Philodendron Hybrid Pigskin (Rogusum) X Jose Buono: A Unique Fusion for Plant Collectors

The Philodendron Hybrid Pigskin (Rogusum) X Jose Buono is a special hybrid that combines the best characteristics of two stunning plants: the unique, textured leaves of the Rogusum and the vibrant foliage of the Jose Buono. This hybrid is a rare find for collectors, offering an eye-catching combination of textures and colors. It’s a bit more demanding than some Philodendrons, but with proper care, it can become a treasured part of any plant collection.

Why Collectors Adore the Hybrid Pigskin X Jose Buono:

  • Unique Leaf Texture: The pigskin texture, combined with the striking colors of the Jose Buono, creates a plant unlike any other in your collection.
  • Rare Hybrid: As a hybrid, this plant boasts a unique appearance that sets it apart from traditional Philodendron varieties, making it highly sought-after by plant enthusiasts.

Lead — Texture meets painterly color
Two icons, one statement vine. This hybrid pairs the thick, leathery, bullate surface associated with Philodendron rugosum ‘Pigskin’ and the creamy, brush-stroke variegation beloved in Jose Buono. The result is a leaf that looks sculpted and hand-painted at the same time—dense texture that catches side light plus soft panels and speckles of cream to mint over mid- to deep green. Juvenile foliage begins simpler; with steady light and support, blades broaden, texture becomes more pronounced, and the color story settles into a confident rhythm.

The DNA — What to expect as it matures

  • Leaf & finish: Substantial lamina with a subtly pebbled/bullate feel; satin to low gloss for a premium, low-glare look.
  • Pattern: Natural variation from fine speckling to wide creamy sectors; some leaves stay mostly green for vigor.
  • Habit: A true climber that rewards guidance on a slim moss pole, coco totem, or a flat board; tighter internodes and larger leaves arrive as the stem hugs its support.
  • Scale: Compact footprint that builds vertical presence—ideal for shelves, console corners, or window flanks.

Expert Notes — Why collectors love this cross
Texture is the quiet luxury in foliage plants. The “pigskin” side contributes thickness and a tactile micro-topography that photographs beautifully under side lighting, while the Jose Buono influence adds soft, high-contrast moments without overwhelming the leaf. Keep overall light bright and diffused so pale panels stay crisp and the textured surface glows rather than glares. If a run of leaves skews very white, pull the apex slightly off the brightest point to encourage a touch more chlorophyll on subsequent leaves for long-term vigor.

Style Guide — Compose a scene that sings

  • Planter language: Matte stoneware in sand, ecru, oatmeal, or charcoal frames the texture and the cream-on-green palette.
  • Backdrop & materials: Limewash, pale timber, microcement, or honed stone let the bullate surface cast soft shadows; avoid high-gloss backdrops that compete.
  • Companions: Pair with a velvety Anthurium (plush vs. pebbled) or a silver-washed Scindapsus for a cool foil. Keep accessories minimal so the leaf surface and brushy variegation lead.

Care Recap — A calm, repeatable rhythm

  • Light: Bright, diffused daylight all day; filter harsh noon sun to protect pale tissue. If spacing stretches or color mutes, increase even luminance (still filtered) rather than fertilizer.
  • Water: When the top 2–3 cm (≈1 in) dries, water thoroughly and allow full drainage. Consistency—not constant wet—keeps edges clean on cream panels and supports smooth unfurls.
  • Substrate: Oxygen-forward aroid blend—chunky orchid bark + coco fiber/coir + pumice/perlite, with a light sphagnum buffer and a touch of horticultural charcoal. Air first; even moisture second.
  • Climate: 18–29 °C (65–85 °F) and ~50–70% RH with gentle airflow (no AC/heater blasts).
  • Feeding: Light nutrition ¼–½ strength in active months for color clarity and confident sizing.
  • Training & grooming: Secure every node to the support; rotate a quarter-turn every two weeks; dust one or two leaves weekly; remove spent sheaths for a polished center.

Signals & Fixes — Quick diagnostics

  • Long gaps / smaller leaves: Raise overall brightness and keep the stem snug to its support.
  • Brown on white areas: Usually late watering or unfiltered sun—tighten cadence and add sheers.
  • Muted pattern: Improve even luminance before increasing feed.
  • Mix stays wet too long: Boost bark/pumice fraction or step down one pot size to restore aeration.
  • Leaning column: Add a discreet stake while aerial roots anchor into the pole.

Pamela reimagined
Format: Kindle
Having just read (and enjoyed) Samuel Richardson’s Pamela, Shamela cleverly and wickedly reimagines that novel, while compressing the original’s 500 pages into 30 or so. Shamela the main character is a conniving and loose woman, a master manipulator who spends down her husband’s fortune while cuckolding him. She is as different from Richardson’s heroine Pamela as the town of Pottersville is from Bedford Falls ( the latter is Jimmy Stewart’s idyllic home in the movie It’s a wonderful Life, and the former is the dystopian place it would have been without Stewart.) Shamela reminded me of Frank Capra’s movie, where characters notable for their decency and kindness are transformed into their opposites, in this case for satirical purposes. Shamela can only be enjoyed after reading Richardson first and even in the right order it is something of a guilty pleasure.

Good for insights into mid-eighteenth century society in England. Some scenes improbable, some hilarious. Overall very good.

Necessary and humorous companion to Pamela
Format: Kindle
After reading Richardson’s novel Pamela, this satire gives at least some perspective to the story as the “other side of the coin” and perhaps tempers the almost unbelievable virtue displayed in Pamela. However, reading these in 2018 with perspective of 250 years of history available to us, they are a good reminder that it’s still a dog eat dog world, as seen through the #metoo movement of 2017. Men in power abusing sex, other men in power blaming women as gold-diggers. Maybe now this ages old tale gets a new ending?

Old and good
Format: Paperback
Not sure how I should apply adjectives to a book that made history. The style belongs to a bygone era; Shamela is fun because it is a satire, and not intended to be great literature.
