Lycoris radiata var. radiata is a form commonly imported from Japan that was named in 2013 by California lycoris breeder Phil Adams. Lycoris 'Modern Japanese' flowers for us with terminal heads of 7-8 brilliant, orange-red, lacy flowers atop 2' nekkid scapes, starting in early September, and is the last of the Lycoris radiata cultivars to flower. Lycoris radiata var. radiata 'Modern Japanese' is also one of the first surprise lilies to produce its fall foliage, which emerges in late September.
