Why Pollinators Need Our Help:

The Pollinator Crisis:

  • Bee populations have declined by 30-50% in recent decades
  • Monarch butterflies have decreased by 90% since the 1990s
  • Habitat loss is the #1 threat to pollinator survival
  • Pesticide use and climate change compound the problem
  • One-third of our food supply depends on pollinators

Your Garden Makes a Difference:

  • Provides vital nectar and pollen when wild spaces disappear
  • Creates safe nesting and overwintering habitat
  • Supports entire ecosystems (pollinators feed birds and other wildlife)
  • Helps reverse dangerous population declines
  • Connects fragmented habitats through "pollinator corridors"

Growing Your Wildflower Meadow:

Best Planting Methods:

  • Direct sow outdoors in early spring after last frost or in fall
  • Prepare soil by removing weeds and loosening top 2-3 inches
  • Mix tiny seeds with sand for easier, more even distribution
  • Broadcast seeds over prepared area
  • Lightly rake to ensure seed-to-soil contact
  • Keep moist until germination (usually 7-21 days)
  • Thin if overcrowded once seedlings are 2-3 inches tall

Growing Tips:

  • Most varieties prefer full sun (6+ hours daily)
  • Well-drained soil, tolerates poor to average fertility
  • Water regularly until established (4-6 weeks)
  • Drought-tolerant once established
  • No fertilizer needed (encourages lush leaves over flowers)
  • USDA hardiness zones 1-12 (varies by individual species)

First Year Expectations:

  • Annuals will bloom first season (6-8 weeks from sowing)
  • Perennials focus on root development, may not bloom until year 2
  • Don't be discouraged! Perennials are building strength for spectacular future shows
  • Keep area watered and weed-free first season
  • Height varies by variety (typically 12-36 inches)

Maintenance for Years of Beauty:

  • Cut back once annually in late winter/early spring
  • Leave seed heads for birds through winter
  • Allow some plants to self-seed for continuous blooms
  • Deadhead annuals to extend blooming period
  • No fertilizing needed
  • Water only during severe drought

Coverage:

  • One packet typically covers 25-100 square feet (varies by seed count)
  • For larger areas, calculate: 1 oz per 150-200 square feet
  • Better to overseed than underseed for full, lush meadow
  • Mix well with sand or sawdust for even distribution

Perfect Planting Locations:

  • Sunny slopes and hillsides (helps prevent erosion)
  • Edges of property or along fences
  • Around mailboxes or lamp posts
  • Replacing unused lawn areas
  • Between vegetable garden rows
  • School gardens and public spaces
  • Alongside driveways and walkways

Wildlife Benefits Beyond Pollinators:

  • Seed heads feed songbirds through winter
  • Dense growth provides shelter for beneficial insects
  • Attracts ladybugs and lacewings (natural pest control)
  • Creates habitat for ground-nesting bees
  • Supports complete food web

Low-Maintenance Beauty:

  • Once established, requires minimal care
  • No mowing, fertilizing, or intensive watering
  • Tolerates poor soil conditions
  • Adapts to various climates and conditions
  • More resilient to drought and heat than traditional lawns
  • Saves time, money, and resources

Cutting Garden Bonus:

  • Many varieties make excellent cut flowers
  • Bring armfuls of blooms indoors all summer
  • Long-lasting in vases (especially black-eyed Susans and coneflowers)
  • Creates instant country cottage charm

Educational Value:

  • Perfect for teaching kids about plant life cycles
  • Observe pollinators visiting flowers
  • Learn about native plants and ecosystems
  • Understand food webs and biodiversity
  • Hands-on environmental stewardship

Practicality First
Color: Brown/Black, Color: Brown/Black
This is a simple, no frills watch from a well regarded brand. It has good water resistance, good durability, and high accuracy. If all you need is a way to tell the time that won’t fail you, buy this watch. As it’s solar powered, it doesn’t need to be wound or have a battery replaced or charged in the foreseeable future. This longevity and low effort maintenance was the most important feature for me, and part of why I chose this over a digital watch (along with digital watches potentially being bricked from firmware). I shouldn’t have to say this but obviously it doesn’t come out of the box charged and working - you need to leave it by a window or something for a day. After that, it will always work so long as you wear it outside every so often. The battery life is claimed to be 2 months but I’m not about to leave it in a closet for 2 months to test this. This is a newer model than the version I’d been trying to buy and it appears to have a more readable face as well as luminescent watch hands which are helpful for telling the time in the dark. It’s also nearly silent so ticking won’t be an issue. My only complaint is the watchband. It’s a serviceable quick release band, but it’s a bit on the short side and I wanted something of higher quality so I replaced it with a Hirsch 120mm/100mm watchband that actually fits and is altogether nicer than the out of the box band.

The simplest watch there is
Color: Khaki/Black, Color: Khaki/Black
I have a 7-inch wrist and I would like to think that it's the average size (judging from the pictures I have seen from other reviews.) The watch came in from Amazon with zero charge so I charged it for about an hour using a solar watch charger and that brought it back to life. I found that you could charge a solar watch from empty to full in about 5 hours. What I like about this watch is that it fits and feels right on my wrist, is not ostentatious, not flashy, and doesn't crave for attention. You could read the time very well outdoors and even indoors. Even in the dark, the lume is laid-back, but you could still tell the time from the triangular hour markers and the hour and minute hands of the watch. I also like that it has a screw-down case back. I like to tinker with my gadgets and a screw-down case back allows me easy access to the battery when it's time to be replaced. It's also solar-powered, has a 4-month power reserve, an easy-to-operate crown, and has sapphire crystal to boot! Fun fact: I found out recently that they made these watches in Timex's watch factory in Cebu, Philippines. By purchasing it from Amazon, it actually did a return trip back here in the Philippines! Update after a month's use: I changed the strap with a black NATO one and it looks even better with the matte finish of the case. The charge appears to remain strong. I'll probably notice the weird erratic second hand movement (the watch does this when the charge is about to drain) after 4 months. Until then, it's not time for a recharge.

Great specs but not much else.
Color: Khaki/Black, Color: Khaki/Black
The 36mm form factor wears small. Even on my 6-7/8" wrist. It could be that I've gotten used to the more modern 40-42mm case diameters on my other watches. Or that the 12mm thickness compared to its slender diameter gives it an odd proportion that makes the watch appear a bit smaller than it already is. But either way, it does feel small on the wrist. So if you havent tried this one on in person, be prepared for that. If you have very small wrists or prefer the aesthetic of smaller watches, then this size will be great for you. The value of this watch is difficult to pin down. In one sense, well the specs speak for themselves. And Timex has a proven history of reliabilty. But I ranked "value for money" at 3 stars, because at the end of the day you're paying $170 for a Timex. Something about that feels... weird. Timex doesnt have quite the heritage or prestige of say Citizen or Seiko - or heck even Casio for that matter. Its just a very difficult price to justify for a Timex field watch despite the great specs. I hoped in person the dial and hands would be at least slightly more impressive than they appear in the stock photos. But, no they are just as flat and blasé as in the stock photos. If you're looking for a no-nonsense solar field watch with all the specs this watch has and in this smaller 36mm case diameter, there are very few options out there. Especially under $200 (which is why I purchased it). So in that regard, I suppose its worth it. But at this price point I would like to feel a little more proud of whats on my wrist, in terms of aesthetics and design. And I dont really get that with this watch. I even think the regular quartz version of the the Timex Expedition at around $40-50 has more wrist appeal than this watch. I do like the style of the syringe shaped hands, generally speaking. But keep in mind that a Hamilton this is not. There isnt really the level of detail put into the design to dazzle the eye. Kind of a shame really because with these specs, this watch had a lot of potential to be a classic. Havent decided if Im going to keep it or send it back.

Best watch I've ever owned in my 60yrs
Color: Brown
I purchased this 36mm Expedition North Solar Field watch about one month ago, for roughly $150, and I couldn't be more impressed. When I took it out of the box the first week of January, it had no charge...because it was in a dark box in freezing temperatures. No problem, I shined light from a regular 500 lumen rechargeable flashlight on the watch face and the second hand started to move, erratically at first, but within a minute it was moving normally. I set up the flashlight 3 inches from the watch face and left it on for 3 hours, and it has been keeping perfect time ever since. I do physical labor and this watch looks just as good as it did when I got it a month ago. The low profile keeps you from banging the watch on everything you walk past, or reach for, and the black watch face contrasting with the white numbers and near white dials, makes it very easy to tell the time at night. Also, in the past I had owned quite a few expensive watches, however, my last watch was a Timex Indiglo that I put a Shell Cordovan band on, and the real leather band that comes with this watch is more comfortable than the shell cordovan. I only own 1 watch and wear my watch continuously, only taking it off when I shower, so I feel after a month I have a pretty good read on what this watch is. It is a very tough, reliable, and comfortable watch that I will be wearing for many years to come. In my opinion, the best value for a field watch on the market.
