Its spicy flavor is used to season food in many different types of cuisine and it is used medicinally to treat colds, aid in respiratory health, digestive health, and to reduce inflammation.  The plant has leafy, grassy foliage that reach 2-3 feet tall and bloom with pretty flowers in the fall.  Once the tropical looking plant dies back in the late fall, harvest the underground rhizomes for the spicy ginger root we all know and love.  Thin the roots rather than harvesting all of them to ensure the plant grows back in the spring.  Plant in partial to full shade and in well amended, draining soil.
