All the Details You Need to Know
The Story Behind This Plant
Jasmine Sambac (Jasminum sambac) is native to tropical Asia, with roots stretching across India, the Philippines, and Southeast Asia, where it has been cultivated and revered for over 2,000 years. It holds the honour of being the national flower of both the Philippines — where it is known as Sampaguita — and Indonesia, where it is called Melati Putih. In India, it is woven into bridal garlands and temple offerings. The famous jasmine tea of China and Taiwan is scented using Sambac blossoms dried and mixed with green or white tea leaves. Today, it remains one of the most important raw materials in classic French perfumery, including some of the world's most iconic fragrances.
How to Keep Your Jasmine Sambac Happy
Jasmine Sambac thrives with warmth, light, and consistent moisture. Here is everything you need to know to keep it blooming beautifully:
- Light: Jasmine Sambac needs at least 4 to 6 hours of bright, indirect light daily. A south- or west-facing window is ideal indoors. More light means more blooms.
- Water: Keep the soil evenly moist but never waterlogged. Water when the top inch of soil feels dry to the touch. Avoid letting it dry out completely, as this can cause bud drop.
- Humidity: Jasmine Sambac loves humidity. In dry Canadian winters, use a pebble tray with water or a small humidifier to keep the air around it moist, especially when heating systems are running.
- Soil: Use a well-draining, slightly acidic potting mix. A blend of regular potting soil with added perlite works well to ensure good drainage without drying too fast.
- Temperature: Keep it between 18°C and 30°C. Jasmine Sambac is sensitive to cold — keep it well away from drafty windows and exterior doors during Canadian winters.
- Fertilizing: Feed monthly with a balanced liquid fertilizer during the growing season (spring through summer) to encourage consistent blooming. Switch to a low-nitrogen formula once buds begin to set.

Common Questions & Expert Tips
Helping you find the best care answers quickly.
Why is my Jasmine Sambac dropping its buds before they open?
Bud drop is the most common frustration with Jasmine Sambac and is almost always caused by one of three things: inconsistent watering (letting the plant dry out too much), sudden temperature changes, or low humidity. Keep the soil evenly moist, move the plant away from cold drafts, and consider running a humidifier nearby during the dry winter months.
How often does Jasmine Sambac bloom?
In ideal conditions — bright light, warmth, and consistent care — Jasmine Sambac can bloom repeatedly throughout spring, summer, and into early fall. Each flush of flowers lasts just a few days, but the plant will continue to produce new buds in waves throughout the season. Deadheading spent flowers encourages the next round of blooms.
Is Jasmine Sambac safe for pets?
True jasmine (Jasminum sambac) is generally considered non-toxic to cats and dogs, which makes it one of the more pet-friendly fragrant plants you can grow indoors. That said, it is always a good practice to discourage pets from chewing on any houseplant, as individual sensitivities can vary.
"Can I grow Jasmine Sambac outdoors in Canada?"
Jasmine Sambac is a tropical plant and is not frost hardy, so it cannot survive Canadian winters outdoors. However, it thrives beautifully on a sunny patio or balcony during the warmer months from late May through September. Simply bring it inside before temperatures drop below 10°C and place it in your brightest window for the winter.
