programming principle followed by a metaphorical application of the principle to your career. "10x your income by maximizing your productivity and earning while you learn through a Python side hustle! Here is one anecdotal example of someone who got rich after two months! Sign up for my course and you can do it too!" I don't doubt Dr. Mayer's own expertise, but this is not really a book about coding; it's a book about hustling, and its main purpose seems to be to sell Dr. Mayer's course. What disappoints me is that this book seems to be offered in bad faith. Dr. Mayer may be a true believer, but he probably knows that the vast majority of side hustlers won't make much money, and he probably knows the the tech bro culture around programming is a separate thing from software design per se. I'm equally disappointed in No Starch. I have loved their books up till now; they let us down with this one.
